This was my first time using Thumbtack. Brian wrote me right away and answered my questions promptly. We were moving and needed someone to power wash the house, the windows, and concrete areas around the house. He was clear on the charges for each bit of work and stuck to his quote even when it took longer than he thought it would take. (His quote was the best, too!) The work was excellent. I was worried about two things primarily, I had vines that had been growing on our stucco that had died a couple of years ago, but were stubbornly clinging to our walls. Brian explained early on that these would not come completely off as we had hoped, but they did come off a great deal. My second worry was paint on the concrete in quite a few places from my children's projects over the years. Brian got every last paint spot off the concrete. I wish I had had them come years earlier! The outcome was fabulous. After Brian left, I noticed one spot that got missed somehow, sent him a text with a picture, and he came right out and got it that evening. We were so pleased with Brian and his co-worker. I will definitely be hiring them again when our new house needs it!

Houman arrived on time, had all of the tools and cleaned up any small messes made. He also asked for touch up paint and touched up a few small dings in the walls. Very nice and professional. I would recommend him.

River was very professional and arrived at the time we set. I hired them to repair some plaster that had water damage along side the bathtub. He analyzed the area and found that the bathtub seal was deteriorated so water was leaking into the walls. He fixed the leak which we wouldn’t have known about, applied a fast drying plaster, and painted the area with some left over paint we had in the garage. Basically he did more than I initially thought I needed in less time than we had planned. Very reasonable pricing and quality work. I would hire them again.

Jarrod's paint job made my house look brand new! My house looked super dingy and yellow and he painted it three different colors of grey. It really is so amazing how a nice coat of paint transformed our space. I have two small children and Jarrod helped keep his supplies away from my crawler. He did great work and was a pleasure to have in my home.

Golden Oaks Kitchen, Bath and Flooring company was our contractor to do all repairs on our home damages caused by water damage that happened to our home due to water leakage which was started from second floor bath room and flooded to 1st. floor damaging, dray walls, cabinets, laminates +++ .. at 1st. and second floors. This company started their restoration and repair works the day after we signed the contract. Their crew were very professional in their fields of repair and replacement, they were trying their best to satisfy us. Any time that we had comments for adding more repair at one area or paint the areas in a color to match other paints , they were not arguing that and wanted us to be happy with what we need and what they did for us. They were always on time and also helped us to deliver new cabinets, toilets ++++. Overall everything was done on a very smooth way, on time and the way that we wanted to be done.

Cori did an amazing job with the mural we hired her to paint! She was always on-time and had a nice friendly energy. She was prepared with all of her own supplies and was really thorough about cleaning up the project when she finished, which showed that she goes above and beyond for the work that she does. The process was so easy and professional - she came by to do a quick quote, we picked out colors together, and then she painted quickly and efficiently over the course of a few days. I would definitely recommend her for any of your mural or artwork needs!

Vincent was very professional, he arrived at the time he said he would. I loved the texture finish and paint done in my restroom. He was flexible with his prices, as a female customer having not much knowledge about painting I felt comfortable and felt I got the best deal I highly recommend him .

ABSOLUTELY the BEST !!!!!!! Painted 15 years ago, age had not been kind to the weathered wood and peeling tex-cote paint on the exterior of my house. I obtained six bids for contractors to paint it again. I was impressed with Richard right from the start. He was very knowledgeable, so I hired him to pain one of my houses in Winnetka, CA. There are so many good things to say about Richard and his team. Where do I start? He seeks perfection. We are talking straight lines, clean lines, and the best material possible. His price includes Dunn-Edward or Sherwin William paint. You have 1,000+ color options to choose from. Because my house is frequently beaten by the 100+ degrees San Fernando Valley sun, I opted to upgrade to Life Paint's Cool life product for a lifetime warranty. The paint keeps my house cooler. It is thick, like yogurt - we are talking amazing quality. Their preparation to the house was perfection. They dug ditches around the entire perimeter, repaired a million cracks, sandblasted the exterior, sanded the windows, and replaced broken window panes (I don't need to replace them anymore!), and even cleaned up my neighbor's yard after the sandblasting job. Richard is not just a painter, he knows how to fix anything that is wrong with the exterior construction of your house, especially if it could negatively impact the painting results. He replaced multiple rotten wood beams on my back patio, the wood flashing on my side exterior door, removed the 1950's wood beams on my front porch, repaired window sill gaps, and replaced the entire wood siding on the side of my garage. He showed me where the previous painters even used Bondo to repair the rotten wood, rather than replace it. His price included the replacement of up to 20 feet of bad wood. He charged extra for the overage, at a very fair price. Truthfully, I was just happy that he knew how to repair everything and I didn't have to hire someone else. He is an absolute professional and extremely customer friendly. His team works quietly, music is kept to a minimum, they pick up their own trash, and discard your trash from the job at the end of the day. Their work area remains clean. He is present every day, supervising the workers. If something needs to be done, he jumps right in and appears to know how to do every part of the job. Speaking of customer friendly, I changed my mind about the paint colors so many times. He even repainted areas of my house just to make me happy. He was never frustrated with me, which I appreciate. As they say, a picture says a thousand words. Take a peek at the before and after pictures. The color is amazing - I'll take credit for that! However, I couldn't do it without Richard. He is an amazing consultant. He helped me to select the color, giving consideration to shaded areas and direct sun. So, I loved Richard's work so much that I have hired him to paint the inside of my house! Listen, if you are looking for a quality paint job, you need to hire Richard. He is the best. He is also trustworthy, knowledgeable, patient, professional, and fair priced. I highly recommend him!!! RICHARD, THANK YOU FOR AN AMAZING NEW HOUSE!

