Hey, Peter is a dog wizard. I was having trouble with my 2 year old golden doodle but after Peter did one session, my dog shaped up and has really improved. He taught me a routine withGrazie so that I am always training her for 10-15 min. a day. Easy and so rewarding!

Logan is great at what he does I am disabled and have a puppy that was a lot for me to handle at first. He kept knocking me down so we decided to get him some training Logan was available when I needed and he has been on time every apt. My boy has gotten better at minding we have a lot to work on still but the progress is amazing. Logan is great at showing me how to get my dog to act/behave as I want by teaching me mostly and the dog as needed he shows me what steps to take to correct things and I can follow his example of course he is better at it than me but that is why I trust his opinions and I only have great things to say about Logan and his training skills

He came to Napa and did a combined dog training lesson with my sister and I. He was very good with the dogs and got her crazy 6 month old puppy to learn to lay down within minute. I will be recommending him to anyone looking for a dog trainer.

I can't say enough good things about California Canine. The training is superb and I have no doubt you'd have to travel pretty far to find anything comparable. This trainer is very experienced, amazingly knowledgeable, utterly professional, answering every question I had and providing all the help I needed in order to ensure that my six-year-old German Shepherd rescue dog (and I!) could learn the skills we needed so that this could remain her forever home. What my dog and I have learned in this process is invaluable, and worth every single dollar. I am so grateful that I was fortunate enough to discover this fine and excellent resource.

I can’t recommend Emily enough. We rescued our three-year-old dog Kiki around eight months ago from what we can only imagine was an absolutely horrific situation. Needless to say Kiki had a number of different things that she was uncomfortable with. Emily was not only incredibly empathetic, but from day one showed Kiki unconditional love and support. Over a number of months, she worked with us and Kiki at a pace that Kiki was comfortable with in order to help her overcome her fears, and learn to trust people. She was not only incredible with Kiki, but incredible with us, she’s an incredible teacher and gave us all the tools that we needed to be successful in training Kiki in between our sessions. Throughout this process and as we have gone to find dog walkers, vets, or any person that will interact with Kiki we always say we hope they’re like Emily. She is truly someone that understands dogs and what they need, as well people to work with them in order to help them train their dogs. Thank you so much for all that you do, Emily!

Emily is fantastic! She began working with our 6 month old weim only 4 weeks ago, and he is already a different dog. He has learned to be better on the leash, developing better response to commands such as sit and stay. Emily truly listens to the needs of the family and is very responsive to the individual dog needs. She is dependable, responsible and when you meet her, you can just feel her passion and dedication to puppy training. She sent us regular daily updates about our puppy's progress, including video clips. When we first started, our puppy was shy of other dogs, but after only 2 weeks, he was braver and more assertive in the dog park with other pets. Emily is a pleasure to work with and we have just signed up for another 4 weeks of training to continue building on the progress our doggies has made. She is down to earth and caring. She is also not afraid to say when something isn't working, which we truly appreciated. Our dog didn't like the halti leash, so after a couple of weeks of training, Emily came up with a different leash option and was very honest about the reasons for the change. It's refreshing to work with such a professional. Thank you, Emily, for all your dedication and hard work!

I have worked with Mary for a week now and she has been incredible. We have a new puppy and she has really gone above and beyond to help us with him, visiting up to 3 times per day. She is very prompt, receptive to suggestions and requests, provides consistent updates, helps with training, and -- most importantly -- clearly cares about our pup! We were a little nervous to leave him alone while at work and it gives us great peace of mind to know he is in Mary's capable hands. We plan on working with Mary indefinitely to help us with our new family member. I recommend her enthusiastically for any and all of your canine walking/training/visiting needs!

John is fantastic. Our dog is a 62 lb 1 year old male, very energetic and rambunctious. When we got him, he needed not only exercise, but also training and socialization. John provides it all! He takes our dog for 90 - 120 min hikes in Funston 3/wk. John makes sure our dog is well matched with the others in the group, so they all get along and get enough exercise and positive play. Our dog is always calm and content after his walks. John also sends up pictures so we can see how much fun (and sprinting) our dog is having. Plus we've noticed a marked improvement in our dog's recall, leash training, and how well he plays with other dog since being with John. I highly recommend John and ABC Dogs!

Suzanne and Andrew are by far the best, most professional, and most responsible dog walkers and sitters we have ever had the privilege of working with! We have 2 pups -- a border collie and a rough collie -- both with their own unique needs. Our border collie is not friendly with most new dogs (but LOVES Suzanne's dog, Beau) but we never have to worry because Suzanne and Andrew are both incredible dog handlers and recognize dog body language and behaviors impeccably. Our rough collie is 5 years old and has always been terrified of stairs and hardwood floors. Suzanne somehow trained him to walk up and down a full flight of hardwood stairs during her house-sitting stays at our home -- we were BLOWN AWAY! Before she taught him stairs, we were carrying all 60 lbs of him up and down the stairs for every trip outside! Further, he has a number of tricky health issues which Suzanne is always considerate of and is able to take perfect care of him. Snooze Dog Walks are the only reason we felt comfortable going away on an international trip for a full 2 weeks recently. They sent us updates, photos, and we knew our pups were in the best hands. We can't recommend this team enough!!

Chris worked our Lab-mix, Zoe, to stop her habit of jumping on people. Chris is professional, observant, and patient. And, most importantly her training is based on kindness. She was able to assess both Zoe's and our particular needs and worked accordingly to help us. Throughout our session Chris took her time not only teaching Zoe, but also teaching us. And, Chris has given us further support through a follow-up e-mail checking on Zoe's progress. With Chris's help we are well on our way to success!

About

I have been training dogs for 55 years. I have trained in most every disciplines. My training is based on not only the dog but also the owners. Your lifestyle and your dog must work together. The breed or mix of breeds also determine your dogs behavior. This combination of factors are essential to that well behaved dog. I don't believe in robot training for your dog and know that you train a Terrier, including pit bulls, different that you train a Poodle. I have had German Shepherds, Smooth Fox Terriers, Manchester Terriers, Whippet, Poodle, Afghan Hounds and Borzoi. I am now an American Kennel Club judge and also judge international shows.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
