The two gentleman who were sent to help me on the day of my very chaotic move, were early and ready to work on the spot. I gave the exact direction and it was followed to the letter. Fast, efficient, respectful, and very hardworking! I will recommend this moving service to any who are moving or even need help with heavy stuff. Absolutely, this company surpassed my expectation of what I would get from a moving company. No hidden fees or charges, just the straight fee I was quoted; how often does that happen! If you were in doubt, know you are in safe hands with this company!

Frank helped us move from Sacramento to Las Vegas. He arrived on time! He was very careful with our things, treating our furniture as if they were his own. This is the first time we had to get moving service and I have to say that it was a great experience overall. Frank and his team are very professional. My wife and I gave him big hugs right after the job's done because we were glad that it was a hassle free move. Thanks Frank!!!

Ruben is the utmost professional in moving. I was so impressed with how he used technique and a patient adherehence to protocols to ensure safety. If there is a science to moving and a course taught in it, I think he could be the instructor! In any case, I would recommend his service for any of your moving-related needs -- as I will be using his service again the next time I have any kind of moving-related needs.

I found Nick online and hired him based on his great online reviews. I got even better service than I expected. I booked at nearly the last minute, and Nick was still able to send two fantastic guys (Ryan and Ryan from Sacramento). Many things went against us... my moving truck was late (but Nick's guys were not), we ended up doing the move late on a Friday night, in the dark, cold, pouring rain. Ryan & Ryan had such great attitudes the whole time, kept busy helping me with other things while we waited for the truck; they hustled to get things unloaded when the truck finally arrived; they were so reliable and pleasant. Outstanding. Oh, and my house has white carpeting. Not a stain or mud mark on it. How did they accomplish that??

M&M Movers is an excellent company. I would definitely use them again, and definitely recommend them to anyone who is moving. I moved from East Bay to the Phoenix area. I had 6 different moving companies provide cost estimates and explain to me how they will handle my household goods. I have many pieces of furniture I purchase from all over the world and to me they are priceless. JR is the only one who convinced me that he would treat my furniture with the care I believe it deserves - and he followed through. And another plus, is that the price he quoted was the price I paid. All other companies gave me estimates that could not be guaranteed. JR delivered my household goods within 3 days of pickup - he could have delivered sooner but my house was not ready for a quicker delivery. All other companies told me that it would be 7-10 days before they would deliver - this was not acceptable. The only "complaint" I have is that at delivery, they didn't fully set up my adjustable bed; they didn't connect the power cord to the underside of the platform. I called JR and he said that one of his folks would return to complete the setup. The guy never showed up. The platform for the bed is too heavy for me to move, but a neighbor helped. That's the only thing that I could say didn't go well. There was no damage to anything. This is the best move I've ever had and I've moved a lot! I surely recommend M&M Movers.

I work for a large property management company in SF and we have very high customer service and maintenance technician expectations and Mike exceeded my expectations. He was very professional, excellent communication skills, answered all my questions, completed more tasks than I thought we could fit into 3 hours. He even ran to the hardware store when the cheap caulking gun wouldn’t work had bought his own to use. He brought all his own tools and ladder. I would highly recommend Mike and have will let my neighbors and local friends about him.

These guys were great. They were honest with estimate and even did last second change with no complaints! (They helped move my brother's furniture at same time since his moving company was horrible and left it). Very experienced and professional. The movers obviously knew their job and were friendly on top of that. It was 15 hour move. They never took a break or slowed down the whole time. I'm so lucky I picked the right company!

After cleaning my garage I found myself with a large amount of junk that I didn’t want to wait for a bulk pickup from Waste Management so I sought out help on Thumbtack. That’s where I found Chris who was able to come and remove everything and take it to the dump for me the same day (actually was at my home in less than an hour). Chris was punctual, fast, professional and reasonably priced. He actually followed up with the dump receipt to assure me of this. Great service, would definitely use again and recommend.

Duane came to my home and moved a new dryer into my wash room. But first he had to install and connect the propane line. He was very efficient, cleaned up after himself and test it to make sure there was no leak. I will call him again for help on other projects I have around my home,

Cherish Moving did a fantastic job moving our things without incident. We had a long distance move so were hesitant to use them instead of a national moving company. This was much better! They were on time and the move out/move in job went well. They are fully certified and insured and we will definitely use them again. Emily and Sergio were fantastic to work with, very responsive and helped us out with everything. I recommend them for either an interstate or intrastate move!

Paul and Katelyn managed all of our requirements with timely responses and quality service, at a price far better than the other quotes we received. They even dealt with an unexpected snowstorm without missing their delivery time. We would highly recommend Paul and his company for any long distance move.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
