First of all, I want to point out that they installed my bathroom faucets without issue but did a terrible job at a simple baseboard replacement. They said they couldn’t find the matching size, but instead of informing us and letting us to decide how to proceed, they went ahead and installed the mismatched baseboard! It looked terrible! It looks worse now than before. It has been a week and they still haven’t contacted me to apologize or arrange to fix it. In fact they said to come back and fix it would cost us a service fee. Hence this review. They were very unprofessional and I do not recommend them at all. Note - they also did not clean up well after installing the sinks. I was very disappointed and will not be using this handyman nor thumbtack again.

Mike just finished a floor tile installation for me. He provided a clear and concise quote and followed the agreement as written. I am extremely pleased with the complete job from pre-installation prep, precise layout, professional installation and thorough cleanup. He was always on time and finished as promised. Kevin Ghazarian worked with me on a variety of prominent projects at my home. In all aspects from budgeting, design, planning and organization of the construction schedule, he was a tremendous asset. On each home improvement he displayed exceptional qualities of creative-problem solving, fortitude as a leader and task-master and attention to detail in design and craftsmanship. I am very pleased on how well the projects turned out, which is due largely to his professional contributions. Highlights of projects are described as follows: 1. Interior painting of several rooms and kitchen. The design motif was a traditional Tuscani color scheme. The original and uniquely beautiful architectural elements such as the curved kitchen cabinets, wordolf walls, crown mouldings, bay windows and fire place mantel pieces were individually painted separate colors. This was challenging in its multi color design and tedious attention to painting the details. In two rooms alone there were 15 different colors used, all of which had to be the perfect color and hue. 2. Installation of wood floors. A beautiful distressed antique wood flooring was installed in the kitchen, pantry, bathroom and large family room. This involved subfloor demolition, removal and replacement, and the detailed installation of wood flooring and moulding. The hard, back breaking work required a number of workers managed by Kevin. As a result, the work flow was systematically optimized and “driven” until the project’s completion. Kevin was a relentless task master and has many skills as a talented worker. 3. Electrical rewiring of bathroom and hallway. The old wiring was faulty and insufficient and new wiring was pulled and replaced. All ceiling light fixtures, electrical outlets and switches were chosen and installed. A 3 way switch system was a necessity and was devised quickly and installed correctly to code by Kevin. This all required the knowledge and skill of a trained electrician. 4. Construction of exterior deck. This project involved much post production planning and design. “Trek” decking materials, sub deck foundations, metal piers, treated lumber of all sizes, and all the special screws and bolts needed to be estimated and purchased for this large construction project. Unlike a simple rectangular shape, this deck was complex in design with multiple angles, levels and steps. Cutting perfect angles and lengths of Trek decking were a necessity in order for this deck to turn out as provocative and beautiful as it did.

My girlfriend and I bought a townhouse in need of some TLC, including ripping out old tile and installing new flooring. Mike did a wonderful job of listening to my needs and requests in regards to timing, material, style, budget, and scope of work. The photos of his previous work showed great quality and his estimate for the job was for a competitive price. This paired with his amiable nature pushed us to move forward with him. Mike and his team were very communicative and worked professionally until the job was complete. My girlfriend and and I are 100% satisfied with the work Mike and his team did on the house. I highly recommend Mike and Golden Oak and will definitely use them in any future flooring projects. Thanks Mike!

Eddie has done multiple projects at our house and all of them have been first-rate: re-wired the garage to add two additional lights, hung a porch swing from the front patio ceiling, installed a flag holder on a pillar. Eddie is an expert contractor. He's responsive and professional and easy going. He'll work with you to talk through your options, work within your budget and make sure you're satisfied afterward. Look no further. This the professional you want to hire. Eddie is who I hire every time!

I had him come to remove a ceiling fan and install a new ceiling fan and wall switch. Because did such a nice job, I had him remove and install two bath faucets one of which needed more repair than I thought. He also repaired my tub faucet which I knew needed lots of work. If I need anymore repairs, I will definitely call him.

Had a excellent experience with BCD Construction. I have had problems in the past with contractors cancelling and just not showing up, this was absolutely not the case with BCD. They showed up on time when they said they would. All the people who worked on my job (installation of vinyl flooring and baseboards) were very nice and helpful, and went beyond to make sure things were done properly. If you want honest , professional people who get the job done right you will be happy in choosing BCD.

