Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a tiler need to enter my home?

If the tiling job is located in your house, the tiler will need access to your home. The exception to this would be if the job was taking place in an outdoor area like a backyard.

If a tiler does need to enter your home, take strong precautions. Sanitize all surfaces, avoid being in the same room and conduct payment using digital platforms. Discuss a safety strategy with tilers in your area beforehand.

Can I use digital payments to pay for tile installation, replacement or repairs?

Digital payment platforms are popular in a wide range of service industries, and many tile installment, replacement and repair professionals now accept them. Common platforms include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more.

Start with an online search for tile companies near you. Ask them if they accept digital payments and which types you can use. Then, put a strategy together to follow social distancing guidelines.

Do tilers offer remote or virtual services?

Because tiling is a manual, in-person job, it is not typically considered a remote project. But if you come across a profile that states the tile company is offering remote services, ask them what those services include.

Can you tile over drywall?

Yes, it is possible to lay tile over drywall. If you’re looking to lay a tile backsplash in your kitchen, you can certainly do it yourself — but hiring a professional may save time.

Before you tile over your drywall, make sure the wall has a smooth surface with no bumps or cracks. Start by using a compound to seal up any crevices, then sand the drywall and clean up the dust. Then, lay a coat of primer on the drywall to get it ready for your tile.

How long does it take to lay tile?

Depending on the pro’s expertise, the size of the project and its complexity, the time it takes to lay the tile will vary. For some projects, it may take a few hours to lay tile while others will require several days of work.

When planning a tiling project for your home, get free estimates from the best tile contractors near you and ask them how long it would take them to complete your job.

Can you tile over tile floors?

Yes, you can lay tile over existing tile floors (or a backsplash). Although it’s generally best to pull up your old flooring, you can simply place tiles on top if your existing floor is in good condition.

Before you start, examine your tiles carefully for mold, cracks or unevenness. Provided none of these is an issue, you can begin laying your new tiles.

But if this is your first time laying tile — or if you want to ensure that the job is done right — save time by hiring a tiling professional near you

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

Was very responsive and went out of their way to correct a previous contractor's error so that the tile would lay properly.

I started my bathroom remodel about one year and a half ago with the vision of a curb-less shower and tiled walls. The sloped shower pan and the crooked walls were a clear indication that this tiling job is well beyond my skill set. I gave up on my honey do project and was fortunate enough to find Juan Infantas. He showed up on a Sunday afternoon to take a look and give us an estimate. The price seemed a tad high, but after consulting with a retired tiling business owner, it sounded well within the ball park going rate. Juan started the project the following Monday laying the barrier floor. By Friday everything was done with great care, thoughtful details (lining tiles up with the linear drain), keeping a clean site. The result was well beyond my wildest expectations, just perfect. The walls are flat and true, the layout better than I had envisioned and the piece of mind that there will be no leak, mold or any other issues forcing a do over. I will hire Juan Infantas for all future tiling jobs without any hesitation. If you have read this review, your search for the best tiling professional is over.

Osbaldo did a great job of installing ceramic porcelain tiles on my kitchen floor. All the work was done in a professional manner and completed on time and within the established price given. I purchased all the materials and Osbaldo helped me pick up the materials and the tile store. I would hire him again to do future work on my house.

Danny and his crew have been incredible to work with. They are fast, yet meticulous. I had them Install some large format tiles in my living room, dining room, and kitchen. Most contractors told me it would take them a month to do. Danny and his team got it done in under 2 weeks. The workmanship is perfect and they routinely inspect their own work to fix issues before they need to be pointed out. Danny will be my go to for tiles from now on.

If you are looking for a tile master, hire Ed NOW! This man is highly skilled at what he does!!! I'm pretty picky about who I allow into my house, and VERY critical of the work. (i'm pretty much a "type-a" personality.) Ed is a very skilled craftsman. great personality, and treats every job like its his personal home. Ed tiled a bathtub surround and floor in my guest bathroom. I couldn't be happier with the work he did. He has a pretty interesting background in tile and slab work which you should hear about. you cannot beat real world training...Ed has it. I trust this man 100%, and he knows he will be back to help design and install my master bath. I assure you, he is worth every penny.

Tony and his guys were great. On time, always cautious of our home and areas surrounding work. Got the work done quickly and looks great. Used them for a tile floor replace after a bathroom leak. Very friendly and easy to work with, I would recommend them for your next project.

They did an incredible job! We are SO pleased with the work they did! They were quick, efficient, helpful, punctual, respectful and hardworking! They made our dream bathroom come to life! You’d be crazy to go with anyone but them! Extremely detailed oriented! We could go on and on! If you’re looking for a tile installer, Tony and Arturo are the guys for you! Thank you, again, so much! We are so happy with how everything turned out!

These guys were outstanding. Easy to do business with. The owner quoted everything from pictures and scheduled via email and text messages. His crew showed up on time and were very professional and polite. Workmanship was excellent, and they cleaned up everything upon completion. Both technicians wore masks and worked very quickly. It was only a 35 square foot lower bathroom tile job, but they treated me like it was the biggest job of the week. I highly recommend these guys for anytime job you may need done. A++

What can i say? Amazing work, on time, well done, respectful and highly accommodating. I calculated the total work space wrong (only half of the actual space) but he was nice enough to keep the same price to help me out. God bless him! He worked non stop from 8am to 9am; except lunch of course. Lots of cutting due to my type of tiles, but he never complained. I also hired his brothers to do 6 of my doors. Again, excellent and high quality work. 5 stars across the board. Highly recommended! I hope your business blooms well brother!
