"When I came into see Jennifer I was in a VERY SORRY state. 28 weeks pregnant (and counting), had been on a road trip for the last 3 days (~300miles of driving/day), 3 nights of different cruddy mattresses, being in a car accident where we were rear-ended, and had JUST suffered a bout of food poisoning that same morning. I had a high-stress weekend ahead of me full of family obligations and a wedding and I knew I would not be at my best in my current state. My back muscles were so tight I was in constant discomfort and I felt negative and exhausted. I was sooo relieved she was able to fit me in on the same day I requested the appointment. Jennifer listened to me vent about how horrible the past few days had been, she asked about my pain-related symptoms and their locations and then she got down to work. Within minutes we were both laughing as she worked diligently on me. I must admit, I was skeptical about her approach of "energy work" which involves lightly rocking/shaking hands on problematic areas and even areas which don't SEEM to be connected to the problematic area. For example she worked on some (trigger?) points in my forearm that she claimed would help relax muscles in my shoulder. I wasn't convinced during the treatment, but I do believe in pressure points, accupuncture lines/merridians/channels, etc. so I did my best to breathe through any discomfort and try to do MY part to let tension go. By the end of the session I definitely felt my muscles had loosened up a bit and "settled down". I thanked her and left. I slept like a BABY that night and the next morning my back was fully relaxed and I caught myself singing and laughing (a 180 from where I had been the previous day). I feel recovered and that I can confidently take on the upcoming challenges now that my body is back in function. Thank you Jennifer! If I lived in this area, I would totally be one of your regular clients, but as I was just passing through I must say "thank you" in the form of this review and wish you the best as you continue on your journey of being an excellent healer. Thank you for rescuing what was left of my vacation. I am sure I would still be in a world of pain and misery without your skilled hands!"

"I love how Nate is so knowledgeable and always learning new techniques. I usually can only handle swedish massage because I have very low pain tolerance lol. But when I went in to see Nate I had so many knots around the back of my neck and so Nate proceeded to work them out. He was perfectly firm yet gentle and when it hurt too bad he immediately backed off. However after seeing him a few times I appreciate the firmness now and feel super relaxed and de-stressed after every visit. I know that allowing him to dig deep to do his thing, I'll come out feeling amazing for so much longer than just a swedish massage. Thanks Nate!"

"Gary comes to my office and does chair massage once a week. He does such a great job that I made an appointment for a full table massage and that was even better. He is able to zero in on the exact place that needs attention and work everything out. He's really good at what he does. Highly recommended."

"I've got massages from Jessica since December 2017. I keep having low-back problems from time to time as I'm sitting all day at work and my hamstrings become too tight. She carefully listens to my requests and develops unique plans combining various massage techniques, moves, and stretches. She resolves the problem areas with smooth, uniform pressure, and also helps me become deeply relaxed. She works very efficiently and with great precision, and usually leaves me with some great tips on posture. She thoroughly understands the human body and never hesitates to explain the cause of my problems with the scientific names of muscles, ligaments, and bones. Jessica is extremely professional and takes great care to make me feel comfortable throughout the session. She has a calm, kind, intuitive, and scientific nature and it is such a wonderful experience to get a massage from her."

"My first session with Alex was, hands down, the most premium experience I've had. I've had more than a few massages and I've learned that, for the most part, the therapists have a predefined routine they've settled into and there's really no variance between clients. Most will ask if you want special focus on a particular area and maybe you'll get a few extra minutes of their routine there, but that's about it. Alex is totally different. He listened attentively to my concerns and goals for the session and put real thought into developing ideas about what the root cause of certain misalignments might be. During the bodywork, it was abundantly clear that Alex was paying attention to the specific needs of the area he was working. It wasn't five minutes on this should then five minutes on that one - it was the amount of time and work each shoulder needed. I'm super grateful for having found Alex and I'm really looking forward to continuing to work with him. For me, massage is about caring for my body - keeping it healthy and ensuring it's performing optimally. Alex's thoughtful approach is exactly what I'd been looking for."

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is Thai massage?

Thai massage, also called Thai yoga massage, combines acupressure and assisted yoga postures. Thai massage is based on the flow of energy through the body and focuses on energy lines called “sen.” It doesn’t use oils or lotions and, instead of rubbing muscles, the massage therapist compresses, pulls, stretches and rocks the recipient’s body to promote the flow of energy through these sen. In this form of massage therapy, practitioners use their hands, knees, legs and feet to apply deep muscle compression and stretch the body. It’s often performed on a mat on the floor instead of on a massage table. Like most forms of massage, Thai massage is used to relieve stress, improve range of motion and enhance flexibility. Some people also use Thai massage to address a range of health issues, including:

  • Relieving tension headaches
  • Decreasing back pain
  • Reducing joint stiffness and pain
  • Stimulating circulation and lymphatic drainage
  • Boosting energy

Because a traditional Thai massage session covers all of the muscles in your body, it typically lasts 90 minutes to 120 minutes.

How much do you tip a massage therapist?

All forms of massage therapy, from Thai massage to Swedish massage to deep tissue massage, are similar to other spa or hospitality services. So it’s appropriate to tip a massage therapist the standard hospitality rate of 15 percent to 20 percent of the cost of the session. For example, the national average cost for a deep tissue massage is $70-$90, so expect to tip $12-$18. Of course, you can always tip more or less depending on your experience, especially if you’ve opted for extra services. For example, expect to tip more for a couple’s hot stone massage session that includes aromatherapy. Also, if you’re paying with a gift certificate or coupon, or purchasing a discounted multi-session package, make sure to calculate your tip based on the full price of the massage.
