Freddy and is team came in and did an amazing job installing all new drywall over and around my fireplace where we took down the mantle and surround. Now its ready for me to paint! It looks like a brand new wall. He and his team were very meticulous about their work and the results. They didn't leave until it was 10000% ready. I'll absolutely be working with Freddy and his team again. Amazing!! THANK YOU!!

My small updates project to a recently acquired property morphed into a complete overhaul - new flooring throughout, lighting fixture changes, paint, wall patching, etc. and SOS has been great from the beginning. He was immediately responsive to my initial inquiry, was ready to work from day one of the agreed start date and fair and mindful of pricing expense and has brought with him 2 friendly and polite workmen. We have not completed this project yet so I will update my review upon completion but so far the working experience is going well.

Eli was punctual, very professional and made sure the wall measurements were correct so the heavy mirror would not fall off the wall now or in the future. Eli also hung a picture in my bedroom that gives it a noticeable attraction. Thank you Eli, you made my day👍

When we purchased our house 6 months ago, one of our first tasks at the house was to remodel the master bathroom and bedroom. We wanted to replace the existing carpet with a new wood floor, new coat of paint, crown molding and in-wall storage cabinets and in the bathroom, we wanted to basically tear down everything and to rebuild it including the new shower, bathtub, paint, vanity with double sink, new tile all around and new heated floor. We met and interviewed quite a few home improvement contractors and Excel Construction was one of them and our interaction with Eyal placed them at the higher place above the other ones based on their price, design, skills and honesty. We loved the 3D design that he did for us which integrated the summery of all our meetings and it proved that he clearly understood my vision. After we hired Eyal, I can’t write here enough about his level of experience, his capabilities and his quick responsiveness to my calls or emails. The remodeling job took a little less than 4 weeks and all the working people including Eyal were always there, working and checking the work, supervising his team who were top notch and working efficiently. We still love the remodeling job that they did for us and we highly recommend Eyal, the working team and the office staff that were involved in this remodeling. For our next remodeling project, we will definitely call Eyal again. Thank you!!

Hired Scott for the first time to install my entry door and he did a really nice job. He was very professional and worked diligently to stay on budget. His detailed explanation of the process he was going to take made me feel confident in his ability. I plan to hire Scott again in the near future for a wall repair project.

I decided to find a professional to mount my tv because I found out there was a specific way to do it and you have to find the studs first. So I decided to find a professional because I didn’t want to break my tv or my wall. I’m really glad I did. They were professional in finding the studs which they needed special equipment for and measuring and hanging up my mount. And they also walked me through the process in what they were doing. Would definitely hire them again.

I have worked with many contractors on various home and office projects. This was my first time building out a retail store on a tight budget, with champagne taste. Brad & David turned out to be the ideal contractors for the job. These guys don’t just build what we agreed upon, they made me aware of all my choices beforehand and helped guide me to all the right design decisions. And even their crews of builders and painters were exceptional craftsmen. Brad & David brought my project in exactly on budget and before the deadlines. They are real pros and every question and request from me was promptly responded to. I will happily work with them again and feel lucky to have found them.

Pat quoted installation of our backsplash. He was on time and very professional. His quote was the lowest of three. We did not move forward with the project but if we did we would have definitely hired him. We will keep him in mind for our next project.

Using Thumbtack for the first time we were matched up with David almost immediately. Easily in contact to figure out details and set up an appointment, he was punctual and patient. We were unorganized on our end, he was ready to do numerous tasks: uninstall washer/dryer, install new washer/dryer, mount TVs on wall, set up speakers, TV, Xbox. The washer and dryer tasks were completed efficiently, the other electronics we not unpacked yet and we did not want to hold him up. He was friendly, capable and left his number to contact him for future help. Would recommend David for many types of jobs around the house!

I hired We Do Handyman Services to drill and install hooks into outdoor concrete walls in order to hang string lights. Jeff was very responsive leading up to the service and was very easy to coordinate with. He was competent, got the job done very quickly, and it looks great. I would highly recommend him.

