I have had three massages by Stephen and each time has been amazing! He is ultra professional, completely in touch with the body, the body's energy and quick to adapt and suggest alternative holistic remedies to supplement massage. Not a 'typical' massage, Stephen chants and manages to truly connect body, soul and mind....for me, a wonderful spiritual and enlightening experience! I highly recommend Capucio Massage.

I can't say enough about working with Alma. She has been a goddess of information, and encouragement, and has helped me take charge of my health destiny. When I started working with Alma, I was feeling overwhelmed by changes happening in my body. I was suffering from painful arthritis and having difficulty finding balance in my life. I knew my diet was out of control, but needed help getting on a healthier path. Alma systematically took stock of my chemistries and mapped out a plan to optimize my nutrition. She introduced me to ways of controlling my pain without drugs and made numerous resources available. She also introduced me to healthier alternatives for pain relief. Her approach was holistic, collaborative, supportive - and she made it all manageable. She met me precisely where I was and supported me forward. What a gift! I'm delighted my arthritis pain and inflammation have subsided. I continue to find pleasure in the healthy food alternatives Alma introduced me to, and my overall energy is so much better. My blood chemistries continue to improve and those improvements have garnered praise from my physician. I'm so grateful that I had the opportunity to work with her. My gratitude and whole-hearted endorsement goes to Alma!

I have suffered with debilitating migraines since I was 8. These include sensitivity to light/sound, nausea to the point of actually getting sick, pain all over my entire face/head/back of neck. I have gone into the emergency room and seen doctors and neurologists with no luck of finding something to help me. I began going to an upper cervical chiropractor which helps prevent them now, but I couldn't find anything to help the pain once it had started. I reached the point of wanting to try anything and my mother put me in contact with Tony one night during a terrible migraine. Within minutes I could already feel the hypnotherapy session helping ease my pain. Eventually after the session I fell asleep and woke up just an hour later feeling incredible. The sensitivity to light and sound was gone, the nausea disappeared and my migraine went away entirely. After a few sessions with Tony I have been able to practice self hypnosis as well as gaining new meditation skills that have helped me ease my migraine pains and even everyday stress. I would definitely recommend Tony Stafford for anyone looking to try a holistic and brand new way of healing yourself, whether the pain is emotional or physical.

I first sought treatment at Acupuncture of Lodi in January of 2016 after suffering a migraine headache approximately once per week for several months prior to my visit. I was diagnosed with migraine headaches with aura by my primary care physician and was prescribed pain medication as a coping mechanism to deal with the pain that would linger for days at a time. I found that the medication not only failed to mask the pain, as promised, but also left me feeling nauseated, dizzy and unable to conduct my daily activities, much like the migraine headache did. Needless to say, I was desperate for relief when a friend referred me to Dr. Evans of Acupuncture of Lodi. I nervously scheduled my first appointment with Dr. Evans, without knowing anything about oriental medicine. Before my first visit I recall feeling anxious that Dr. Evans would wonder why a person without any knowledge about the treatment she is seeking would dare step foot into his office. However, my first meeting with him was quite the opposite. Dr. Evans greeted me with a warm smile and utilized our first meeting as a consultation to obtain detailed knowledge about the condition I was suffering. In addition, he explained the overall theory about how oriental medicine can heal various conditions. His vast knowledge of and passion for oriental medicine was evident after a few minutes into the consultation. Dr. Evans dedicated a great deal of time toward ensuring my comfort and understanding of acupuncture and to learning about how my condition affects my overall health so as to better tailor my treatment. His professionalism and kind demeanor further convinced me that Acupuncture of Lodi was the right place for me. I have treated with Dr. Evans for approximately 1.5 years now and have been virtually cured of migraine headaches. I cannot remember the last time I spent days in a dark room hoping the extreme pain in my head would subside. Dr. Evans has helped me to understand and treat the root of my condition, rather than simply masking it with pain medication, as is a common method for migraine headaches. I can honestly say I am a firm believer in the ability of acupuncture to heal and perhaps even cure a number of ailments. I highly recommend Dr. Evans to anyone suffering from a condition that has caused debilitating pain and discomfort and has affected his or her overall enjoyment of life.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is naturopathic medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is classified as an alternative healing method, but licensed naturopathic doctors share some of the same academic background as conventional medical doctors and can often prescribe some medications. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP), naturopathic medicine is holistic care that addresses a wide range of problems including (but not limited to) allergies, chronic pain, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, obesity, respiratory conditions, heart disease, fertility problems, menopause, adrenal fatigue, cancer, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Naturopathic medicine aims to strengthen and empower the body and its organs to heal itself through low-force interventions. Here are some examples of the type of medical services often provided by naturopathic doctors, as cited by the AANP:

  • Clinical and laboratory diagnostic testing
  • Nutritional medicine
  • Botanical medicine
  • Naturopathic physical medicine (including naturopathic manipulative therapy)
  • Hygiene
  • Counseling
  • Minor surgery
  • Homeopathy
  • Acupuncture
  • Intravenous and injection therapy
  • Naturopathic obstetrics (natural childbirth)

Do naturopaths take insurance?

Many naturopathic doctors accept insurance, but a separate question is whether your insurance covers alternative and naturopathic services. There are several steps you can take to find out:

  • Verify whether you live in one of the 20 states that currently licenses naturopathic physicians:
    • Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont and Washington.
  • Confirm whether your insurance will cover naturopathic medical services. Read your insurance plan’s fine print, verify whether naturopathic doctors fall into your insurance carrier’s definition of a doctor, and confirm that the care you are receiving is considered medically necessary. Questions to ask your insurance provider could include:
    • Am I covered for this treatment by a naturopathic physician?
    • Do I need a referral?
    • Is there a list of approved naturopathic doctors in my network?
    • What will the co-pay be?
    • Are there limits to my naturopathic coverage?
  • Before seeking medical care, it’s key to understand the difference between a naturopathic doctor and a naturopath. Anyone may advertise themselves as a naturopath, while to be a licensed naturopathic doctor, a person must complete academic and clinical training.

Can naturopathic doctors prescribe medication?

Licensed naturopathic doctors can prescribe some pharmaceutical medication. Naturopathic doctors complete academic training similar to that of conventional physicians: a bachelor’s degree with a focus on pre-med studies, followed by a four-year residential naturopathic medical program whose first two years have a similar foundation to that of a conventional medical school. After completing their studies, they must pass a post-doctoral exam. Although licensed naturopathic physicians are able to prescribe medication, they usually focus on prevention rather than treatment of symptoms. A naturopathic doctor will offer a holistic approach to your care that encompasses your mental, physical and emotional health. While they will prescribe medication as needed to treat illness, they are also likely to be creating shifts in your lifestyle and nutrition to effect deeper changes in your body’s response to illness.

How do you find a good naturopath?

It’s important not to get misled by the title “naturopath” when searching for a naturopathic doctor. A naturopathic doctor is a licensed professional, while anyone who so desires can call themselves a naturopath. A naturopathic doctor has completed eight years of schooling and is licensed to provide high-quality medical care. When searching for a naturopathic doctor, a good place to start is by researching your state’s licensing and regulatory body for that profession.

Currently, 20 U.S. states license the practice of naturopathic medicine. For those seeking holistic, body-centered healing solutions, a naturopathic doctor can be a good fit. They use natural medicines as well as treatments such as electrotherapy and ayurvedic medicine to encourage the body to heal. Once you have determined a list of naturopathic physicians who are licensed in your state, look for reviews, ask for referrals, and interview the physician in person or by phone to find the right care provider for your health needs.

How long do naturopathic doctors go to school?

Like conventional physicians, naturopathic doctors undergo rigorous academic and clinical training prior to practice. Typically naturopathic doctors go to school for eight years. There are currently 20 states in the U.S. that provide licensing for naturopathic doctors. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, a naturopathic doctor must complete a bachelor’s degree and an accredited four-year residential naturopathic medical program, and pass an extensive postdoctoral board examination, the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examinations (NPLEX), in order to receive a license or registration to practice medicine.

The first two years of the residential naturopathic medical program cover many of the same areas of study as conventional medical schools. Naturopathic doctors provide primary patient holistic care. The goal of naturopathic medicine is preventative care and a focus on low force intervention healing methods. This can include natural medicines, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, homeopathy and much more. Naturopathic doctors often work in tandem with conventional medical doctors, as the two practices complement one another.
