Ruben was absolutely amazing from start to finish. He was so knowledgeable, professional, on time and honestly the nicest man I have ever met. We hired him to install 3 new garage doors and after getting quotes from different companies he was not only within our budget but also includes warranties and just his knowledge alone stands out from all the rest. I am definitely going to not only recommend him to everyone we know but also use him for any garage door needs in the future. 10+ stars for sure!!!

River was very professional and arrived at the time we set. I hired them to repair some plaster that had water damage along side the bathtub. He analyzed the area and found that the bathtub seal was deteriorated so water was leaking into the walls. He fixed the leak which we wouldn’t have known about, applied a fast drying plaster, and painted the area with some left over paint we had in the garage. Basically he did more than I initially thought I needed in less time than we had planned. Very reasonable pricing and quality work. I would hire them again.

Member Comments: I used Mike to do two jobs, one was to install laminate flooring in my living room, dining room, kitchen, hallway and the other was to install carpet in my two bedrooms. Also he did the casing around all the doors and installed base board.I compared several people and not only did Mike have the best price, but he also was willing to work with me as we had a budget, He was punctual, professional, and efficient. I love my floors and people always compliment them when they visit. I was referred by my friend, and have referred him to my many family members, who have all been extremely satisfied. I definitely back to Mike when considering doing our counter tops.

Found Vincent on Thumbtack and couldn't be happier with his work. Received several quotes for the work and Vincent was by far the cheapest. I decided to have him repaint my garage door and front door yesterday and I've already received compliments about how good of job he has done. He also advised me through the process of which paint to purchase and provided guidance on items inside the house. Quality work, great customer service. Would highly recommend!

Well first of all he was on time!! I needed to change a metal door our of my garage, the door was rotted out and was falling a part. So he had to replace the door and the door jam. He did it really fast and was really professional about everything. And the best thing was that he gave me a really good price!! 👍

ABSOLUTELY the BEST !!!!!!! Painted 15 years ago, age had not been kind to the weathered wood and peeling tex-cote paint on the exterior of my house. I obtained six bids for contractors to paint it again. I was impressed with Richard right from the start. He was very knowledgeable, so I hired him to pain one of my houses in Winnetka, CA. There are so many good things to say about Richard and his team. Where do I start? He seeks perfection. We are talking straight lines, clean lines, and the best material possible. His price includes Dunn-Edward or Sherwin William paint. You have 1,000+ color options to choose from. Because my house is frequently beaten by the 100+ degrees San Fernando Valley sun, I opted to upgrade to Life Paint's Cool life product for a lifetime warranty. The paint keeps my house cooler. It is thick, like yogurt - we are talking amazing quality. Their preparation to the house was perfection. They dug ditches around the entire perimeter, repaired a million cracks, sandblasted the exterior, sanded the windows, and replaced broken window panes (I don't need to replace them anymore!), and even cleaned up my neighbor's yard after the sandblasting job. Richard is not just a painter, he knows how to fix anything that is wrong with the exterior construction of your house, especially if it could negatively impact the painting results. He replaced multiple rotten wood beams on my back patio, the wood flashing on my side exterior door, removed the 1950's wood beams on my front porch, repaired window sill gaps, and replaced the entire wood siding on the side of my garage. He showed me where the previous painters even used Bondo to repair the rotten wood, rather than replace it. His price included the replacement of up to 20 feet of bad wood. He charged extra for the overage, at a very fair price. Truthfully, I was just happy that he knew how to repair everything and I didn't have to hire someone else. He is an absolute professional and extremely customer friendly. His team works quietly, music is kept to a minimum, they pick up their own trash, and discard your trash from the job at the end of the day. Their work area remains clean. He is present every day, supervising the workers. If something needs to be done, he jumps right in and appears to know how to do every part of the job. Speaking of customer friendly, I changed my mind about the paint colors so many times. He even repainted areas of my house just to make me happy. He was never frustrated with me, which I appreciate. As they say, a picture says a thousand words. Take a peek at the before and after pictures. The color is amazing - I'll take credit for that! However, I couldn't do it without Richard. He is an amazing consultant. He helped me to select the color, giving consideration to shaded areas and direct sun. So, I loved Richard's work so much that I have hired him to paint the inside of my house! Listen, if you are looking for a quality paint job, you need to hire Richard. He is the best. He is also trustworthy, knowledgeable, patient, professional, and fair priced. I highly recommend him!!! RICHARD, THANK YOU FOR AN AMAZING NEW HOUSE!

Tom was amazing. I called Rampart Garage Doors in the morning because I have a broken spring on my garage door. Tom was able to schedule an appointment with me in the afternoon on the same day. He gave me a call a little early and explained that he could come earlier if it worked for me. While he was at my house he thoroughly checked out the whole garage door in addition to replacing the springs he showed me a couple of other protential problems. He didn't just tell me he showed me the way they looked explained what they did and gave me a very reasonable price to repair/replace. I opted to have additional items fixed. Even with the additional items the price was better than some quotes I received from other companies over the phone. I would use again.

