Thanks Bruce for coming and snaking the kitchen branch drain. It was helpful and he also installed two new bathroom sink stoppers upstairs, which I would say was a lot more costly than I'd expect, which is what I'm deducting a star , but otherwise he did a fantastic job and we wouldn't have installed said sink stoppers without him!!

I contact Juan late on a Sunday evening to replace the hot water nipple under my bathroom sink...kind of an Emergency when you consider I had to turn OFF the valve on the main line. He responded with a cost estimate and arrived at my home within 45 min. Once inside he immediately started working and finished the job quickly and for the price he quoted me on the phone. He was very courteous and professional. I'm planning to contact him in a few week to come back and do some non-emergency plumbing work.. Thanks Juan!

My bathroom sink was a mess and I mean that if you turned on the water it would flood in a few seconds. My wife noticed the issue at 11 p.m. last night. I came on here and when I asked for help Sergio responded quickly and accepted my task for the very next day. Sergio and his team were not only early but they took the time to assess the issue and then walk me through how it would be fixed. They stuck to their price, which for the work done was VERY reasonable, and took the time to make sure that the work was done correctly. After they were done, they again walked me through how they fixed the sink and showed me that there were no more leaks. I am very impressed with Sergio and his team. In my time dealing with plumbers, he's been by far the best. He's earned my business for life. I'd HIGHLY recommend people to hire him

I put in a request because my plumbing was not that great. I live in a house that was built in 1928, and the toilets were not flushing right, my bathroom sink was leaking, etc. But it was mainly for our toilets. When we flushed the one toilet, it was not flushing all the way, and in our other Bathroom, when we flushed the toilet we herd a Fog Horn like sound from the pipes. After posting, Dave was the only to respond. He message me back and said, "Hi, im in the area, I can come by in the next 10 mins or so to give you a Free Estimate. Mind you this was at 8:30pm. He rushed right over told us what the issues were and said I can come back by Wens. Morning to fix it. He showed up right on time, and had it fixed in no time for a great price. My wife had asked him about the sink, he took a look, and although he had to go buy a part, he had it fied in no time at all. To fix both Bathrooms and a sink I was expecting to pay way more then he charged. He was Fast, Friendly, and took care of everything with ease. Highly Recommend him!!!!

Al is the best help one can find when in an emergency. I had a stubborn clog in the sewer line that leads from the kitchen to the main line. My kitchen sink was backed up, dishwasher not functioning as supposed to. Al responded at 10 pm in the night and asked if he could come over. I asked him to come in the morning since he would have over 50 miles to travel. He arrived right when he said he would. He was very professional and had a roll up the sleeves attitude. The entire job took more than an hour since it was an extremely hard clog. He finished the job with tremendous patience and charged me the same dollar amount he said he would during our very first conversation. What a relief! I would hire him back again in a heartbeat in the future.

My project was taking out a sink/faucet/disposer set and reinstalling the disposer and new sink and faucet set. The thing that some of the contractors said was that one couldn't install around granite, so I was a bit prepared for damage to my countertop, which was not at all desired. Not a scratch. A few unexpected challenges in that my existing disposer was too big for the piping and the piping required an adjustment, but he had some fittings in truck, so no delay. One of the parts I ordered did not arrive on time so he is coming back to hook that flange up. 1. He was precisely on time and emailed to say how far away he was. 2. Arrived neat and professional with his shoe coverings already on before entering my home 3. knew what he was talking about 4. adapted to surprises 5. most important, got along well with my dog, who supervised the entire project and approved.

Isidrio is the BEST plumber (and tech) I've worked with. He was very professional, prompt, clean, and offered a very fair price. I've used him to install my water heater, fix a bathroom faucet leak, and he just remodeled by bathroom. It's hard to find people who are not just good at their job but who are also honest. I would recommend Isidrio for any job.

Hector did a beautiful job patching a hole in my bathroom wall where some plumbing work was done (it has one little ding because of the amount of plaster he had to use and the temperature/humidity of the room; easily fixed with a swipe of spackle). He was on time, very kind and nice, easy to communicate with, and gave a super-reasonable price. I will definitely call him when I get my act together enough to get the bathroom repainted and spruced up with new light fixtures and so forth. I would recommend him highly.

The sink, toilet, and shower in one of my bathrooms was completely clogged. I tried plunging the toilet and snaking through the shower, the toilet, and the clean out behind the toilet with my 15 foot snake. No luck. Next step was to either rent a larger snake from Home Depot or call an expert. No need for the $99 "smell good plumbers" here. Jose's price to unclog my drain was not only well below those guys, but it wasn't much more than what I'd have paid to rent a snake from Home Depot. Also, Jose didn't come with any of the fine print mentioned briefly mentioned in the smell good plumber radio ads (which I read and found out they would not clear a clog by going through a roof vent or a clear out that is inside the house). Jose was prepared to do either, if necessary, but he started at the easiest method and worked his way up until the clog was cleared. He started with a small 35 foot snake through the shower. When that didn't clear the clog he went in with his camera through the clear out behind the toilet. That camera saw the clog a little over 50 feet in (my recollection is that's about the length of the Home Depot rental snake, so my money would have been wasted had I rented one). He was able to push through it with the camera and clear it out. No need for him to have brought in the heavier equipment (which he had and was prepared to use). My appointment was for between 9-10AM and he arrived just a few minutes after 9AM. Very friendly, knowledgeable, clean, punctual, and got the job done quickly. I checked all the boxes for him. Great job!

Jerry is a professional and also a kind human being. I would heartily recommend him for any project.

We woke up this morning and we had water on the floor in the Kitchen, garage and the side of the house. I wasn't sure if we had a slab leak or the water came up through the kitchen sink. I called Moffett Plumbing who we used many years ago to repair a slab leak in our kitchen and we were happy with the results. Scott from Moffett Plumbing responded quickly and examined the problem. He explained that we only had a drainage problem and what our options were. Scott was very professional and respectful. He did not try to hard sell us on something we didn't need. At the conclusion of the work, Scott picked up everything and did not leave a mess. Scott is a credit to Moffett Plumbing and I highly recommend their services and would use them again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.

Who remodels bathrooms?

The professional best equipped to handle bathroom remodeling is a general contractor. A general contractor is typically licensed by the state or region in which they work to carry out home remodeling projects. To receive licensing, they must generally demonstrate their knowledge of construction and building and safety codes. General contractors act as the organizer for the entire bathroom remodeling project, ensuring that each element (new tile, shower pan replacement, lighting installation, etc.) is completed at the appropriate time by the proper contractor. Before hiring a general contractor, it’s wise to do your research. In addition to getting several competitive bids, here are questions to ask:

  • May I see before-and-after photos of some of your recent bathroom remodels?
  • Will I need permits for this project? Do you apply for those?
  • May I see proof of insurance and licenses?
  • Can we have a written contract outlining scope of work, budget and timeline?
  • Will you be here each day overseeing the work?
