Sorry this pro can’t do your job, but we know other pros who can.
Introduction: We focus on teaching: There's a reason why in any discipline you have to get a teaching credential before you teach in schools. The thousands of hours musicians put in to become great performers don't automatically translate to being great teachers. Teaching and performing are two different disciplines and it's especially important when it comes to teaching your kids. Both owners of FreshStart studied pedagogy (the study of how to teach) which enables us to hire and train teachers to make sure they know how to teach not just play. Your children are here to learn first and foremost, not listen to their teachers perform during lessons because kids learn best from doing not observing. Our programs are either created completely from the ground up or modified to work together so that your child progresses from one program to the next without being confused and having to jump from one method to another, from toddler music class to group piano to private lessons and musicianship classes. YOUR KIDS WILL ALSO LOVE OUR: Piano Dojo Program - Our in-studio, guided, group practice program where kids get their practice done at school with other kids and learn about effective practice strategies so that they can feel confident in their ability to tackle hard assignments even when they're on their own. We help your kids practice so you don't have to. Performance Training Classes - Some schools call it masterclasses, group makeups, we do it for free so your kids get to prepare for performances, make friends, and hang out with other music-loving students - pizza included. Largest music lesson rooms in Irvine - all this square footage doesn't come cheap! But we believe your kids (and our teachers) deserve the best learning environment and that music education is worth it. High-quality instruments for lessons. We only use the highest model upright pianos in our lesson rooms - you won't find any spinets or small uprights like most other schools. This helps your kid develop technique on a consistent action and, even more importantly, accustoms their ears to hearing high-quality, beautiful sounds.

My wife learned piano when she was young. The experience was boring and dragging via the traditional (or common) teaching method. When my wife and I looked for a piano teacher for my 7-year old son, our main concern was that my son wouldn’t keep up the interest. We were lucky to find Kevin. Kevin methodologically blends in skill, theorem, dynamics since day one and keeps my son engage in learning. I can hear and feel the musical elements during my son’s daily practice in the very early stage that he was not just merely hitting notes on keyboard. It’s been almost 18 months since my son started lessons with Kevin. The progress is very obvious and pleasant! The most important thing is that my son continues enjoying playing piano and learning to appreciate the beauty of music. It’s my great pleasure to recommend Kevin to anyone who is interested in learning piano!

Weiheng's improvement and progress is a direct result of all the work he puts in on his own at home between lessons and the musical environment you provide him at home. It's really my pleasure to be part of Weiheng's musical journey and I'm looking forward to all he's going to accomplish at the piano in the future :)

My older son started lessons with Kevin about 1.5 years ago when he was 6. We had tried group lessons at pianoforte prior, but they did not keep his attention at all. Time and again, different friends would tell us stories about how their kids dreaded or quit playing piano because they didn't enjoy it. Our goal was to find a class that could build upon his joy of music, not to discourage it! So it was extremely refreshing to find Kevin, who truly has a gift for teaching piano in a way that makes it as positive and enjoyable for kids as possible. He's extremely patient as well as encouraging, a great combination when it comes to teaching young children anything that can be challenging at times. 6 months ago, we enrolled our 4 year old son into Miss. Clare's group lesson and it's been an equally wonderful experience. He was so delighted with the music he was learning that he would draw notes everywhere and would run downstairs to our piano in the morning and play the new music he had learned. Kevin and Clare are both incredibly professional and musically talented individuals, but possibly more importantly, their passion for teaching really shines when they are with their students. It's such a joy witnessing my boys learning the art of music in a truly warm, personal and caring environment. I am looking forward to watching my boys' love of music continue to grow with time and to establish a strong musical foundation to help them in their future. I would highly recommend FreshStart Piano Studio without reservation.

Kevin is truly the key to success. After studying under him for a few years now, he has shaped and molded me into a great piano player. He holds his students to a very high standard that does nothing short of setting them up for success in the piano world.

Kevin is a great piano teacher. Kevin has been very helpful to me, as a student who is starting piano a little later in life. He is very patient, knows his stuff, and corrects my (many) mistakes gently. His sense of humor and wonderful attitude make the time go very quickly. I recommend him highly.

FAQs

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I believe, as an educator in any field, we have the responsibility to our students to continuously improve and learn. A stagnant learner, is a failing teacher. Because of that belief, I'm constantly looking to improve not only my teaching but also my playing. I just recently attended the National Conference of Keyboard Pedagogy in Illinois on a full scholarship and learned about the myriad of music learning apps and new technology that will help students in my studio learn and grow even faster. I also continue to sit in, learn, and contribute in masterclasses, lessons, and forums at the Cole Conservatory of Music so that my advanced students continue to receive the most up to date information on advanced technique and repertoire. In addition to that, I continue to read and follow up on professional keyboard publications like Clavier Companion and the Piano Explorer. I also follow and learn from several popular blogs by piano teachers all over the United States. And lastly, my ongoing education is not complete without attending amazing classical concerts regularly. I believe the ticket cost is a small price to pay for the inspiration and motivation these concerts provide.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Your child's first piano teacher is the most important. It is when the foundations of piano technique and many important habits are formed and musical concepts are taught. From my experience with transfer students as a piano teacher, even just a couple months of thoughtless and thoughtlessly sequenced teaching can create bad habits that take years to correct. Choose your child's first piano teacher diligently even if you are merely gauging his/her interest level--a good piano teacher does wonders for a child's interest level and progress. The importance of those first month's lessons can not be overestimated.

  • What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

I think one of the most prevalent--and damaging--myths out there about piano teachers is that if somebody can play the piano, they can teach it. Playing piano is a very specialized skill with lots of immediate benefits and even more life-long benefits; teaching piano is an even more specialized skill especially at the beginning stages where knowledge of learning styles and child development stages are crucial. Would you let somebody fix your car just because they know how to drive one? Teaching piano and playing the piano require completely different skill sets, just because someone can play the piano well doesn't mean that they can teach piano well also.