I can't say enough amazing things about Horacio. I needed my doors repainted because the previous owner put latex over oil without prepping which meant it would peel and tear easily. I hired 3 different contractors prior and they all did a terrible job and took too long. Horacio is a pro and my lifesaver. After 3 weeks of going through this painter ordeal, Horacio completed the job professionally and on time. He's polite and professional. I will be hiring him again to paint my rental property.

We had an amazing experience working with Jay! He was able to get the work done in a timely manner, and did stellar work - we seriously have never worked with a more precise and tidy painter. We are so happy with how our gate and door turned out, and he did a great job installing molding on our exterior window and painting it. He is truly a great guy and we couldn't recommend him more!

Contacted George with a list of projects I had in mind, but needed a price to see how much I could get done and what the costs would be. George came over to give me a quote and a breakdown of costs of each project and payment schedule, which I appreciated. We went ahead with the work. One of the bigger projects we had George and his team do was to knock down our existing patio and concrete and put up a new one. Old patio was 15' x 20' we did a new 15' x 40' patio. Very happy with the quality of work and the patio itself. Other projects include removing bulkhead and putting up new drywall, installing can lights, new roof, and putting up new doors. I was most impressed by two things - 1) the open communication between us, and 2) the professionalism and politeness from George and his workers. Even little hiccups were properly communicated and worked out. I will definitely be working with them again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you fix a broken garage door?

Garage door problems don’t have to mean the end of the world. Garage door repair is typically a one-day process and can be done for only a few hundred dollars. Common garage door repair requests include fixing slow or erratic garage doors, addressing strange sounds coming from the garage door or motor, fixing cosmetic damage such as dents or scrapes, repairing broken doors that are stuck open or closed, and troubleshooting inoperable doors.

The two main garage door operating mechanisms are sectional roll-ups or tilt-ups. Garage door repair services can fix single-car, double-car or RV-height doors. Your garage door may be made of wood, steel, aluminum, masonite, vinyl, fiberglass or another material. The type of garage door repair you need really depends on the type of garage door you have and the issue at hand. Garage door repair pros often charge a flat service call fee to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate. For customers who choose to have the repair done, the service call fee may be applied to the first hour of labor (including time to make the diagnosis). If your garage door is under warranty, the repair may be free of charge.

Who repairs garage doors?

Garage door repair is a specialized job, which is typically handled by a garage door repair service. Professional garage door repair technicians can test or repair a garage door system and fix cosmetic blemishes on doors. Common requests include help with jammed or inoperable doors, slow or erratic doors, unusual sounds, dents or scrapes on the door, and general system testing. Garage door repair professionals can work on single-car, double-car and RV-size garage doors.

How do you choose a garage door?

When garage door repair isn’t an option — perhaps the current door is beyond fixing or you want to upgrade to a quieter, more energy-efficient model — it’s time to buy a new one. But choosing a garage door is not as simple as it sounds, even when you know the right size for your home. A wide range of materials, styles and finishes are available, and each factor influences the cost. Garage doors are made of aluminum, steel, vinyl, fiberglass, masonite, wood (typically cedar or mahogany), or a composite of several materials. They may be insulated against cold or heat. Traditional and modern styles include raised panel, carriage house or crossbuck. Most styles have window or arch options, and are available in different wood finishes and neutral colors. Because garage doors account for a large part of a home’s exterior, their appearance is usually a homeowner’s top priority. An attractive garage door can increase a home’s curb appeal and resale value.

How much does garage door repair cost?

When a garage door goes off the track, the spring breaks, the door is dented or the garage door opener is on the fritz, a professional garage door repair specialist can help. The cost to have a garage door fixed varies, but the national average cost of garage door repair is $70-$110. The extent of the damage and the size and material of the door will affect the final cost. A garage door repair company generally charges a national average of $80 for a service call, which includes the first hour of labor and service, such as testing and inspecting the garage door and opener. Apart from labor, the garage door repair costs hinge on buying replacements parts. For example, a new spring costs an average of $60. Expect to pay several hundred dollars, though, if the door is beyond repair; a new garage door ranges in price from $200 to $4,000, and most homeowners spend an average of $800-$1,200.

How much does it cost to install a new garage door opener?

Your new garage door opener cost will vary based on the model you purchase and how long installation takes. Typically, installation pros charge by the hour, although if the pro is also selling the garage door opener they may have a flat fee for the product with installation. The national average for new garage door opener costs (with installation) is between $390 and $650, although the national average cost for the opener purchased alone may be in the $150-$300 range. The three most common types of openers are chain-drive, screw-drive and belt-drive. The chain-drive costs the least but makes the most noise. The belt-drive is typically the quietest and the most expensive. You can expect to pay about the same amount for installation for any of the three styles. The lifespan of a garage door opener is approximately 10 years, depending on quality. A pro may provide opener repairs for the cost of their service call fee or they may charge a flat fee, such as $100 for opener repair. Here are some examples of new garage door opener average costs, including installation:

  • Contractor-grade garage door opener with installation: $300.
  • Chain-drive opener with installation and one remote: $350.
  • Belt-drive opener with installation and two remotes: $400
  • Top-of-the-line opener with ¾-horsepower battery backup, belt drive and nearly soundless operation: $475
    • The majority of higher-end garage door openers are “smart” products and will connect via app to your smartphone for remote access.
