Rating: 10/10 I had requested 2 sofa's to be picked up and be taken to the dump! One sofa was a large sleeper "L" shaped sectional and the second sofa was a studio sized "L" shaped sectional. Mr. Loera was extremely professional and responded quickly even though I am a night owl and was corresponding late at night. He was able to fit me in-in his schedule and Not only did he arrive on time but he was even a little early. Mr. Loera was very polite and nonthreatening. Easy to approach and got right to work. He wasn't pushy or try to change the price we agreed upon last minute. I would definitely Mr. Loera & James R Loera Construction; to any single females that need help moving things or to anyone looking for a reputable and trustworthy professional. I will definitely be calling Mr. Loera for future projects!

Jeremy did an amazing job with building and installing 6x PAX wardrobes including all the shelves and drawers. He built them quickly, even though there was a power outage and the lights went out. He worked with flashlights to get the job done, and that is true dedication to client satisfaction. Before even installing the wardrobe he worked to remove the old shelving units and after the installation cleaned up after himself leaving our new closet clean and all the box and trash removed. I would easily recommend for anyone with an IKEA build to reach out to Jerome for construction and completion of there new furniture. We're looking to purchase units for our home office and will definitely be reaching out to Jerome for that work.

We hired Excel Construction (Eyal) to completely remodeling our kitchen and to design and build a large wet bar. The remodeling job that they did included the demolition of the existing spaces, the removal of several existing walls, rewiring of some electrical outlets and switches, re-plumbing the new spaces, remove and install new flooring, new upper and lower cabinets, install new marble countertops, installing new lighting fixtures, fresh interior paint, some drywall repairs and adding a new large island at the kitchen. Eyal and his working crew did a stunning remodeling job. Eyal create for us a complete design of the work based on what we wanted and needed, guided us through some space limitations of the house and presented to us some different ideas that met our needs. The remodeling job was delivered on time, within budget and with high quality. Eyal was at the house every day and made sure that the remodeling progress is on track. He was there for each and every step of the work, which was extremely important to us. We highly recommend them for anyone who is searching for high quality remodeling or construction work.

I originally used Haggerty Construction a few yer ago for improvements to my rental properties. The crews always showed up on time. And were always professional. They finished on or ahead of schedule and were always able to work within my budget. Because of this I decided to use them for a small but high end bathroom in my own home. My wife and I were very pleased with the outcome. Haggerty Construction is the only contractor I will use for all my Construction needs.

I have used Sean for the fourth time to do my outside lighting. I have been pleased with all the services he has done to my house. He has mounted Tv's for me, ceiling fans and recessed lighting as well and I am very pleased, everything works great. His work is immaculate and very, very reasonable in price! As usual, he has gone above and beyond my expectations with my lighting outside, my home looks BEAUTIFUL and I really love driving up to my house. What better way than to drive up to a beautiful home after a long hard day from work. The way he positioned the lights really accent my yard and home. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! He really does take pride in his work and offer suggestions to make it look nice and he's very honest, very knowledgable. I wanted to add more but his suggestion to accent only certain areas to make it stand out versus what I originally wanted which would have been an overkill to my house with too much light. I think most electricians would just install everything I asked just so that they can make more money without really caring how it would look like, but not Sean he is very honest and I really appreciate the fact that his concern was not about making more money off of me because he could have but that he was throwing ideas and suggestions to make my house look nice! I will forever use him and only him for my current and future services that I will need to get done and I will recommend him to all of my friends and family. Once you find a great technician for any service YOU HAVE TO HOLD ON TO THEM!!! Again I recommend him to all of you who reads this, tell him that Nadia Castro recommended him to you!

Daniel, Mario and the rest of the team at World Class Construction are honestly the best crew I’ve ever hired, and I’ve done quite a few remodeling projects over the last 20 years. They are extremely professional, courteous, fairly priced, and best of all – fast! My wife and I were very impressed by the speed at which our luxury bathroom remodel was completed, and trust me when I say this was no ordinary job…. everything was custom, and they stepped up to the challenge and delivered. Overall, we are 100% satisfied – so satisfied in fact, that we immediately hired them again to remodel our garage conversion project. Thank you World Class Construction!! (PS, a lot of companies ask you to write a review… we were not asked – our bathroom just looks that AWESOME ☺.)

Bradley of Inside Out Contractors is very knowledgeable and experienced with remodels. He produced well-designed, attractive, and high quality remodels of our flooring and bathrooms. This would be a 5-star rating if Bradley's responsiveness, communication, and punctuality were better. I think that if you obtain his assurance to provide top level performance in these three areas, you will be very pleased with selecting Inside Out Contractors for your remodel project.

J. Greg Carmichael has perform construction work for my family for 10 years. His workmanship is excellent, estimates are reliable, and pricing is reasonable. In 2013, at my Los Angeles home, Greg installed a new roof (2-story house), installed all new windows, 2 sliding doors, 2 exterior doors, completely remodeled my kitchen, installed wood flooring from the kitchen to family room, installed porcelain tile and copper plumbing in my service porch /laundry area. He recommended reuse of cabinets removed from my kitchen which increased my service porch storage area. Greg and his work crew are reliable and timely. His price estimates are accurate, and he completed my projects on schedule. Best of all, Greg is trustworthy and has great workmanship! I can't wait to remodel my yard and outdoor living space. I highly recommend J. Greg Carmichael Maintenance & Construction company.

My parents got a floor remodel 3 years ago. About 6 months ago they noticed a crack going across their new tile floor across their whole dining room area. Their initial contractor hadn’t done the floor correctly! JP and his team were very professional. They got the floor fixed quickly and it looks amazing! They are also very trustworthy; my parents were able to go on a weekend vacation and come back to their floor looking like new, no dust/mess to be cleaned up, and nothing out of place. We would definitely recommend them to our family and friends.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.
