I was very pleased with the work I had done, the work was excellent , response time was great and the professionalism was top notch. I can’t say enough about this company. I will and would hire them again. If you have a project I highly recommend them. I had a shower base installed, extended the valve so I could put tile in my shower and raised the shower head. Excellent company. Go with pro plumbing honest 5 stars.

Barry's work exceeded all my expectations. The jobs he did for me were done skillfully and with great care. Barry fixed broken tile in my shower, fixed the shower door so that it finally opens and closes, cleaned difficult lime deposits and mold and regrouted the sink. He fixed holes in plasterboard left by a plumber, repainted a bathroom, fixed a shattered eave and got sticking doors to swing. I would definitely recommend Barry without hesitation to my friends, and I intend to give Barry other projects. Bruce

BJ spent the day doing quite a few small jobs for me, including installing a shower door and a cat door, caulking, and various other needs. When I responded to his thumbtack offer, he stopped by the same day and gave me a very fair quote. On the day he did the work, he called to confirm and arrived on time. He is extremely personable, knowledgeable and professional, and his rates are very reasonable. I would hire BJ again without question.

The process: Earlier this year, I posted our bathroom renovation project (with no real plan in mind on what we wanted) and within 10 minutes, Purev had reached out and was working with us to find out what we were looking to get done. We spoke to a couple contractors over that week and determined PGC was unbeatable in their prices (contracted labor only, materials were paid for separately). Since we didn't already have the design figured out, we had to be on point with picking out the materials as they needed them. Communication and timing for this piece was tricky as my husband and I were both still working full-time and traveling, which caused a few big delays in the project, but the PGC team was patient and worked with our busy schedules and helped outline what we needed to pick out each week. Overall: The project took a couple months to complete (which is longer than we were hoping for, but most of the big delays were caused by us), but overall the end result is spectacular and we love every little detail. The PGC team did a great job on our bathroom, and we feel that it has really added a lot of value to our house! After the project was complete, there were a couple instances where we had minor cosmetic issues come up (chipping grout, etc) but they came back to fix them soon after we contacted them. All around, we are really happy with the results. Thank you Guree, Eric, Purev and team for the great work! (Side note: The glass contractor we worked with per PGC's referral was also a pleasure to work with. The starfire glass BJ installed for our frameless shower is stunning and we are very happy with it.)

Max was a professional young man who knows his job well. He came in and evaluated the project not only to his benefit but ours as well. Listened to what we had in mind and mentioned a few ideas of his own. We had a poor poor poor tile job done in our bathroom (shower and flooring) and kitchen (flooring) a couple years ago and it brought problems not only like the appeal of it but also mold and cracks, now that we are COMPLETELY satisfied with that we will move on to having other areas of our house redone and will be hiring Max and his team!

Todd did a couple of little projects such as installing new fixtures in the bathroom shower, under the bathroom sink fixtures, and water line into the refrigerator. This allowed me to evaluate his work for future bigger projects. Todd was timely, professional, and did a great job. I was very happy with his work.

I recently purchased a home and had numerous remodeling projects. Osbaldo repainted the interior of my house, installed crown molding, installed new bedroom doors, remodeled the bathroom, converted my dryer hookup to gas, remodeled my closets and installed granite and back-splash in the kitchen. Osbaldo is a good, trustworthy person. He is a hard worker and takes the time to make sure the job is done right. He really has a good eye for what looks nice in a home and had great remodeling suggestions. Plus, his prices are very fair. I will definitely be using him again for any more work I need on the house!

I gave KGA a challenge full bathroom remodel in a week in a 100 year old house! We did the painting and some Sheetrock. But he reconfigured the bathroom and major plumbing relocation new shower and tile floor. They finished by deadline (shower door was custom so that got installed a little later). He was clean and thorough. He gave great advice and listened to what I was looking for. I can't wait for our kitchen remodel!

George did an excellent job on my bathroom floor. He removed the existing tiles and retiled the floor. I am very happy with the result. George is clearly very experienced with tile work, and his work was impressive. This was a 3 day job, and George cleaned up at the end of each day. He arrived on time each day, worked efficiently, paid attention to details, and even fixed my shower door at no extra charge. Do not hesitate to hire George.

Everything was done in a professional, yet friendly manner. The inevitable problems which arose were handled by Mark and he made sure everything was done right and to my satisfaction. He far exceeded my expectations. I would recommend Environmental Builders to anyone planning a construction project, no matter how large or small.

Dan has been doing work for us for the past 15 years now. We met him when he was the foreman on the complete tear down and rebuild of our home in Orinda. He was involved in every aspect of that job from laying the foundation to framing, all plumbing and electrical, windows/doors, cabinet and appliance installation, moulding & trims including tile work in the kitchen and all bathrooms. He was the one person on the crew that was with us every day, problem solving and handling every situation that came up with professionalism and excellent expertise in all areas. Since moving back into our home following the remodel, Dan has continued to help us with all maintenance and repairs at our home and always responds with urgency to our needs. He has often come on a weekend or after hours from another job site to take care of us. Because of our confidence in Dan, we purchased a fixer upper second home which he has helped us to completely remodel in the past year. With Dan's expertise, we were able to do this without the need for an architect and he guided us through every step of the process--working with the town to procure the necessary permits and guiding me with a timeline and "to do" lists to keep our project moving. He is knowledgeable, thorough and efficient in all of his work and knows when to get you involved in the decision-making process. I have referred Dan to many, many friends who have used his services for everything from minor repairs to very large projects. Every single one of them has thanked me over and over--and in turn referred other friends to him as well. I have seen his business grow over these years and I am so appreciative that he always manages to "squeeze" us in when we need something in either of our homes. He is a rare find in this industry and everyone that I have referred to him feels the same way. I am happy for Dan that he is so busy these days--and that my friends and I have to negotiate with each other to get on his schedule for projects(!) It's been a great thing to see him build his own crew as a general contractor and work to teach others to become "Dans" also. We certainly need more of them!

We have had several projects in the last eighteen months: Rebuilt front porch because of dry-rot; replaced double front entry doors and painted them; installed two custom built handrails; installed new back door, weatherproofed all windows; refurbished a bathroom - new sink and vanity top, new shower doors, new toilet, new light fixture, new floor and final painting. All projects completed in a timely manner and to our satisfaction. An easy going guy, friendly and honest and always ready to give constructive suggestions.

First of all I'd like to say Josh is very concerned about his customers' satisfaction. If you are not satisfied, then neither is he. The work wasn't just a bathroom remodel but also a deck - removing old one and replacing it with a new redwood one, house painting, new gutters, and a few other jobs that we didn't get completed because life happened and we ran out of money. When taking off the old gutters there was some rot on the roof and he was able to make those repairs, adding years to our roof. The deck is 1000% times better than the old deck he replaced. We even reduced the size of the deck to save a little money and replaced the remainder of the deck footprint with a cement slab with potential expansion of the house in the future or a spot for a hot tub in the near term. The painting and new gutters were finished just in time for the rain and makes the house look brand new, the shiniest on the block. The real stars of the work, however, are the bathrooms. They were in serious need of work. With his touch, they turned out better than we could have envisioned. We picked out everything and they installed it all, tile in shower, tile on floor, vanities, mirrors, wall cabinets, paint to match the tile, brand new lighting and a new clear shower door to show off the beautiful work. We can't wait to save money so we can have him come back out to do the kitchen.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

    • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
    • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
    • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
    • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
    • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

    • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
    • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
      • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
    • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
    • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
    • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