We are very pleased with our home remodel done by JC Builders & Design! Joe and his team completed all new flooring, paint, light fixtures, baseboards, and installation of 5 ceiling fans. All finished work is of highest quality. JC Builders & Design responded quickly to all inquiries, and were very thorough. Work progressed steadily from day 1, and the whole project was completed on time. We even added a couple of items, and those were also completed on time. We love our "new" house and recommend JC Builder & Design to all of of our neighbors and friends.

Ron did a couple of jobs during the couple of hours he was at our house, the biggest of which was re-hanging a couple of huge shade sails in our backyard -- they were collapsing so they were unusable. He did a fabulous job rehanging them -- when I got them I had no idea that you needed a working knowledge of geometry to hang the things correctly. Turns out they are right angled elliptical triangles which is why they sag if they are not hung correctly. Who the heck knew! Well Ron did and he did a FAB job hanging them so now they are functional, taut, and nice to look at. After Ron fixed the shade sails he hung some metal artwork for me. In addition to not knowing what the heck an elliptical triangle is, I have no eye for how to place things, including a wonderful collection of metal frogs, butterflies, and suns I have been collecting over the years. Ron installed my artwork on a large brick wall and he placed them really, really nicely -- which I could never have done. But wait! There's more! Ron is very diplomatic with the whole "well, neither my husband or I are very handy" thing. As he was leaving I pointed out the slightly cockeyed address in the front of our house (which my husband had proudly installed) and I asked Ron if he could quickly and discreetly align it so . . . no feelings were hurt. Ron totally got the sticky diplomacy of the situation. I said to Ron "welcome to the family, you're now that family fixer" and I wasn't kidding.

My jobs with Robert / Custom Design Concepts are based on myself doing a part of the work with Robert performing the finish work on homes and commercial buildings over 80 - 100 years old. So here are my thoughts on his strong points. 1. Dealing with Robert is to deal with an artistic artist. End results are sometimes work of art and on those other times repair work which is of very good matched work. (tile, lath and plaster, stucco, restoration back to early 1900's, Some cement work. 2. On final issues of results on finish they have always been addressed to my satisfaction professionally. 3. Great work ethic and long hours with out additional cost to contract. 4. End results are very good to really outstanding work 5. Work ethic includes long working hours to meet dead lines and at times can be longer. 6. Of recent work in which a bathroom tile job required a vanity I was very much surprised to see him make one from white oak and was impressed of his wood working skills in cabinet making. Overall I view Custom Design Concepts work as a guaranteed start to finish with trust , honesty, integrity with value and warranty back up just a phone call away.

I have used Mitchell for two different home improvement jobs. Don't let his look fool you!! He's a big teddy bear! His work is far above the standards. First job was knocking down a wall between my kitchen and dining room. Since it was a loadbearing wall it needed a beam inside the ceiling, as well as finishing patch work, our second job for Mitchell was a new front door including the casing and hardware. Both jobs were done beautifully, quickly and very neatly... No mess! There were no hidden fees or forgotten tools necessary for the job. In the future, I plan to only use Mitchell and highly recommend him to anyone and everyone!!

I recently remodeled my kitchen which included taking out an existing wall and replacing it with a beam in order to create a more open layout. When I first had the idea, I was clueless as to where to begin. Josh from 1OAK came out and gave me an initial price on the plans. I ended up not only having them do my blueprint and engineering and submitting to the city for their approval, but eventually I hired them for the entire job. Im very glad that I did. Not once did I feel hesitant as to whether they were the right company. They showed up on time, were professional, constant customer service and contact from the office, as well as open to my ideas and preferences for colors and materials. They really helped me build my dream kitchen. Im planning on having them come back to remodel my master bathroom in a few months. Wonderful company. Highly recommend.

I hired Fernando to tape and mud the drywall of 1 bathroom. His guy, Pepe, did a great job. The walls are nearly perfectly smooth as I had asked for. I visited one of Fernando's other job sites to check out his work and it looked good. The price was high compared to the other quotes I received, but the quality of work was great. I am already talking to Fernando about doing my next project. I would hire him again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
