I have been searching for an Engineering position for the past two months with no luck, so I made the decision to seek professional help with my Resume and Cover Letter. During our first call, Rebecca gave me some feedback on my existing resume and explained how she can strengthen the document to make it more appealing to potential employers. Because she is the first professional I reached out to, I still wanted to "Shop Around" to seek other potential writers. Rebecca was kind enough to explain what I should be looking for IF I didn't decide to pursue her services. This honesty alone was a great factor in my decision to hire her. After my "Shopping Around" I decided to move forward with The Edit Guru. I then had her explain the full process and outline the expectations thoroughly, so that I knew exactly what services were being provided. Her communication and timing have always been clear and spot on, ensuring that each document was delivered when promised. I feel very confident with the new Resume and Cover Letter that I will be finding opportunity very soon. *Note, The better she understands your GOAL, the more she can help you. Communicate and ask questions when needed! Thank You for viewing.

Charles is a very talented writer and worked already on a few internationally acclaimed projects, for the BBC and more recently for a world class Cuban opera. Another important skill, he translates very well written ideas into video concepts, he understands well both worlds. I worked with him on a few projects and I will sure use his talents again.

I did business with Lori after losing my job of 15 years, I needed to update and revamp my Resume along with creating a professional catchy cover letter. I was stuck with writers block and needed a jump start. I reached out to several resume writers and Lori is the one that had caring in her style and truly wanted to help. She made the whole process easy for me and not only helped me with my resume and cover letter she also gave me a pep talk that helped me get my mojo back. Lori is one of those persons that still exists that care about how and what she does. With her help I am back in business and options are opening up for me. I would rehire her in a second and if you need help writing a document or reviewing documents she is your person.

Marian is one of the most ambitious, proactive and provocative writers I've ever had the pleasure to work with. While writing for DBW, she did a great job of eliciting valuable insights from industry thought leaders, identifying worthwhile new media opportunities for authors, and walking the walk when it comes to social media. Don't be fooled by her age; she's smart beyond her years.

I appreciate his attention to detail. He is informative and offers insight as to why he is making certain edits to aid in my growth and development as a writer. He provides constructive criticism when necessary while preserving my autonomy. He has been a valuable asset to my research writing. Noteworthy: Julian is not trained in scientific writing and has provided me with the most meaningful edits when compared to those who are trained in the field. The sign of a truly extraordinary editor. Highly recommend.

I was referred to Kaitlin from a coworker who spoke very highly of her and the resume writing and editing services she provided. He received a promotion earlier in the year after working with Kaitlin on his resume and job application materials. I was in the process of applying for a promotion at work and felt my resume, cover letter, and supplemental questions needed some improvements. I contacted Kaitlin and she responded immediately. I had less than a week to meet the deadline to submit my application materials and Kaitlin was available to meet with me several times. I was so appreciative that she could find the time to work with me on such short notice. It was very easy to communicate with her via phone, Skype, and email while we worked on the editing process remotely. I had a very pleasant experience working with Kaitlin. She is very professional, easy to work with, has great writing and editing skills, and will provide you with wonderful guidance throughout the entire process. Kaitlin also provided me with the confidence to do well in the interview process. After reviewing past job experiences in detail and working on a few writing assignments Kaitlin assigned, I was able to identify what I should highlight during my interviews. I walked out of both interviews feeling very confident in myself. After going through the interview process I received great news that I received the promotion! There is no doubt in my mind that a big part of being promoted was due to Kaitlin’s help! I couldn’t have done it without her. I highly recommend Kaitlin’s writing and editorial consulting services to anyone looking for help with their resume and job application materials.

Cynthia is one of the best, most empowering, most nurturing coaches I have ever had the honor of working with. Her wisdom runs as deep as her compassion, and I have felt heard, understood, and supported by her from the very first moment we talked. To me, she is a sort of Creative Midwife and Human Angel, helping me to break through years of paralyzing fear and self-doubt in order to manifest one of my oldest and dearest of dreams. Again and again, she has listened to me, encouraged me, and advocated for me in a way that gives me hope, more hope than I have ever felt before. If you're ready to change your life in a real way, contact Cynthia. Particularly for writers like myself, I can't imagine a more perfect and intuitive coach.

After seeing several books that Amie Hill has edited in our local bookstore, I asked her to review a memoir I'm working on. She provided excellent line editing and also provided some developmental ideas. While I'm still working on my book, I do recommend her services. She's both skillful and gentle and I believe other writers will find her editing enhances their work.

I have worked with Jeff for the last three years, and he is, without a doubt, one of the best people I have ever had the opportunity to work with. As his supervisor, I worked with him closely, and he consistently delivered products that were high quality. He is always open to feedback, and embodied the voice of our organization in person and via communications (digital, social, etc.). He is passionate about social justice, education, the arts, and was a champion and ally for our students. His playfulness and professionalism made him an invaluable asset to our organization.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

    • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
    • Strong writing skills.
    • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
    • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
    • Expertise in your target area.
    • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

    • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
    • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.
