I had an exceptional situation bringing 2 older dogs from a home with a doggie door to an apartment with no direct access to outdoors where there were numerous encounters with other people & many other pets. My dogs barked constantly at the new environment. With only minimal sessions my “top dog trainer” had the furkids leash trained, pottying outside & tolerant of other people & pets. Beth is a miracle worker in my book!!

In our house, we have 2 dogs, Shepherd mix and Mastiff/Pitbull and 3 people, parents and daughter. I knew it was imperative that we all get on the same page and that we address the issues at the place where they happen. Ben, from Devotion to Dogs, was terrific, from being flexible on the date, Memorial Day, to working with both dogs at the same time and the 3 people! He commands the attention of the dogs and the owners with a firm and calming hand. He is very knowledgable on pack behavior which helps him explain the dogs' perspective on the situation. Once we had that, the solutions made sense, even to our 13 year old daughter. Before Ben came, getting in and out of the house was a 3 ring circus. By the time Ben finished, we were all able to easily walk the dogs in and out of the house. We also needed help on leash walking, staying off the bed, going up and down the stairs politely and being able to open the front door without worrying what the dogs would do. Ben made sure that by the time he left we were capable in all those areas. He did not watch the clock to see how long he had been here. He worked with us until we felt the issues were addressed. I would readily recommend Devotion to Dogs for any dog training needs. Thanks Ben for helping bring calm back to our pack!

I met Mel when I enrolled my 7-month old labradoodle, Daisy, in her puppy training class. I hadn't had a dog in over 10 years and wanted a well-behaved dog as a companion if I am going to keep her for her lifetime. Mel's method is positive training with treats and repetition. Daisy thrived in the 6-week course and did outstanding during her puppy graduation. I then decided to enroll her into Mel's intermediate dog training class because I still had issues with how Daisy acted in public. It's been 3 weeks into the dog training and I can really see Daisy changing into a better behaved dog. She now knows how to heel when walking, stay for long periods, sit at a corner during her walks, stay until I release her to come to continue with our walk, doesn't go ballistic when she sees another dog & owner walking on the other side of the street and lets go of things she picks up during our walks (like rocks, paper, sticks etc) with the "Leave it" command. Mel really takes the time to explain each new step/lesson during each class. And there are no "Bad Dogs" in training, Always Positive. If I have questions between classes, I just email Mel and she always gets back to me to put me back on track. I definitely will be recommending Mel and her dogpanion dog training to my friends. Thanks, Carolyn & Daisy

I bought a dog (german shepherd puppy) from Kris a couple years ago for sport work. He set me up with training and my dog is THE best trained dog I have ever owned. She has a balanced and stable temperament on top of fantastic obedience and protection. I am so incredibly happy with her and Kris is extremely knowledgeable in dog behavior and dog training of all aspects. I recommend Taylor made Working Dogs for any source of dog training or buying.

Sarah is one of the most compassionate and empathetic dog trainers I know. I interned with her to become a dog trainer, myself, but had been training dogs for years prior. Some insights she have me into techniques I had taken for granted were remarkable. Her methods elicit results so quickly. I get real pleasure out of just watching her work and it has made me a better trainer as well. I own and train the Guinness Worls Record surfing dog, Abbie Girl.

It is a genuine pleasure and honor for me to recommend Kaelin and All Things Pups! Kaelin has been fantastic in training, understanding, and effecting a positive change in our rescue dog, Seeva. Kaelin has had such a positive impact that she is considered by me and the children as a family friend, not just a dog trainer! During Kaelin's service with us, we have spent considerable time with her, continually improving our dog, and in concert, our family's home life. Being very goal-oriented as well as a considerate business owner, Kaelin is always punctual, yet flexible when a situation arose necessitating a change of schedule. She is keenly devoted to her work, but also a real people person and she is enjoyable to be around, well organized and thrives under any adversity our dog presents. Without exception, Kaelin puts priorities first, knowing that the key to accomplishing better behavior is consistency, good habits and following up, among other wonderful traits. Kaelin is not your usual trainer and my children do not sit idly by while lessons take place. Kealin puts forth the extra effort to ensure both children participate and enjoy being part of the dog training sessions. Kaelin has even managed to convince my son to openly trust her judgment and direction, unusual for such a boy who does not readily give his trust and affection to a new person in his life. I have found Kaelin to be unselfish, dependable and diligent in the care and training of Seeva and the involvement of the children, a true blessing. I feel confident she will be an asset to your dog and thoroughly improve your pet(s) and family's home life. In closing, let me say I have no hesitation in recommending Kaelin and All Things Pups for any and all of your dog training needs!