Very happy with the owner (5/5) and the work. He communicated very well and even though issues occurred he owned up to all of them. He takes time with his projects so be very patient. Got three floors completed with wood-look tiles. Originally had carpet and ceramic tile all throughout. Demo and installation came out to a good price. My main reason for the four stars as opposed to the five is due to the fact that the walls were not covered with plastic so we had to get our walls retouched. (A friend later informed us that covering should have been a must. ) Other than that I definitely see myself using him again and referring him to others.

One day we wandered into Morena and found ourselves talking with Kate about remodeling our bathrooms and possibly our kitchen. She suggested sending John out to appraise the labor cost. Soon we had John, Sami and Mike in our home and a discussion started about all the things we would like and to our amazement we were assured that they could do it all. We were pleased that we could have all the work done without having to shop for additional contractors. We agreed to refinish the kitchen cabinets, replace the kitchen island counter, install a new hood over the cooktop, reface a fireplace, extensive remodel and update of two bathrooms, repaint most of the interior of the house and re-polish all the travertine flooring. Immediately we had a bevy of workmen starting cabinet refinishing, wall and ceiling painting. Work was continuous to completion. Sami was very helpful by suggesting and selecting materials that resulted in a pleasant decor. All problems, which were minor, were corrected in a timely fashion. We were very pleased with the work that Morena Home Design did for us.

We decided to install hardwood floor in all of the down stairs and tiles in bathrooms. We consider 5 local reputable flooring companies and out of these five companies "Hardwood and Tile Discounters" were the most professional, knowledgeable, and easy to work with. Their price very good. They delivered a good quality workmanship, and they warranty their work. I have recommend them to some of my relatives, and they have had similar experience. So i strongly recommend Hardwood and Tile Discounters Regards, Sam G

I have worked with Nick for over a two decades now. He has done numerous repair jobs and/or remodels for me on my homes as well as worked on a few rental properties I own. Everything from a roof repair, plumbing leaks/new plumbing, tile work, a new fence, Jacuzzi installations to full bathroom & kitchen remodels. He's always shown up on time when he said he'd be here and has completed the projects in the amount of time he estimated. His pricing has always been fair and the quality of work has always been exceptional. He cleans up after himself when he's done and makes sure that you're happy with everything before signing off on the work. He's a great guy to work with and has great sens of humor. With all the bad stuff you hear about construction people and contractors out there, he's a breath of fresh air. I've done everything from full new construction work to minor repairs and he's always the guy I call first. I'd recommend him to anyone looking for someone that they can count on the give you a good deal and get the job done without any headaches. Ken aka Monty

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

  • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
    • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install tile?

Tile installation costs vary widely depending on the tiles you choose, where you want them installed, and what kind of demolition and surface preparation you need to have done. The national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The more tiles that need to be cut by hand and laid on the surface, the higher the total cost. Tile installation professionals can handle many different types of stone, ceramic and porcelain tiles, applying them in kitchens, bathrooms, hallways and entranceways. They can create anything from artistic mosaic backsplashes in your kitchen to modern shower enclosures to rustic patios in your backyard. Tile installation professions often can remove existing flooring or old tiles and replace drywall. Tile prices range from $1 to more than $50 per square foot — handmade ones are even priced individually — depending on the material. Rustic, handmade or special-use tiles cost more to install because they must be applied to the surface one by one, rather than in a sheet. For most jobs, tile installation costs are based on the square footage of the project. For example, a standard 6-foot by 8-foot shower tile installation can average $1,200-$1,600, depending on whether the tiles go to the top of the shower or to the ceiling. The total cost of a tiling project also includes the grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps, and tile mounting materials like backer board.

How much does it cost to install tiles in a kitchen?

One of the most common kitchen upgrades is installing decorative backsplash tiles in the space between the counters and cabinets. It’s a chance for homeowners to get creative while also protecting the kitchen walls from splashes and stains. Like all tiling projects, kitchen tile project costs depend on the tiles you choose, installation materials such as grout and mortar, and any surface materials, like replacement backer board. The national average for a tiled kitchen backsplash is $490-$750. In general, pricing averages $10-$40 per square foot for installation, not including tile. Some professional tile installers have a minimum day rate for small projects, which averages $350.
