WOW, Temi is amazing! She is the real deal right here on Thumbtack - who knew?! I highly recommend Temi for any aspiring writer to connect with and benefit from - a professional editor with a gift for lending clear, concise changes and suggestions to the work an author has agonized over! The work is tight, crisp, clean. Her professionalism is top-notch. Responsiveness and punctuality - excellent! The work was delivered before the deadline I asked for and Temi won't tell you she can do something by a certain date if she can't deliver. When I write the sequel to the work I just finished, I won't hesitate to go straight back to Temi for Round 2.

Lois is a wonderful tutor. As soon as she heard me talking she knew exactly what was it that I needed to train my English in order to take it to the next level. Highly recommendable to those who have an advanced level of English, because she is really precise and you get to learn a lot of history on the language. It is very enjoyable and it makes sense. If you need ESL, she's the one! She is also a writer, producer and acting coach, therefore she's also super creative and helpful when it comes to having to work out some text.

Chris was very attentive and informative. He was able to edit and provide me with powerful reasons why I should reword various sentences. I would recommend him wholeheartedly. His work was on time, worth the cost, and his experience in writing is helpful in guiding and supporting anyone new or old in the process. She is GREAT! She was completely available and responsive. I am a new writer and she helped keep me on task and even offered confidence building comments. Her work on my manuscript was excellent. She worked through a good deal of dialogue and narrative that was broken. We have created a comprehensive text. I am impressed and will continue to work with her going forward. I highly recommend her as an editor.

Cynthia is incredibly insightful, supportive and always professional. Throughout the time she coached me creatively she always stayed focused, reminding me every session what my goal is. She helped me take small steps every day to do the work spiritually, creatively and she also has an excellent grasp on the practical and the necessary small steps that make the big strides possible. When I'm not working with Cynthia I now have a structure and a routine to my day, and resources that she turned me onto to keep me going in the right direction. I referred another working writer to Cynthia and will continue to bring her clients because she has been an amazing resource and an invaluable inspiration to me.

I reached out to David for a memorial announcement and received a beautiful, tasteful, thoughtful design in less than a few hours. He really listened to me and was therefore able to provide me with exactly what I needed. His attention to detail, creativity, and talent make him a gem in the graphic design industry. And he goes beyond design. He is a talented writer and can cleverly communicate ideas, as well.

I worked with a resume writer who charged me 200USD for a professional resume. I have been a marketing and development consultant conducting business on an international level for over a decade. However I caught myself in between positions due to corporate downsizing. Upon receipt of this new resume written I shared it with J.Cole for his thoughts. I was having a hard time getting first interviews and responses from several submissions I'd made. Mr. Cole was very professional in his approach and within a day I had a new resume worth bragging about. I am currently working with him on my cover letter and other aspects of sourcing the right opportunity for my own personal development.

When working with a professional writer a business has to consider the writer's qualifications. Christopher from Ghost Strategies has a science background(Aeronautical Engineering), is an attorney and has written professionally for over 20 years. Because of this background he is very detailed oriented and is used to meeting deadlines. His science background means that he considers the substantive topic as well as good editing and writing practices in performing any project. He was an asset to my law firm and to my clients over a number of years.

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

    • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
    • Strong writing skills.
    • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
    • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
    • Expertise in your target area.
    • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

    • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
    • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.
