I highly recommend this company. The owner Steve is very straight forward about pricing and wont try to nickle and dime you with small things you don't need to get the job done. Steve is very knowledgeable and was able to answer all of my questions on the spot. The best part about working with Steve is that he is thinking multiple steps ahead. He wants to know what your future plans are so that he can save you money down the road. I am putting in a concrete walkway around the side and back of my new home and Steve recommended I set up irrigation lines for the planter I plan to put along the back fence of my property. By putting in the irrigation now it will save me a significant amount of money in the future because I wont need to dig a trench under the walkway to run the line. As a Marine Vet. Steve is able to manage his workers well and get the job done quickly, and if there is a delay for what ever reason he communicates with you immediately so you don't feel like you are out of the loop on your own home improvement project.

Manny was great! Came out and gave me a free estimate to rip out nearly 20 plants. After giving me a fair price for the project, he came back out and ripped all the plants out, took out all the root systems, and even repaired a sprinkler that was slightly accidentally damaged. I would highly recommend Manny to anyone. He was very professional and did an amazing job.

Jose was on time, courtious, and very easy to work with. He completed the job in less time than was quoted. There was one plant that was hiding an irrigation pipe and it was damaged, however Jose fixed it and I wouldn't have known anything happened had he not told me. His honesty and quality of work are excellent. Once we are ready to put new landscaping in we will be contacting him again.

I hired Marietta, who is "Miss Landscape", to install and maintain plants in my home. I wanted many, many plants but I'm not good with them myself. Marietta came over and met with me, and then quoted a price for my project - including the plants & trees, pots, and installation. I accepted. Marietta and her assistant were terrific - pleasant and respectful of my time and of my home. Miss Landscape did EVERYTHING it promised to do - something which should be routine but sadly today is not. I've included a few photos as examples of the work. I am thrilled with the results, and I look forward to a long ongoing relationship with this firm as it performs maintenance and upkeep on my beautiful plants.

Domingo is a very nice gentleman. Professional and a good worker. My yards had gotten overgrown and it was just too much for me. Domingo responded right away, came out on a Monday morning to give me an estimate which we found very reasonable. He and his helper came on Saturday, cleaned up everything I had asked for and planted the new plants and flowers I had bought to replace what he tore out for me. We were so impressed he will be doing our yard maintenance from now on!

Norma & her team were great. We hired her to lay some sod in our new backyard, lay some weed barrier/mulch, plant a couple of trees. Norma responded quickly to questions, arrived promptly to the consultation, & provided a very competitive quote. Her team arrived on the scheduled day/time & did a really nice job. The yard looks wonderful, everything was completed exactly as requested with no issues. Overall, a great experience. Would highly recommend J&J Landscaping to others.

I hired Garcias landscaping to clean up a very small yard. They removed old wood chips and laid the new ones I purchased and planted 6 small plants. The job was done to my satisfaction. Sadly I could not keep them for continuing maintenance. They are very expensive to cut the grass of a very small yard

We asked Form & Focus to design and re-landscape our front, side and back yards to give us a Southwest Zen feel. Their designer, Katie, worked closely with us to give us just what we wanted working within our budget. Her design included a Japanese style Zen garden (at our request) and new flagstone patio while using colorful stone to significantly reduce the area of our yard that needed watering. We did keep some areas of lawn, but used a new type of drought resistant grass called UC Verde buffalo grass (developed specifically for California by the University of California) that can be maintained at a meadow length, and which fits in perfectly with our natural Zen approach. The project took about 2 weeks to install and was carefully supervised by Jacob and Aaron on a daily basis. They worked with us to make adjustments to the various areas of the design as we moved along, so that everything was sized and shaped to our specs. Their people arrived promptly every day and worked through 100+ degree heat to keep us on schedule, cleaning up each night before they left. Here's what they did for us: demolition of existing landscape, installation of artificial turf, installation of flagstone/decomposed granite walkway/patio, installation of Zen garden including a 1,200 pound boulder, conversion to drip sprinkler system, installation of borders and decorative rock, installation of drought resistant grass and plants throughout. They were a pleasure to work with and I would not hesitate to use Form & Focus for future work.

We needed to freshen up our front yard before we listed it for sale. Ryan, from Cutting Edge, came out for the estimate, and we immediately felt comfortable and confident in his ability to deliver as promised. Ryan fixed our sprinklers, removed our old lawn and planted sod, as well as freshening up the flower beds. We definitely recommend Ryan, and will use his services again!

I've never been good with plants or anything green, so I gave up after trying on my own for a few months and contacted the professionals. And that is where I found Lawn Love - they quick to contact me back with a quote and I got service that week! My new lawn guy has been great - my back yard finally look like a home again. And he knows his stuff and was able to give me recommendations on my plants and flowers as well. Highly recommend!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

How much does it cost to have landscaping done?

Professional landscaping can help reinvent your outdoor space, boost your curb appeal and get a major return on investment with. Landscaping can encompass anything from adding new plants, trees and shrubs, to leveling the ground and laying sod for a lawn, to building in hardscaping such as sidewalks, water features or retaining walls. The national average landscaping price is $10,160. Landscaping prices can be far lower (with hourly rates ranging from $50 to $150) if you’re only seeking professional help with softscaping or seeking consultation on landscape design. Softscaping means adding or changing horticultural elements, such as planting a garden or adding a hedge. Hardscaping is where costs can really start to rise. Hardscaping requires labor and heavy equipment to excavate the earth; you may need to pour concrete, or you may need a pro who can transport and place gravel and other inorganic elements. Your total landscaping cost will vary based on the amount of work you want done, how much labor is required, and the cost of the materials you are using. A good rule of thumb for a major landscaping project, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects, is to budget 5 percent to 10 percent of the value of your home.

How much does it cost to landscape your front yard?

Prices for landscaping your front yard can range from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the scale of your front yard project. Your landscaping price will reflect how much change you implement, how much labor is required, and the cost of materials.

Landscaping is typically made up of softscaping and hardscaping. Softscaping refers to selecting trees, bushes, flowers and plants to achieve a desired aesthetic and to meet goals such as having a drought-tolerant yard. Hardscaping refers to moving earth, installing structures, and putting in decorative stonework, sidewalks or lighting. For softscaping, you may want to hire a landscape designer to consult on your plants and layout, and then do the digging and planting yourself or hire a gardner to handle the heavy lifting. A landscape designer’s hourly rate may range from $50 to $150 or more. If you want a turnkey approach, meaning someone who works with you to create the vision and then executes all the work, landscaping pricing will typically come down to a cost per square foot rather than an hourly rate. It’s a solid investment: Great landscaping can add up to 28 percent value to your home.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
