"So I'm a 56 y/o male. Always wanting to see an MT but was uncomfortable in doing so. Stepping out of my comfort zone I wanted a therapist who was an experienced professional who could also make me feel comfortable during my session. I found that in Mary. There are so many positives I can say about her I could probably write a book. During my massage I actually told Mary that "if I could have her massage me every day I would", that should say a lot. I not only loved my treatment but liked how she explained what she was doing and its benefits. After my session driving home I had so much energy I just wanted to go out and do something active but I took Mary's advice and went home and rested, glad I did. Needless to say I'll be seen Mary as often as I can. No need to see any one else. I seriously recommend her."

"I had strained the muscles in my Lower back do heavy lifting and overdoing the cardio. I typiy run 3-6!miles per day aside from weight training and had been unable to for several weeks. My lower back muscles would spasm and not let up just from walking at a brisk pace... Running was not even possible. After my first trigger point massage with Maxx I was able to run a mile and a half before I started tightening. The next day I ran 2.5 miles and again over did it. When I showed up at Maxx's door step I was limping along like and old woman again. Once again I left his place feeling 100% better. I am almost 100% at this time thanks to his trigger point massage. It is amazing!!! No, it isn't nice a relaxing like a Swedish massage, but boy do I feel better afterwards! Aside from being a massage therapist, Maxx is a personal trainer and I really appreciate the knowledge he has regarding muscles and different exercises and body mechanics. I think this is what makes him stand out above the rest! Thanks Maxx!! See you soon!"

"Jenni gives the best massages I've ever received. I've been to several therapists over time and I'd easily rate hers the best. She knows how to get the trouble spots without torturing you as well as just a really relaxing overall experience. She's very kind, professional, and meets my requests for the day - level of firmness, specific areas, etc. Love Jenni's massages!!"

"What I appreciate most about prime body works is that they understand the body on a technical level, like an experienced physical therapist. I go there when my lower back and hip pain becomes a distraction. Shawn knows what wrong based upon the pain that I have and ends up massaging me in places where I never know had muscle!"

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is pregnancy massage?

Pregnancy massage is a therapeutic massage tailored specifically to the needs of a pregnant woman’s body. Before having a prenatal massage, always check in with your prenatal care provider and ask if massage therapy will be safe for you and your pregnancy. A pregnancy massage is much more than just an indulgence. The specialized strokes and techniques used to loosen tight muscles, reduce swelling, alleviate pressure, and ease tension provide positive health benefits for both you and your baby. Experts recommend finding a massage therapist who has received additional training on prenatal massage techniques. This is typically a certification above and beyond their standard massage therapy certification and training requirements. During the massage you will likely lie on your side or in a semi-reclined position; these supported poses keep you and the baby comfortable and free from strain or undue pressure. During the massage, the therapist will listen to what body challenges you are experiencing and work to release tension. The massage should be a relaxing and very soothing experience.

Is hot stone massage safe in pregnancy?

If you’re ready for relaxation and relief from pregnancy pains, prenatal massage may be a great healing option. Once your prenatal care provider has approved you for pregnancy massage, look for a licensed massage therapist who also has training and certification in prenatal massage techniques.

The safety of hot stone massage during pregnancy depends on several factors including the stage of your pregnancy and where on the body the hot stones are applied. The massage therapist should avoid raising your core temperature or using hot stones on the abdomen. When in doubt, talk to your prenatal care provider.

Is Swedish massage safe during pregnancy?

As long as your prenatal care physician has cleared you for prenatal massage, it should be safe to indulge yourself in a Swedish massage during pregnancy. In fact, scheduling regular pregnancy massages can have wonderful health benefits for you and the baby. Swedish and other massages can feel great and also have a variety of health benefits, according to studies published by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. Some of the benefits of pregnancy massage include reduction in leg and back pain, lower levels of anxiety and depression, and a better overall mood.

To find the right massage therapist for you, read the therapist’s online reviews and call to ask them about their experience with prenatal massage. Massage therapists who have been specially trained in prenatal massage techniques often advertise this area of expertise on their websites. Don’t hesitate to ask questions beforehand, and to communicate during the massage about what does and does not feel good.

How much are pregnancy massages?

Prenatal massages can be a safe and therapeutic way to alleviate the aches and pains of pregnancy. A prenatal massage can promote a sense of relaxation and well-being for expectant mothers. The national average cost for a pregnancy massage ranges between $70 and $90. The cost of a pregnancy massage will vary depending on where you live, the length of the massage, and the massage therapist. Typically, the longer a massage, the higher the cost. Some massage therapists charge the same rate per minute, regardless of massage length, while others charge less per minute for longer appointments. Here are two examples of average prenatal massage costs:

  • Therapist A: Offers a 30-minute massage for $45, 45 minutes for $60, 60 minutes for $75, 75 minutes for $90 and 90 minutes for $105.
  • Therapist B: offers a 30-minute massage for $45, a 60-minute massage for $85, a 90-minute massage for $115 and a 120-minute massage for $145.

Can you have massages while pregnant?

Not only can you have a massage while pregnant, multiple scientific studies published by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services demonstrate that pregnancy massages provide physical and mental benefits to pregnant women and women in labor. Always ask your OB-GYN about receiving massages before starting any massage therapy to make sure it is safe for your own pregnancy. Pregnancy massage can alleviate pain, improve mental health and feel great. According to the DHHS, the benefits can include:

  • Decreased depression.
  • Decreased anxiety.
  • Decreased leg and back pain.
  • Lower cortisol levels, which in turn lowers prematurity rates.
  • Lessened labor pain (for women who received massage during labor).
  • Labor time that is three hours shorter, on average, for women who receive massage during labor.