I hired Mark to clean my garage door and my driveway and the side of my fence with a pressure washer machine. Driveway had some paint and fluid from the truck and garage door and fence had bird crap and random marks. He got everything off and it looks good as new.

Our job was not easy - a quirky house with slanted ceilings. Robin did a great job on the popcorn removal, and also took care of a bunch of sheet rock patches and paint. He kept the area as clean as possible, his communication was very good and his prices very fair. Would hire again.

From day one Jay kept me informed about what and why he was doing. He removed stubborn wallpaper from my bedroom in a flash and the paint job was exceptionally beautiful. He brought issues to me Immediately and advised, but did not push. It was a pleasure to work with him and his crew who are equally courteous and professional. I was bragging about Jay and his obvious expertise by day 2 of the project and will definitely hire him again if the need arises. Kudos Jay for a job well done.

Jerry painted a 50" wood fence and 6" gate for us. He provided turnkey service, including a day of priming, color-matching and procuring the paint, and doing two days of painting. He was punctual and courteous throughout and the fence looks great. I'll definitely hire Jerry again if needs come up.

Edwin initially came to my house to look at the bedroom I needed painted. He quoted me the highest but also guaranteed quality work (and good coverage since the original color in the room was a taupe and I wanted it white). So that’s why I went with edwin. I trusted that he would make sure the work was done correctly. We scheduled another day for him to come to put 3 sample colors on the walls so I could decide on the right color for the room. After he put the samples on the room, I picked a shade of white. His staff taped off the room and then began the work. After the 3 coats of paint, I went in the room to inspect. I noticed some spots that seemed uneven even after the paint had dried. Edwin was quick to fix those areas. Edwin and his assistant left that day but the next morning, I noticed more areas where I could see the old color come through. So without hesitation, Edwin said he would come back a few days later to make sure the painting of all the walls were done to my liking.

We are very pleased with our home remodel done by JC Builders & Design! Joe and his team completed all new flooring, paint, light fixtures, baseboards, and installation of 5 ceiling fans. All finished work is of highest quality. JC Builders & Design responded quickly to all inquiries, and were very thorough. Work progressed steadily from day 1, and the whole project was completed on time. We even added a couple of items, and those were also completed on time. We love our "new" house and recommend JC Builder & Design to all of of our neighbors and friends.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do painters cost?

The national average cost for an interior painter ranges between $450 and $900. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls. Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $200 to $2,500. The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted. Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards. In one area pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much does a painter charge per room?

The cost to paint a room will vary based on the size of the room, the type of paint you select, any ceiling or trim work needed, and any repairs needed. If no repairs or other additional work is needed, painting a room with contractor-grade paint could range from $1 to $2 per square foot, including materials. Selecting a luxury paint (some cost more than $100 per gallon) will certainly increase your house painting costs. Here are some additional examples of average house painting costs, per room:

  • 12x12 room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 12x12 room with an 8-foot ceiling: about $100
  • 14x16 master bedroom with a 9-foot ceiling: about $150
  • 14x16 master bedroom with an 8-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 16x16 living room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $175
  • 16x16 living room with a 20-foot ceiling: starting at $225
