Mr William came to my house to fix a bed bug, and ant problem. I was at first skeptical of the process he was doing, but he proved me wrong. Mr William did an excellent job by taking care of both problems. I would definitely refer him to friends and family if needed.

Joe was very professional. We do not know what has been causing my bites but he was reassuring that he would be available to help us. We have not been able to find any bug or insect but he has sprayed for bed bugs to see if they will appear.

I interviewed about a dozen companies before choosing one, learning along the way. I chose Ken because (1) he is an owner operator, not a salesman (2) he had a thorough inspection process (3) his demeanor was zen like coupled with a clear knowledge of termite control, a likeable guy (4) his price was extremely competitive, especially compared to a third of the pest control companies who said tenting was the only solution, for $6k. I give Ken a 5 star rating with one warning for those of you who demand punctuality. His arrival times were rough estimates. This could be because he had to come up to the South Bay from OC. But I would hire him again any day. Great guy who excels at his trade.

Active Pest control is honest, reliable, professional, clean and fast company for all your pest control problems from termites, bugs, spiders, bees, rodents, ants, ticks, and waterbugs. We got several quotes but was very impressed with Active Pest Control. They were fast in getting a termite quote to us. They were honest in the problems we had and gave us two options of controlling our termite problem. Van came out and inspected the termites. He did a thorough job of inspecting the termite areas and gave a thorough report of details of all the work that needed to be done. He gave us a good price and he was not pushy in trying to get you to do the termite work. Above all, the termite service was awesome from start to finish! I was surprised that out of all the other Pest Control company that came out he was the only one that came with shoe covers to protect our house from getting dirty. I love that extra attention to detail that they provide with their pest control service. I would recommend them to all my clients since I am a realtor and they provide great Pest Control and Termite Service with professionalism. Will definitely use them again! Two thumbs up!

Gave Centrix a try after being frustrated with big companies like Orkin and Terminex. Centrix regained my trust in how a pest control company should operate. I didn't feel like another number in a person's route. My service was personalized and the customer service was amazing. I've used them twice now and have found a permanent solution to all of my pest control needs. Will be rocommending to all my friends and family. Thanks again for everything!

Valencia Termite Control came and treated our house with Bora care and orange oil because of dry wood termite infestation in the crawlspace and attic areas. I found them to be competent, friendly, and highly professional. Since I have pets, children, and older people living with us, fumigation is out of the question since it’s expensive (kennel fees, motel expenses, food and medication packaged, etc.) and time consuming. I realize that orange oil is basically spot treatment and may require more treatment later if there should be dry wood termite infestation somewhere else in the house, but I think it is worthwhile since we don’t have worry about breathing the lingering fumigation smell. I like that Valencia Termite is a small family operation with no employees or subcontractors, so I feel comfortable having strangers in my house without worrying about sticky fingers.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you get bed bugs and how do you get rid of them?

The increase in bed bug infestations in the U.S. is a result of increased travel, lack of knowledge about preventing infestations, increased resistance of bed bugs to pesticides, and ineffective pest control practices, explains the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It’s easy to mistake bed bugs for carpet beetles or similar-looking bugs, so infestations are often not noticed when they first occur. Prevention tips include keeping areas free of clutter, regularly washing sheets and mattress covers in hot water (and don’t forget to wash the laundry bag, too), and vacuuming regularly and safely disposing of the sealed vacuum bag. Not everyone has reactions to bed bug bites, which also may be mistaken for the bites of other pests such as mosquitoes, so timely bed bug extermination depends on identification of bed bug activity. If you notice physical signs of an infestation, contact a bed bug extermination professional as soon as possible to learn about chemical and non-chemical (such as heat) treatment options. An integrated pest management plan may incorporate one or more methods.

What do pest control companies do?

Pest control companies handle all aspects of bug, rodent and animal extermination or removal. Pest control professionals visit your home or office to identify the type of pest that is troubling you and offer various treatment plans — complete with clearly outlined costs. Once you and the pest control company have a signed agreement, the pro will begin treatment. Pest treatment can range from the use of spray pesticides and gel bait to live and/or kill traps. There are a wide range of types of pesticides, many of them nontoxic for humans and other small animals. This means you may be able to have your home treated for pests without harming nearby wildlife or your dog and cat. The pest control pro will carry out the treatment plan and, depending on the service agreement, provide follow-up such as emptying traps, inspecting access points, or reapplying pesticide spray if the pests return. Costs will vary based on the type of pest you are having removed and the extent of the infestation. The average national pest control price range is $80-$130. From a minor bedbug event to an entire home termite infestation, pest control companies have got you covered.

How do you get rid of termites?

The best way to get rid of termites is to act fast. Termites are a problem that will only get worse — and no matter how much you want them to, they usually don’t magically move out on their own. There are three main types of termites: drywood, dampwood and subterranean. Drywood and dampwood termites sneak through cracks in your exterior paint, nail holes, and gaps near windows and other openings and begin to eat through your wood. Subterranean termites enter your house from the ground up by creating mud tunnels. In all cases, they survive by eating the wood of your house. The type of termites you have can steer the treatment plan.

Methods of termite extermination include fumigation, use of pesticides, and use of natural elements that are poisonous to the bugs. The extent of your termite infestation will help determine the treatment method. If you have drywood or dampwood termites that have infiltrated all aspects of the wood in your home, the pest control pro may recommend enclosing the whole house in a tent and gassing the termites via fumigation. If you have subterranean termites, often the entire footprint of the home must be treated by drilling liquid treatments into the slab or foundation of the home to exterminate the colonies. In any case, once you see signs of termites, it’s time to take action and call a pest pro.

How much does it cost to remove a mouse?

If you have a mouse in your house you’re probably quickly researching pest control costs. Mice, although tiny, can transmit diseases and also get into your food and leave unsanitary droppings around your home. If you have seen one mouse in your house, it’s likely that more have taken up residence in your crawl space, attic or basement. The national average pest control cost is $150-$200. Costs can vary depending on whether you need to get rid of a population of living mice or just dispose of a dead mouse (or full traps), how extensive the mouse population is, and where you live in the country. Here are some examples of average pest control cost for removing a mouse:

    • $150 for initial trap setup and inspection (and sealing of entry holes).
      • $50 for rodent removal service calls and emptying of traps. This visit can also include identifying and sealing entry points that were not sealed on the first visit.
    • Rodent extermination: $110-$350, depending on how heavy the rodent population is, whether the mouse infestation poses health risks, how many entrances exist and how many rodent bait stations are needed.

How much does it cost to kill bed bugs?

The cost of bed bug extermination depends primarily on how widespread the pest infestation is and how many rooms need to be treated. Other factors that can affect bed bug extermination costs are the amount of clutter in the location, additional furniture that needs to be treated, and construction of the home. Pest management professionals often have rates for room treatments, which can vary based on these factors. As an example, a pest management company treating a 10-by-15-foot room with light infestation might charge clients about $250, while the same size room with a heavy infestation and large amounts of clutter might cost the clients $300-$400. Clutter and heavier bed bug populations mean more product and longer labor time for the workers. Rates will vary from company to company, and from region to region, but the national average bed bug extermination cost is $320-$400. Bed bug heat treatments are an alternative way to exterminate these pests. Heat treatments are typically charged per square foot and tend to cost more than chemical or non-chemical spray solutions. Although effective, they are not usually recommended for occupied spaces, as the extreme temperatures can damage televisions, window dressings and other home furnishings.
