I had a previous bad experience with a plumber, and decided to find a more scrupulous person to fix the half-done job. I decided to try out thumbtack, and posted a brief description of the work. Joel was the first of 5 plumbers to reply within the hour. Joel showed up the morning of the job with another employee and reviewed my plumbing issue in detail before going into the crawl space with his associate to double check the situation. He came back out, described the problem, offered short and long term solutions, and we agreed on which route to take. He assigned the work to his employee, and the work was completed in a couple hours. Although he was not the cheapest of those plumbers who replied, I did feel that Joel provided a reasonable price for the work, had great communication, and his employee also had all the necessary parts for the job in his van (eliminating the need to run down to Home Depot or Lowes for parts). Joel's employee was hard-working and he also provided me with before and after photos of the work completed. I am inclined to seek him out again for future home improvement projects (bathroom remodel, roofing).

We wound up choosing Cheap Tile and stone. We found them to be professional and efficient. The job was beautifully done. Marc the owner and Michael his helper are extremely hard working and kept to my timeline. They actually accepted my job even though some of the other contractors I spoke with didn't want to bother for such a small space and profit. We will definitely be using Cheap tile and stone for our upcoming downstairs and kitchen remodel. I found them to do high quality work with an accomodating price tag.

Mike is absolutely fantastic. We hired him to install floors and baseboards and he did a beautiful job. He has such patience and attention to detail that we continued to use him for everything around our old house .. install water heater, dishwasher, change door knobs, fix leaky pipe in laundry room, install new fixtures and fans, etc. So far in our new house, he's built us an outside catio, put in 1940s fixtures, fix 1940s doors, french drains, and the list will continue on! We trust him completely and we love that he is a nerd in what he does. Pictures soon.

We recently had RGB Construction tile our kitchen, laundry room & downstairs bathroom. They also installed vinyl floors in part of our master bathroom and guest bathroom. Not only did they do a great job with the install but they were very clean and left the place neat and tidy especially after they removed the existing flooring and everything was completed in a timely manner. The best part though was that they were able to tackle the plumbing themselves so we did not have to hire someone else to remove & reset the toilets. In fact they installed our new dishwasher for us in place of the old one that we replaced! Would highly recommend them to anyone looking to remodel.

I just bought a 1940's house with an unfinished basement. I really wanted to transform the space into a guest bedroom with a connected laundry room. My friend recommended Bright Builders. When I called them, I was able to schedule an appointment for the next day. Michael showed up on time, was very knowledgeable, and was able to answer all of my questions. He gave me a written bid with all the details broken down to different trades so that I understood the scope of work. He was also very clear with me about the timeline and what to expect. Once we started work, Michael was coming to the house almost every day. Half way through the project, he had an idea for how to better use the space but it required a little bit more money. He didn’t do anything until I agreed. Ultimately, I’m very glad I took his advice because it made the room more open and spacious.

We hired W&W builders group to do nearly all house renovation - open up and completely remodel the kitchen, create a master suite, remodel our second bathroom, change hardwood flooring and do interior paint. All team was very professional, knowledgable and always available to answer any questions or solve any issues. In approximately 10 weeks, they transformed the house into a modern masterpiece. Perhaps the best attribute of w&w is that they take pride in their work and want to do the job right. We had new flooring installed in the master bedroom, which did not match the other floors, so they refinished all the floors they all look the same. Our project manager Gil sat down with us and went through the whole contract, line by line. In terms of prices, they are not inexpensive, (also not expensive) but what we got was a top-of-the-line job from experts using quality materials. They were able to anticipate any issues and fix them right away. The price on the contract was the price we paid, no surprises. I highly recommend W&W Builders group and would use them again if we needed another home remodel

Mr. Hatfield refinished our deck. There were structural concerns and some termite damage as well as the need for sanding and staining. Mr. Hatfield did a beautiful job with both the structure and finishing. His work ethic is outstanding, working diligently and steadily to completion. His estimate of costs was detailed and his rates were fair. We highly recommend Mr. Hatfield and look forward to working with him on other projects.

When you here the expression "Jack of all Trades" that is exactly what Jack is. Over the last year he has done countless jobs for us on our "fixer upper" home: Installed amazing walnut hardwood floors, rebuilt our staircase, refinished every wall and trim with smooth wall finish and new paint, installed a tankless water heater, new washer and dryer, added canned lighting to ceilings in multiple rooms, built custom barn doors and solid wood cabinets, kitchen and entire bathroom remodels, and located and fixed all electrical problems. Jack completed much more and honestly it's too many jobs to list! He always offered my wife and I options which really helped as all the choices in home renovation can become very overwhelming. The best part was that Jack always found us the best price which saved us countless $$$. Every day you will hear my wife and I say "I love this house!" and we thank Jack and his team for making our home a dream home! Mike Del Rey, Los Angeles

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

        What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

        What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

        • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
        • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
        • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
        • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
