TJ is amazing! He is courteous, professional and trustworthy. Most importantly, if he says the job will get done, he will do whatever it takes to get it done — no matter how time consuming and how difficult it is. (AND without overcharging!) He is a man of his word! We had some repairs that needed to be done in our kitchen and master bathroom. He ran into some unforeseen issues that took a lot longer than planned, but TJ handled it without a hitch! We had a leak under our kitchen sink and it damaged our cabinet. The before and after pictures should speak for themselves. We also had an issue in our master bath where our water always came out orange. He is the the first and only person that fixed it on the first try! He has absolutely no idea how happy I was that he fixed our problem! I have to say good, honest, hardworking people are very hard to come by and we were so lucky to have met him! 👍👍👍

We initially hired Mike to do our downstairs flooring; however, we were very pleased with his work so we also had him do a complete master bath and 2nd bath remodel. He is a hard worker and truly cares about doing a good job and making sure his customers are satisfied with the final product (which unfortunately isn't always the case with contractors). His prices are reasonable and we will definitely work with him again if we have any other projects. Thanks, Mike!!

This remodeling went very smooth and without any problem either from Eyal OR from the actual workers that worked at the house. The workers came over and each one did his own part. Eyal made sure that each stage will be complete without any mistake or problem. All the materials has been selected by us with Eyal and Eyal was able to get for us great prices. Eyal showed us at the end of the remodeling, each of the invoice so we will know how much went on the materials and how much on the labor. At the end of the remodeling, the bathroom is brand new with new paint, Bath tub and shower among the new floor, vanity and all the hardware around.

Maria does excellent work. She recently completed a entire gut and modern style bathroom remodel in our home. The remodel required wall to wall tile work, and it turned out beautiful. She has a good eye, and it is easy to communicate what you want done. She is also willing to offer suggestions you may not have thought of before, which has ended up adding a custom and elegant touch to our remodel. Maria has done work in our house before, and we keep asking her back to do more because we trust her, and she is very detail oriented. When we have people over to our house (including other contractors) they always comment on the quality of the work done by Maria. Everyone who meets her (including our neighbors) love to snatch her up to do work in their houses as well :-) We were very lucky to have found her. Once again, Maria exceeded our expectations.

Had so many bad experiences with so many contractors until I finally found ABC. Joe, the guy who manages the project, is truly a sweetheart! While the job was not all smooth sailing, and is not even over yet, he takes the hassle and the stress of home reno off of your shoulders and makes it instead a wonderful experience. Happy with the outcome thus far, and truly grateful to have found Joe! He is the best out there! Simply A+ for everything!

Rami was very responsive. Bath tub tiles had to be broken to take out the dead possum under my bathtub leaving a gaping hole. I needed the job done fast and well. Rami responded quickly to my request for help. He viewed the damage and gave a quote on the same day. He agreed to get the job done two days later on a Saturday. He got replacement tiles to match the current tiles in my bathroom. His guys did a great job and cleaned up after themselves. Rami is the guy to call if you need to get the job done.

I cannot say enough good things about Guy and his crew. Amazing job from start to finish. Guy took our small idea and turned it into a masterpiece! He was on time and on budget! Two things that I thought were unheard of when it comes to remodeling! Guy was patient and responsive and answered every question without judgement or delay. Construction Owl will most certainly be our first call when we begin our next home remodeling project.

This is by far the fastest and most efficient company I have ever worked with. And beyond the nicest and most helpful people I have ever worked with. I highly recommend them. Magen and Gil worked together each day to make sure everything was going according to the plans and Simon and his workers worked overtime many days to finish quicker. Magen and Gil were there every step of the way and Made sure all the work was done according to plan. Can’t be happier and just in love with my new kitchen and bathrooms. Go for it !

Alon and his skilled team of professionals made our dream remodeling of kitchen, master bathroom and laundry room. From our first appointment with Alon, continued to the demolition stage all the way to the completion of the work, the whole team and involved people of CentrePoint were experts, honest, highly motivated people and well organized. Any issue that was raised along the way… was addressed correctly and handled in a professional manner and we were always informed of the progress, deliveries and installations of our project. We must state that our remodeling project was also priced right and our price didn’t change during the remodeling. This was something very important for us and we are happy that it stayed that way. We felt like we were in great hands and we will definitely call on them again for any future projects.

I was ready for some remodeling in my home. My kitchen needed an update and so did a few of the bathrooms. Searching google I found GIM and saw that they did energy efficient remodeling and upgrades. I contacted GIM and set an appointment for a consultant to come by to show me some options. The consultant showed us many samples of flooring, tile, roofing, painting, and multiple other products they offered. They even had their own architect to take care of the drawings for me and also had a 3d design for the kitchen. All the work was done properly and my home was left clean everyday. Appreciate all the hard work.

I had the pleasure of working with Reza Nasr when I hired him through Thumbtack to produce a set of CAD construction documents for a bedroom/bath/deck. He is detailed, efficient, delivers on time and knows what is required to acquire an LADBS permit. He is easy and great to work and I would recommend him to anyone...a 5 star rating!

I highly recommend Jerry and his crew. First, their craftsmanship is definitely superior - it’s as good as you’re going to find. I hired Jerry to add an attic floor (for storage); completely renovate our garage (adding a toilet/shower); and to then transform our kitchen into my wifes vision. His work is exquisite, his team is friendly and professional, and it’s clear they all have a passion for what they are doing, and have been doing it through generations. We’re lucky enough to own a quaint 1920s craftsman that’s in great shape, so we wanted someone with plenty of experience working on these Pasadena/Altadena homes and that could match the craftsmanship. Jerry intimately knows this area, so he can work on anything. We wanted out open-format kitchen to match the look of the house, and it does so remarkably. Jerry’s great at working with your budget, being clear about costs and what they are going toward, and I always felt like his finished product exceeded my expectations. From caring for our house’s original work when we install our attic-floor, to finishing the deck and awning that’s now attached to our kitchen. You’ll be glad you get this crew!

Had such a positive experience working with Solid Builders in 2006 when we added a gorgeous master bathroom, that they were the first people I consulted when I decided to do a major renovation of literally every room in my house in 2017. I trusted Brad and his crew to be respectful of my property and privacy, and to take special care of my cats who are not allowed outside. One of the things I like the best about this company is that the price they quote you is the ACTUAL price of the work. They do not try to "upsell" you. They will communicate honestly with you, including advising you when you are about to spend money unnecessarily. Brad actually SAVED me money! Another thing I really appreciated about everyone in this company is that when tell you a specific day and time they plan to work, they SHOW UP at that time with the materials they need (unheard of!) There isn't a lot of "down time," or gaps in the schedule. Lastly (and I could go on), these guys are very focused on client satisfaction. They do not settle for sub par work.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

    • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
    • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
    • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
    • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
    • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

For more on how long a bathroom remodel should take check out The Complete Thumbtack Bathroom Remodel Guide.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

    • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
    • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
      • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
    • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
    • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
    • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
