Air Duct Professionals did a fantastic job on my duct cleaning project. I gave them a count of AC vents and exhaust fans for their estimate. They not only quoted me the most competitive price but they held their pricing. They showed up on time and even came earlier to help work around my schedule. The technician was very professional and cleaned up after himself. He made sure to cover our furniture with plastic so the dust never spread. This is a truly professional contractor and I would definitely recommend hiring them.

Andy came out to give me a quote on installing a new EVSE (an electric car "charger") for me. I needed a new 40A, 240V circuit added to the house's main panel, as well as the EVSE itself mounted on the wall. His quote came in quite competitive to prices I received from non-licensed electricians and almost half the price of electricians I called or emailed from Angie's List. His assistant/main electrician Juan actually did all the work. Andy's sole contribution was running to Home Depot to pick up the correct (antiquated) circuit breaker for my house's 30-year-old GE panel and briefly discussing with Juan the scope of the work. Juan was excellent! A very friendly, knowledgeable guy. He was done with the entire project in about an hour and fifteen minutes, then we chatted for at least another half hour about various electrical things. I learned more about electrical stuff from watching him work and picking his brain on stuff like GFCI outlets and whole-house 100A->200A upgrades than I'd learned in years of home ownership. Though it was a very straight-forward project, I was really impressed by Juan's professionalism and how much he cared to do his best, instead of taking shortcuts. Would definitely recommend Andy and Juan for anyone on the fence about hiring them.

I contact Subcooling HVAC and they came same day, diagnosed and fixed the problem with my A/C within an hour. The tech was very friendly and even inspected the rest of my system after he fixed the problem to ensure it was working at optimum capacity. Price to fix was fair and to be honest was way less than we expected. I would definitely recommend Subcooling HVAC to family and friends.

If you need your AC maintenance or any work done the hardest thing is finding someone you can trust. Don’t be fooled by some technicians on here that will quite you a super low price then charge you extras that increase the cost later. This company gave me a fair price, did quality work and the most important really left an impression of trust. Mo was courteous, punctual and a really nice guy. I highly recommend him. You get what you pay for and when it comes to your HVAC system , do yourself a favor and go for the best.

I hired Team All Star Construction to do multiple projects at my house. From the first time I spoke with Larry he made me feel at ease with the process. My house needed HVAC, Painting, Windows, a Patio Cover, a Roof and some Landscaping. Larry told me about the PACE program and I was able to finance all my repairs with no money down and now I just pay for it along with my property taxes! Well the work done was amazing, they work like a machine! Had couple hiccups but Larry jumped on them right away and exceeded my expectations! My house is beautiful now and I will recommend them to all my friends and family! They have a customer for life! Don't hesitate to use them, they are as good as it gets!

Both Danny and Michael (technicians) were very knowledgeable. They explained what was wrong with the AC in terms that I could understand. While their website boasts "same day service", the consult happened the same day I called while the repair happened 4 days later. Donald (call center) was very obliging and professional. Our AC now works very well and I learned how to care for it better. I would recommend this company to anyone looking for an honest company who won't try to upswell you or push products on you and also gives quality service.

It’s my absolute pleasure to recommend Independent/Prestigious Heating & Air Conditioning. One of my two air conditioning units stopped working. I checked the capacitor and it was fine, so I knew it must be the compressor. I contacted one of the larger HVAC companies (I won’t name them) and their first available appointment was in 5 days…so I waited. Then it took 4 days to get the estimate (after paying a $150 service call fee)…then it took 1 week for the new compressor to come in, then that compressor was supposedly faulty, etc., etc., etc. After screwing around with this other large HVAC company for almost a month, I saw on NextDoor that someone had recommended Independent/Prestigious Heating & Air Conditioning. At around 7pm, I texted the owner Jason Roskelley and within minutes he responded to me. I told him my situation and he had me text him a picture of the unit label, etc. He said he would call his supplier at 9am the next morning to see if they had the compressor available. 9:30am Jason called me back, told me he could pick up the compressor and come over at 1:30pm to install it. Huh? I call him at 7pm the night before and he’s installing it at 1:30pm the next day? I can’t say enough about them. The two owners, Jason Roskelley and Ryan Burdick, personally installed it themselves. They cleaned up the mess that the previous company made and left me with a brand new compressor working perfectly. I later learned that Jason and Ryan used to work for one of the big HVAC companies…so basically they were doing the work while their company was overcharging the customer. Using Jason and Ryan is like cutting out the middleman (although they are properly licensed, etc.). They did a perfect job at a reasonable price. I would recommend them without reservation.

