Marcel was EXCELLENT! I had an unusual catering job, one he hadn't done before. He was terrific at following up with me, patient when I had to delay getting back to him, and took care to understand exactly what I needed. And then he carried it out to the letter, with perfect results. And he's super easy to work with. By sheer coincidence, one of my event attendees had used his catering services just a couple of months before, and also had only glowing reviews of his food and his service. If you have need for catering or chef services, you can't go wrong by hiring Marcel for the job. I can't wait to use him again!

I needed a caterer for my dad's funeral reception. Spoke to other caterers but Carolina of Gourmet Lover's Catering was the only one who gave her condolences, this meant a lot to me. The full service presentation was tasteful, the food delicious and reasonably priced. There were no exta added on fees like the other caterers. I highly recommend Gourmet Lover's Catering, Boris & Carolina are a wonderful team and you will not be disappointed.

I contacted Michael for a backyard casual menu catering job for about 50 people. He was very professional over the phone and provided many ideas to help make the event a success. In addition, he and his assistant provided a tasting for myself and my husband to which we were pleased with the presentation. He provided a clear, easy to read professional estimate and was prompt to respond to any emails/phone calls. We ultimately decided to use a local restaurant for this particular event, however I would definitely recommend Michael and Sensuous Taste Catering as well as use them for any upcoming events.

I highly recommend Chef Mumsie for a wedding that needs catering or for any event that involves great food and wonderful service. It is hard to describe the quality of good food other than to say that it was delicious and all the guests were raving about it. Appetizers included incredible onion pastry puffs that were the talk of more than one conversation I had that night. Salad was also a big hit, not something one usually expects to say about salad. The entree was talked, posted, and blogged about. Beautiful flatware and table settings were used, and the service was light-footed, courteous, and professional. We felt we were in a 5-star hotel, not our own backyard (which is where we actually were). Aside from all this, I want to mention how impressed we were with the hard work that was so evident. Chef Mumsie's staff was present from 2pm on toward 11pm and never stopped moving for a second. We were promised that we would not have to worry about a single event during the day and that was exactly what happened. Without even realizing that we had left so much in the hands of our caterers, we passed the night catching up with old friends, connecting people, taking photos, and meeting each other's friends from far off -- never once did we have to stop to check up on any details of any kind. Chef Mumsie seemed to be in eight places at once at any moment, and everything took care of itself as if by magic. There were no hidden charges, unexpected twists, or demands for attention. We are very impressed and grateful for their efforts in feeding and satisfying 80+ people in a somewhat confined space -- done with grace, speed, and invisibility. .. and deliciousness!

We just had a college graduation party for our daughter on 4/30/16 with about 80-100 people and it happened to be at our new house. This was the very first party at our new house and we were quite nervous about how it would go. At our old house, we have had many many parties and we had a system in place for everything down to the layout of the tables, food serving area, cooking area, lighting, etc., At our new house, it was first and foremost a bit challenging because of our steep driveway with no room for turnaround for the bbq trailer. Pam came 2 weeks prior to the event and put together a workable plan. She worked it out by leaving the trailer in the culdesac below and cooking everything there then transported everything in cambros up to where the party was in her SUV. The food was fabulous and everyone thoroughly enjoyed all of it. The menu consisted of the following; pulled pork, santa maria style tri-tip, and 3 sides which were bbq beans, twice baked mashed potatoes with the fixings, and 2-cheese mac-n-cheese. We also had 2 appetizers which were the pig candy and the links in a blanket. All was very delicious! We took care of the desserts ourselves but worked it out with Pam for an additional crew member to take care of serving the desserts. We had custom cupcakes, donuts, and smores. Pam and her crew were very attentive to our guests and even took care of helping with making the smores over the fire pit for the kids and others. I remember Pam saying, this was the first time in many years that she made smores. I bring this up only because, if you're looking for a more personable caterer who will customize things for your party then, Pitt Stop Bbq is the caterer you should hire. Since I like to be quite thorough, I asked for and received pricing from a total of 6 caterers and interviewed a total of 4 of them. The common denominator with the others was they simply wanted to do the bare minimum, count every single plate only to charge you more for the additional plates used, and then quickly leave. This was far from the case with Pam and her crew. They were very friendly and jumped in where needed and as needed. I definitely look forward to using them again the next time because it was soooooo nice not having to worry about the cooking and serving and cleaning up. My wife and I and family were simply able to host and mingle rather than being stressed out with all the particulars. Thanks Pam and crew, you guys made our event special and successful. Ron, Ana, and family.

Alexis was amazing form start to finish! I was giving a last minute birthday party for my husband and 4 other friends. I had a theme in mind and a budget to work with for about 20 people. Alexis came up with great suggestions for my theme and stayed right on budget. She delivered, prepared and set up everything for me and all with grace and charm. The food was way beyond the quality I expected. I clearly got more than I paid for too. I highly recommend her custom catering services and will definitely call on her again when the need arrises.

Hiring Steven and his phenomenal crew was the best decision we could have made for our event! We were tremendously impressed by Steven's professionalism and flexibility to all of our requests, he is an incredibly smart and resourceful businessman and was able accommodate our many brand-standards (for a very attractive price) and wow our guests with the results. The food was simply delicious, the service was exceptional (very warm and affable) and the set up/breakdown was seamless even in our small half kitchen and office space! If you're looking to work with a professional and provide a seamless catering service at your next event, I urge you to hire Steven!!

Bill Blackburn was extremely professional, responded quickly to our requests, was easy to get ahold of, and worked with our unusual event needs. He was on time and made sure no details were missed. His pricing was reasonable, and the service was excellent! After the event we were asked by numerous people who the caterer was and how we found him. We were told by everyone that he didn't miss a beat!

OMG! Chef James [and his sous chef Rob (of partylink staffing)] went so over and beyond our expectations! We chose his catering services for our May 28, 2016 wedding although we're not from Corona area-- just because they gave the lowest price... and we notified them just a few months before our wedding date. They were able to still give an outstanding service. Budget was a big issue with us and he understood. He worked his way around it like a fairy godfather... our guests kept on raving about how good the food was. Chef James was definitely like a Big Brother! It's like his calling and mission. For the blessing of food, he even sang "Your Grace" like a true jazz singer. We just can't thank him and his staff enough. I really hope and pray that more and more people will discover his food and services. So highly recommended! Thank you so much Chef James! - from Joan and Hermin

I have hired 4F Creative to assist with multiple corporate events--client cocktail parties ranging from 25-75 people and even a hosted whiskey tasting. Gina has been fantastic. Such a great resource to assist with ordering the catering, setting up, interacting with guests, pouring cocktails, and even clean up. I could not imagine a successful event without Gina. Completely stress free and 110% reliable service.

The price was excellent and we had so much food. With about 100 guests for a fight party, you can imagine how much food we needed, the event and the catering went great.I have been to several taco bar events since my own and although most have been professional and extremely sweet, hands down this food is by far the best, hands down.I appreciate your business and professionalism-Antonia

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