I highly recommend Nick for people who are serious about training their dog. We had a wonderful experience while learning a lot and were given the tools to continue training our dog. Nick was professional and we felt comfortable with him right away. He was very experienced and our dog was surprisingly receptive to him. He was understanding of what was important to us and what we wanted to do. He did a great job communicating not just what to do and how to do it, but also why we should do it that way.  That was crucial because training is ongoing and we need to be able to do it on our own. Now that we’ve completed our sessions, my wife and I feel very confident in continuing what we learned and advancing with our dog.

We have a 7 mo old Bull terrier who has all the typical mischievous and mismannered habits of the breed. We have worked with one other dog trainer before and had no results. One session with Brian from Temecula Best Friend Dog training made all the difference in the world. Our puppy is all ready much more behaved, walks on a leash, and responds to all commands taught. I talk about Brian any chance I get at dog parks, pet stores etc. I would Highly recommend Brian for all your dog training needs.

Ed has been our dog trainer for about two years now. We could have stopped going to class a long time ago, but my dog and I had so much fun we keep going back. Ed has helped turn my rescue "project" into a perfect gentleman with hands-on classes and clear, no nonsense instruction. He is reliable, enthusiastic, and cares about your results. Class is an hour, but he is always willing to spend the extra time it takes to get it right.

I was very pleased with Brandon's service. My 14 year-old dog has had issues with being aggressive toward other dogs her whole life (since I rescued her at a year old). After a few sessions at my local dog park and at my condo complex, she has made a complete turnaround! Brandon showed me it's ever too late to correct a negative behavior. I wish I had known about him sooner! Now he is helping me with basic obedience for my 6 month- old puppy, and I couldn't be happier.

I needed help with my newly adopted 3.5 yr. old beautiful, strong-willed pit bull terrier. After being rejected by another trainer, Nikki @ Sky's the Limit agreed to take on the challenge. After 3 weeks, Izzy successfully graduated from her basic obedience training a better dog. She will follow commands now. The issue now is getting the humans to become better "parents ". Thank goodness there are 3 training sessions for us as well. Nikki was great with my girl and is always a phone call or text away. Her calm and reassuring demeanor has taken the fear and anxiety out of the situation helping me believe that I can be a trusted Alpha in no time at all; as long as I am consistent. It has been a great experience and I highly recommend Nikki and Sky's the Limit to anyone who needs or wants to teach an old dog new tricks.

Greg is a talented and supportive dog trainer for dogs and their parents alike. Much of his teaching is based on the philosophy contained in Karen Pryor’s book, Don’t Shoot The Dog! We have found his understanding of what makes dogs tick at different stages of their development indispensable in training our young male mixed breed.

I have had the pleasure of working with Bree at Pawsitive Principles with several of my dogs. She has assisted me with private training to work on home based issues as well as group classes. I have utilized her recommendations for a rattlesnake training course for three of my dogs and it was a great life saving experience. I hve also taken her Rally training classes and it is the best training and bonding experience I have had with my dogs. I highly recommend Pawsitive Principles for all types of training as well as dog sport activities. Your four legged friend will also thank you!

Daniel has a gift! He is so calm with our busy Rottweiler puppy! Not only does he really care about dogs, but he is an excellent trainer. He teaches our puppy 2-3 new behaviors in each session and then shows me how to reinforce the training. I believe his client list will grow quickly so I would get on his list as soon as possible! On top of his great skills, you have to add his amazing affordability. He has been a wonderful find and we are so thankful to have been able to hire him.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
