The work was excellent: all was done quickly and satisfactorily. We had a confusing issue with closing out the bill, however: we didn't discuss parking in our downtown office building beforehand - so we weren't upset - but there was some confusion about it afterwards; the three parties (us, the handyman, and the company) were all confused about how the handyman was billing the parking to us and how we might reverse the billing after we provided partial parking validation. Ultimately, it was all good.

We had the very best experience - I can't begin to tell you how nice our sofa's and lounge chair came out. Tony even made an extra cover to cover the lounge chair as the dogs use it as a launching pad to gain access to our bed. The follow-up and response time was unbelievable - if Tony was in commercial real estate I would recruit him as quickly as I could. Tony is welcome to give me as a reference. We hope to use him in our new house.

I needed a lot of work as home had been neglected for several years. Jay came to estimate window installation, and I found he was knowledgeble in all areas of building, updating and code. I found him to be trustsworthy and he never pushed his ideas or asked for more funds than were originally agreed. He works clean and is very personable which helps when you have someone working in your home. I have recommended him to friends and family..their only complaint was they had run out of projects for him.

Mario Was on time and took care of several stucco patches on my house in Glendale Ca. His attention to detail was great and would recommend him to others. His pricing is very reasonable. Thanks Mario and I will call you again when we have another project. ED Luboff DSA Building Inspector for the State of California #3874.

Great designer! Easy to work with, listens to your ideas and more importantly, applies his expertise to what you want. When we met for a consultation on my project, Arash showed me just how good he is when he walked in and was able to rearrange my living room, making it 1000% better. He made it more inviting, creating an amazing flow, showing off the beauty of pieces that seemed to be hiding with my placement. My bedroom is the project, so I'm really excited about what he will be able to do for me with an empty room. Can't wait!!!!!!!

Tom and his team did an amazing job designing, building and installing an entertainment center in our house. We are novices on these types of projects so Tom’s advice and support were greatly appreciated. We gave him a few thoughts and he was able to translate that into a workable and visually appealing design. We are so pleased with the outcome! His responsiveness and follow through on the project made for an easy, seamless experience. He delivered well within the committed timeline. I highly recommend him!

The Egal Construction team was one of the most down-to-earth, honest contractors I've ever hired for a job in our office building. When we ran into an issue, they jumped on fixing it in an impossibly timely manner. Five stars, 10/10, all of the accolades I can give. Hire these guys!

We did a lot of research to find the right contractor to build us a free-standing recreation room. We actually hired a different contractor first, simply based on having the lowest price. What a terrible decision. We quickly came to regret it, and fired that contractor as soon as we could — a costly misjudgment. Even though Owl Construction’s cost was a bit more, though very reasonable, we knew he was the right contractor for us. Guy Hazan of Owl Construction is fantastic. He was so easy to work with. He’s a compassionate listener, and kept us informed and at ease through the entire process. I don’t know much about construction, and had never undergone a project of this size, but Guy was there every step of the way. He explained everything very clearly and addressed any questions or concerns we had from day one to the completion of the project. I also must mention the Amazing Anesta. Anesta is a gem to this company. She kept the communication light and easy, and got the job done. She is responsive, dependable, organized and kind. The final building is stunning. The contractors did such a great job all around. To think what a nightmare it would have been to have continued with that original contractor who bullied and didn’t listen. Owl Construction was absolutely fantastic. I highly recommend them to anyone.

Duarte Building and Construction was a true pleasure to work with. From the very start communication was great, my messages were returned timely, my appointments were set timely to my schedule and Tony came out to see what needed to be done. Tony was professional and knowledgeable, listened to what I needed (roof repair) and didn't try to upsell or get me to do work I didn't need like a new roof. Robert, the roofer was truly a pleasure, very friendly, and knowledgeable and when he says he works fast, he is right about that. I am already preparing a list of other jobs I want done, and Duarte will very likely be the company getting those jobs. I have already referred them to friends. Great company!

Jason helped me move a huge couch from the 2nd floor of my building. The couch wouldn’t fit in the stairwell or elevator, so Jason brought his rope and equipment to help swing it over the rail. Overall excellent, very responsive and dependable person to work with.

About

I am a third generation contractor, and I have been around all aspects of repairs, improvements, remodels, and renovations. As far back as I could remember, I was on a job helping old dad. I learned the "old school" way of business where a man's word and hand shake was as good as anything. I am the type who likes to get the problem fixed and usually, I break it down into a language the homeowner can understand. I have numerous return customers because I take my time and care about the outcome of even the smallest of jobs. What benefits my clients is my thorough understanding of multiple trades, which always saves money or grief or both in most cases. Nevertheless, I'm a family man, and my clients are food in my kids' mouth. So, when I see that a client wants a bid on something that could vary widely in price, I tend to want to schedule an appointment, so I can give the most accurate and fair price. This also gives the homeowner an opportunity to pick my brain for knowledge, which I like to share. I am a c-10 contractor for electrical work. I am a certified state general electrician, certified structural steel welder and A UTI graduate, so information and knowledge amazes me from every aspect.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

    Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
