Renato and his crew, Gudiel Construction, did a fantastic job of replacing our weedy turf with beautiful rocks. The top 3 things I especially liked about working with Gudiel Construction are that Renato is organized, responsive and accessible, he and his crew did great work at a fair price, and he really made sure the job went exactly as planned in a very timely manner. These guys are great!

Dave was amazing! We asked him to help us install a small area of turf in our small yard and he treated us exactly as he would a customer with a much larger job. Such talent and perfectionism in his work- we are so happy we called in a professional and didn't try to do it ourselves! Dave even installed a drain for the area, which we hadn't thought of and are now so grateful to have!!

Adrian and his team did a great job at removing our turf so we could lay down drought tolerant planting. He was polite, knowledgeable and prompt. We would absolutely recommend him to others and will be hiring him again when we need him.

First let me start by saying how awful our front yard looked before Kole/WaterSmart got their hands on it. We moved into our home a little over two years ago and the previous owner had just mulched the yard so it looked decent. Well two months after moving in we got snow and there went our semi decent yard. Since then it has just gotten worse over time. My husband and I constantly went back and forth as to what to do with it. We have always wanted turf since we knew that real grass wouldn't last with the drought and 100 degree weather we got in the summers. We had been on the search for a reputable company that did quality work but wasn't trying to take us for every penny we had. My husband was cruising FB one day when he came across a recommendation for WaterSmart. He decided to reach out to Kole, the owner, and boy am I glad he did. From the very first correspondence, Kole was professional, polite and knowledgeable. We decided to have Kole come out to give us an estimate even though we didn't think it'd be possible because we had a somewhat tight budget. Not only did Kole show up on time but he brought samples of multiple types of turf that his company provided. He then got measurements of both sides of our yard as well as the back yard and a small patch where our trash cans are stored. Not even 24hrs later we had a detailed estimate in hand and we were surprised that it was within our budget. We went forward with signing the contract with WaterSmart and agreed upon a date to start the 1600sq.ft+ project. They again arrived on time to start. It took them two days to do all of the work (it was a beast) and they were so professional every step of the way. They made sure to clean up at the end of both days of work and I even caught some of the guys skimming our pool when a few of the stray pieces of turf landed into our pool. We absolutely adore our once hated front yard and now use it almost every day. I am so happy we made the decision to work with WaterSmart. As a home owner it is one of the best decisions we have made so far. If you are in need of Turf, these are the guys for the job. Thank you WaterSmart for giving us a yard we love!

Jordan as a person was very nice. His inital follow up was prompt and he spoke very highly of his attention to detail. As a first time homeowner, I know little about construction and heavily rely on the expert knowledge of others to assist with our remodel. We hired Jordan after meeting three other contractors based solely on our interaction with him. When we originally had Jordan out to our house it was for a flooring quote only. Jordan explained he also preformed landscaping work on the side so we added that to our list. Jordan did an amazing job installing the floors! The entire dynamic of the house changed because of the floors. I was very disappointed in a few other areas which is the reason for 4 stars. We do not currently live in the house although we do have a few items in place for weekend visits. Towards the end of the job Jordan said that they were mostly finished so I had gone to check out the progress. The tile work in both bathrooms is crooked. The master bath is very noticeable. In addition, my bedding was covered in dust and they had smeared grout into the carpet in my bedroom. There was also sloppy grouting and caulking done in several areas of my home. To add insult to injury his crew decided it was ok to help themselves to my kids popcicles - this actually upset me just asuch as the tile floor. Giving credit where it is due: Jordan and Tim did have my carpets cleaned, my bedding dry cleaned and I was given the option to have them rip up the bathroom floor or receive a discount from my final bill. Jordan did offer to replace the missing popcicles as well although that never did happen. The landscape looks nice as well but we asked to keep the remaining turf and that also didn't happen. I asked jordan about it and he said what was salvageable was in our shed - it wasnt. Again, I was very happy with the floors but the other items make it hard to say if I would rehire for additional projects. Nice guy but I didn't feel like our home was cared for in the way he said it would be. If you do decide to hire Jordan my recommendations would be: 1. Get a detailed breakdown of the work 2. Notate about the use of your personal items (they completely filled up both our garbage cans) 3. Inspect. Inspect. Inspect. Check every corner.

I had a relatively small project, but Turfusion took the time and treated my job as important as a large one. I had over 500 sq ft of turf installed. I selected one of their top grades and i am extremely happy with it. I get compliments every day about how real it looks. And what a great installation crew they had, very hard working, prompt, skilled and professional.

I was in the market for some new turf as my old turf that I had installed 9 years ago was very worn. You can definitely tell the technology has changed as the new turf looks much more realistic and the quality seem better. In my search I used Thumbtack and was immediately contacted by Cali Green Turf. They had a sales guy Nick at my house the next day where he went over my options. Of all the companies that contacted me, Nick was the most responsive and was patient with answering all of my many questions. The install team was great and the end result looks great. Thank you Cali Turf!!

Form and Focus Landscape does phenomenal work and we highly recommend them to anyone who wants the highest quality work, responsiveness, and honesty! Jacob demoed our entire backyard and replaced it with beautiful, soft turf. He also put down stone for a BBQ area and ran the gas line under the ground so we could hook up a gas BBQ. All of his guys worked day and night (literally) to complete the job as quickly as possible. At the end of the project, everything was cleaned up so professionally. All of the numbers were told to us upfront and there were no surprises. We had an initial quote from Jacob, but weren't ready to move forward. He was so honest and did not pressure us to do anything. We contacted him a few months later with new ideas and he came back out without question or hesitation. Once we decided to move forward, Jacob was always available and punctional. The quality of work was superb. He stuck to his timeline (even finished early)! His partner Aaron was also very easy to work with. He made us a beautiful a/c cover from wood. We absolutely love our new backyard and we get so many positive compliments from friends and family! Thank you!!

Over the past 10 years Eduardo Hernandez has done many landscaping projects for me, including sod and sprinkler installation, artificial turf, replacing asphalt driveway with a cement drive, cobblestone walkway, flagstone in patio, and tree trimming and removal. With these major projects out of the way, he regularly maintains the front lawn and is always willing to make time if other work becomes necessary. Eduardo is knowledgeable, personable and hardworking and I have been very pleased with all of his work.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

      • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
      • Read online reviews of client experiences.
      • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
      • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
      • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
