I’ve been training with OJ since June, and he’s by far the best. I was always hesitant when considering getting a trainer but I definitely made the right choice when I chose him. He’s friendly, punctual, and incredibly motivating. He’s considerate of your schedule and will accommodate you as best he can. He’s located in Long Beach and even though it’s about a 30 minute drive from me I looked forward to my workouts with him. Everyone in his facility is so nice and makes you feel comfortable and relaxed. You’re basically family! If you’re looking for results and don’t mind putting in some hard work he’s your man.

Hands down Jobi Morrison is the BEST personal trainer! I have been training with Jobi for 5 years. I'm the strongest I have ever been! My workouts are never boring. I always look forward to see how he will challenge me with cardio, strength and balance and I am never disappointed! Jobi always takes the time to listen to my questions about fitness and nutrition and always provides sound advice. I usually shy away from recommending people or businesses, but with Jobi and Fitness Comes First I say Go Now! You will NOT be disappointed!

Aaron is a brilliant personal trainer. I started my training with Aaron to help prevent another injury to my hip (due to extensive running). I’m a classically trainer pianist and cellist and music is my career and life, therefor I have to be very cautious with my hands. I’ve worked with other trainers in the past and the main issue is most of them do not understand the concern with my hands and tendons. Aaron was extremely patient and always respected exercises I wanted to avoid due to my hands. He also resolved the problem in my hip and helped to prevent another injury in the future.

She is very knowledgeable and take the time to analyze my strengths and weaknesses before we start our training..which are very helpful. It's not about how many reps..it's about the posture. I'm tried of getting hurt at the gym. She taught me how to workout safely and effectively.

I worked with Margo over the course of about 5 months and had a great experience. I had already been exercising consistently for a while but Margo helped me bring my fitness to a whole new level. He created a personalized workout plan that incorporated the things I wanted to focus on: functional fitness and MMA. Throughout our time together we also modified and tweaked my workout to focus on my weaknesses. He was always available for questions and delivered on his promises. If I didn't have to move away I would still be training with Margo, and I highly recommend him to any of my friends who want to push themselves past their comfort zone.

My husband and I both work out with Donna. What we love is how she customizes our workouts for our specific needs. No two training sessions are exactly alike, which make them fun and challenging. She comes up with inventive kick-ass routines to continuously keep us on out toes.

We have been training with Shoshanna since March. My daughters and I have worked with trainers before however, it never stuck. Shoshanna has a way of keeping us motivated and encouraging us to stick with it. Shoshanna has specialized workouts for each of us and they have been extremely effective. We have not lost a ton of weight but, we are toned and we have lost inches. She is very good at what she does but, she will not take it easy on you. She will push you and you will have muscles hurt that you didn't even know you had but, I ALWAYS feel great after a workout with Shoshanna!! We are very lucky to have found her!!!

Dave has been my trainer since about 2006 and I couldn't be happier with his service. As a gym rat since high school, I've switched a lot between training myself and using a variety of personal trainers. I'm well educated in mechanics and nutrition and can spot a poser a mile away. Dave is certified by the ACSM and knows his stuff well. And although I might do fine on my own, I find that using a skilled trainer like Dave keeps me accountable and pushes me on days I don't feel like working. And it really helps that he shares my training philosophies and is easy to get along with. His current facility at Newport Workout is clean and uncrowded. If there's anything I could criticize, its that he's too far away now that I've moved up the highway. If you're even thinking about it, just try him out and you'll leave impressed– Highly Recommended! (in my humble but accurate opinion :)

I worked with Anthony from my sophomore year of high school to my senior year, and his training truly prepared me to be a Division 1 athlete and helped to keep my body healthy. When I first started training with Anthony I had a shoulder injury that prevented me from performing on the volleyball court and left me with constant shoulder pain, after a few months my injury was not only healed but I was actually playing better than I ever had. Throughout my time training with Anthony I gained 6-8 inches on my vertical jump and became much more powerful and explosive on the court allowing me to play on high level teams and be recruited by top schools throughout the nation. All of the training was very specific to my sport and it definitely showed. The focus on not only pushing my strength, but doing the lifts with the right technique kept my body healthy while still growing much stronger. Coming in to division 1 volleyball after working with him I was not only prepared, but ahead of the curve for our demanding strength and conditioning workouts. All in all, working with Anthony not only saved my shoulder and therefore my volleyball future, but helped make my entire body stronger and ready for the high impact of a division 1 sport!