Power surges suck! Just the other day a car crashes into a power pole around the corner from where I live and the resulting surge from the exploding transformer burned through every charger and clock I had plugged directly into the wall as well as my fridge, oven and washer. I decided to give OC Appliance Masters a call and make an appointment for him to check things out the next day. I get a nice two hour window vs the 4 hour window that I've been accustomed to from previous experiences with professional service guys for fixing HVAC, electric, plumbing, cable etc. I spoke to Nick and he says he can call an hour or half an hour before the arrival time. Another plus. I was going to be home all day so I was okay with the half hour heads up call. On the day of the service Nick calls me earlier than expected and says he was able to finish his earlier appointment and if I'm available he can come earlier. I'm all for that! Who enjoys biding their time waiting for a service person? Not me. The sooner the better plus my fridge wasn't getting any cooler. When he arrives, he was a whirling dervish of information regarding possible culprits for what could be ailing my appliances and is listing them out as he's working on my fridge. He tells me he was a electrical engineer and will find out what the problem is. It turned out it was the controller board and he was able to give me an estimate immediately without saying he'd have to check the price for the part etc. This was a nice change from the other guys I've dealt with that don't say a word and have to crunch the numbers. What it told me was that he had experience with this issue before. He also had the part on hand and could get the unit back and running in no time. I was sold. After that, he also serviced the fridge's coils, at no extra charge, which were cluttered up with years of cat fur which he was shocked at seeing as he opened up my fridge's service panel. The next item he looked at was my stove/oven. Given what he saw with my fridge, his prognosis even before opening the stove/oven was that it would be expensive and I could be better off looking for a new oven but we'll look anyway. Turns out he was right. The digital display panel and control board were shot and would cost $700 if I wanted to have it fixed. Thank you for your honesty. Finally the dishwasher. Lo and behold, same problem as the others, burned out control board. Good news was that it was more reasonable to fix and wasn't going to cost as much as a new unit. Bad news was he didn't have the part on hand but we arranged for him to get the part and return to fix it later next week. The biggest take away from him during the service call was the preventative advice from Nick. Place ALL your expensive appliances on a SURGE PROTECTOR from now on. This is the first time anything like this has ever happened to me and this includes even when I was living in Denver and we would have some nasty thunderstorms that would cause power fluctuations like nobody's business so it never occurred to me to put anything except my computer and entertainment system on a nice surge protector. That's all changed now. All in all, it's hard finding a trustworthy appliance repair person. I read some of the positive reviews as well as the negative reviews of the well reviewed appliance service techs for the area and decided to take a chance with OC Masters and I'm very pleased with the results. I'm also glad that I'm dealing with a family owned and operated business since Nick and his brother are the guys who are doing all the work. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

I was impressed with Five Star HVAC. They arrived on time and diagnosed the problem in 5 minutes. When their estimate on the time to get a replacement part went longer than thought, they immediately called with the new timeline. That said, they had the part on sure within an hour and in place 5 minutes later. I greatly appreciate they did not try to up sell a nee a/c unit. I'd use then again.

I got quotes from at least 8 contractors and Eddie gave me a very competitive price. He also has a great review on yelp (check with him for how to see the reviews). He patiently answered all my questions and finished within one day for a whole house AC installation. It was the right timing for the hot season, and so far it's running good and strong. I will surely recommend Eddie to my friends/neighbors or anyone if they ask me for suggestion. At least give Eddie a call/message before making the final decesion!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
