Jasper did an excellent job of designing and building my computer desk and storage unit. On our first meeting he was able to translate the description of what I wanted into a drawing with measurements. On his next visit he confirmed the measurements and proposed workarounds for dealing with challenges such as the room's molding as well as taking a paint sample to match the color of the unit with the room. The results were better than I expected. The unit truly looks built-in with molding around the top that matches the molding in the room. Though it's a floor to ceiling unit, it does not feel overbearing due to the design, color and seamless attachment to walls and ceiling. He was easy to work with when making adjustments in order to accommodate placement of my computer equipment. When I specified what I wanted, I got exactly that. Jason is an extremely competent woodworker and very fast executor. I would highly recommend him.

I am a SF realtor. This was Nicki's first SF property to stage. Nicki, her partner and crew did an outstanding job. The brochures & website were beautiful as a result of the staging design and color schemes. My client was extremely pleased (the opinion that matters). Also NBL's fee was really reasonable. A local stager would have charged at least $2,500. I am so fortunate to have found Nicki on thumbtack... I now have a new stager to work with.

We needed the right direction with interior design when remodeling our house. We didn't want Rachelle to tell us exactly what needed to be done, we wanted to be pointed in the right direction. Rachelle did an excellent job! On time! With confidence! Rachelle's strongest expertize is choosing colors for different rooms. It is amazing how the colors flow from one room to another. We absolutely love our new home! Thank you Rachelle.

I really enjoyed working with Maria to update the downstairs of our home. She helped us warm up the entire house just by adding art, shelving, assisting with reupholstering our kitchen chairs, wallpapering our bathroom, painting the cabinets and updating the light fixture, finding a new chandelier for our dining room, and more. She was very professional and works hard to understand your budget and stay within it, as well as get a feel for your taste. She has a great eye and it is obvious that interior design is her passion because she is amazing at what she does. We are so happy with the work Maria did and we plan on using her in the near future to do some updating to the upstairs of our home. I highly recommend Maria!

We hired Kunjan for an interior design project: to help improve our living space without making any major furniture purchases. Kunjan helped us make our apartment feel like home! She is very talented, and was a complete joy to work with. There are a several things that are worth mentioning. 1) She spent time with us, in person and on pinterest, learning what we liked and didn't like. 2) She used everything that we already had to the maximum extent possible. 3) She was great at finding cost-effective things and thinking of cost-effective solutions for what we wanted. 4) She has a really great eye for interior design and color! 5) She clearly and professionally communicated about the budget throughout the time she worked with us. 6) She was extremely committed to our project, and accommodating to our schedules. 7) She is easy going and fun. We are so happy with how our home looks now. I would hire her again in a heartbeat and highly recommend her.

I moved into a tiny apartment in SF without a single piece of furniture. I enlisted Angela's help to make the most out of my small space and was so pleased with the process and the results. She acted quickly by scheduling a call, stopping by my apartment to take measurements and following up with a layout and project scope. We then, worked together to decide on a vision of the space. She sourced pieces, ordered them or in some cases, went to the store to pick them up. She was very hands-on and helpful. Decorating an apartment from scratch can be stressful but Angela remained positive and believed in our vision, which allowed me to do the same. Now my apartment is complete and it feels better than I could have imagined. From a design perspective, it is beautiful but it is also comfortable and functional. I am stoked. The final thing I'd like to share is that working with Angela was actually way more affordable than I thought it could be - she found great deals on furnishing and often received additional designer discounts. Working with her was way easier than doing it alone, the design surpassed what I would have been able to achieve and it turned out to be so affordable. Thanks, Angela!

Scott is fantastic. He has excellent taste, and has been extraordinarily commited to helping us all the way through the interior design process, even going so far as to build some furniture for us himself at a very reasonable rate, and stopping in regularly to answer questions that inevitably arise as we paint, install lights, and furnish our 4,500 square foot co-working space. He is creative, thoughtful, and a good listener, and he has a great sense of how to draw on different design periods for a coherent yet eclectic feel. He is also sensitive to the needs of a tight budget. I recommend him without reservation, especially if you are looking for a modern look.

Serena is incredible! She designed our office space and it is so nice we have had people ask for pictures so they can try and get a similar design. Serena has such a skill for making dynamic, bright, warm, and comfortable spaces. She is quick to respond, stays within budget, and listens to feedback completely. She helped us create a vision for our space and then went above and beyond for it - like giving us multiple floor layouts for more employees as we grow. She even did all of the ordering for me and readily had a handyman and painter available to do all of the installation and painting for the space. I just had to look at designs and make decisions. Truly an effortless and incredible process. Every person that saw our office space before has been in awe of the new space. If anyone is looking for an interior designer I will 100% recommend Serena first. And if we ever move offices I know who I am calling immediately!

David is a caring and enthusiastic man and a delight to work with. He is very efficient and gets the job done quickly. I am grateful to him because, although I am an interior designer and certified color consultant, I do not have expertise in drawing to scale sketches of the spaces I'm hired to design. David helped me by doing those sketches and my clients were impressed. I gave him 4 stars only because some of the sketches needed to be redone because of miscommunication between us. I must admit though that I may have not been thoroughly clear re. measurements. David was always eager to do the best job possible, and I appreciated that immensely. Thank you David. Would hire again.

Wow! Wow! Wow! Normally interior design comes pretty easy for me...until I had a space I couldn't figure out nor deal with. I contacted Forsyth Home Design and Matt came to the rescue. From the first consult to the finished project he was there. Dealing with contractors, color choices, fabrics, and coming up with built in design options. I highly recommend them for ANY interior project that you might have. Thanks Matt!

I planned a kitchen remodel for my newly purchased house. Dylan's reasonable estimate and professionalism made himself stand out. Throughout the limited 1 month of time, Dylan and his team helped order all materials with great value and installed the wood floor in both kitchen and living room for less than a week. We liked his kitchen remodel design and it only took 2 weeks to get the kitchen ready. Strongly recommend to hire Dylan on any contracting work. His professionalism and punctuality is definitely something important you are looking for.

They staged our property for resale and we got top dollar. In addition, we have used them for some of our interior design projects both for our homes and our office.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

  • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
  • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
    • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
  • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
    • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
  • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
  • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