Last November, I spent several weeks reading many online reviews, looking to hire a personal trainer. The process was overwhelming. I got a tip to use Thumbtack.com to help me on my quest, best thing I could’ve done.  The process couldn’t have been simpler and efficient; I received nearly a dozen quotes from some of the most qualified PTs around.  I finally settled with a mid-range quote from Matador Performance Center – their facility is not too far from where I work so it worked out great. The MPC staff is friendly, provided timely feedback, was responsive to all my questions and took the time to explain how their system of being placed with a trainer worked.  I felt very comfortable with the whole process and more so when I toured the facility, saw PTs in action with clients and met some of them. I love that there is no hard selling taking place.  I received 2 complimentary sessions which included a full assessment and full training session . As for the training sessions, the workouts were challenging but always within my ability to perform them.  My flexibility has improved, I feel stronger with each passing day – I never thought I’d actually enjoy working out. My Trainer is knowledgeable, professional, courteous, supportive and I truly feel he has my best interest at heart.  I recommend anyone looking for a trainer to contact Matador Performance Center, they will find the right personal trainer for you..

Jon is the best trainer around. With his guidance, both nutritional and training, I have gone from 271 pounds to 215 pounds in a year and a half. At 50, that is a heck of an accomplishment, and I couldn't have done it without Jon. He is the GOAT!

Haley is focused on helping me achieve my goals and makes every session challenging (& somehow fun). My fitness is increasing and I’ve seen improvements in my ability to box, complete more sit ups / core exercises, Haley pushes me harder throughout each session. I find I actually look forward to my workouts. I must be a glutton for punishment. Importantly: Haley ensures that my technique is always correct to avoid any injuries. She is extremely reliable & punctual – always set up & ready to start training ahead of time, with an exercise routine planned. I thoroughly enjoy working out in the outdoor environment, and would recommend Haley to anyone looking to improve their fitness with a dedicated trainer. Haley is the one!

Jorge is awesome. Started working on strength training with him and I was amazed how the small adjustments he had me make here and there made such a big difference. He also showed me how to correctly perform some exercises I dreaded before. Now we've transition to training Muay Thai and I'm more than happy with the progress I'm making with Jorge training me. I'm convinced that he can meet anyone's training needs.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What should you wear to kickboxing?

What you wear to kickboxing can vary based on the setting. For kickboxing group fitness classes that are part of a gym’s cardio class schedule, standard fitness attire is appropriate. Athletic sneakers, pants or shorts that you can comfortably kick in without getting tangled or flashing anyone, and a top that allows for easy movement when punching and jabbing are all good choices. You won’t need protective gear or gloves, as most cardio-based kickboxing classes do not use punching bags.

Kickboxing training that takes place at a martial arts studio typically requires protective gear. You may need boxing gloves (beginners may want 12-ounce or heavier gloves for more cushioning) and hand wraps that protect and support your hands under the gloves while you punch the bag. If your kickboxing training includes sparring with opponents, you’ll need a mouthguard and any protective head and body gear your studio requires. Always be sure to bring plenty of water, too.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

Is kickboxing hard?

Kickboxing is as intense a workout as you want it to be. As with any fitness regimen, the more effort you put in, the more results you will get. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how physically challenging it is. Combat or self-defense kickboxing, where you train in a martial arts studio with sandbags or spar against combat partners, can be an intense physical workout. Group kickboxing classes that use sandbags as part of the workout will also elevate the degree of intensity, because of the level of exertion punching and kicking the bag requires. Cardio kickboxing group fitness, which employ kicking and punching moves but no sandbags, has comparable intensity to jogging but works a wider range of muscles while increasing strength, flexibility and coordination. Here are some of the core kickboxing moves:

  • Cross: A straight punch that you throw slightly across your body, using your dominant hand.
  • Jab: A quick, straight, face punch. Usually thrown with the non-dominant hand.
  • Uppercut: A punch thrown up from the midsection (using either hand) that connects with the underside of your opponent’s chin.
  • Hook: A curved punch (using either hand) that connects with your competitor’s jaw or chin.
  • Side kick: A kick delivered when your competitor is at an angle to you. Raise your leg to the side, then bend at the knee to deliver the kick.
  • Front kick: A kick delivered straight on while you are facing your opponent.
  • Roundhouse kick: A kick delivered by swinging a leg up in a clockwise or counterclockwise motion (depending on which leg you’re using) with momentum to strike the opponent with the instep of the foot.

What do you need for kickboxing?

What you need to bring to kickboxing depends on where you are working out and what your goals are. For a gym or fitness club’s cardio-based group kickboxing class that does not use punching bags, you generally need only appropriate workout gear and enough water. For kickboxers who are training in a martial arts studio, working one-on-one with a trainer toward a specific goal or sparring with competitors, you will need your own boxing gloves (12- to 16-ounce gloves provide more protection for beginners) and hand wraps (to protect and support your hands under the gloves, as well as keep them dry). If your lessons are in a martial arts studio, you may not be permitted to wear shoes, so bring clean socks if you don’t like to go barefoot. If your training includes sparring, you may be required to wear a mouthguard and/or protective headgear. Whether you’re in a group fitness class or hardcore training session, bring a sweat towel for your comfort and the comfort of people around you.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.
