  • Bass & Guitar Lessons

    (11 reviews)

You can study electric and/or upright bass with a Berklee College of Music graduate! All levels, styles and ages are welcome! I offer affordable pricing, a flexible schedule, and multiple-lesson discounts. I have a degree in bass performance from Berklee College of Music, and I have studied with some amazing teachers, including Lincoln Goines, Bruce Gertz, Oscar Stagnaro, Ed Tomassi, Dave Clark, John Funkhouser, Jim Stinnett and a one-week intensive study with Brazilian visiting-artist Filo Machado, among others. I have played professionally for 15 years in most styles and settings, and I have taught both privately and for an excellent public school outside Boston as their primary upright and electric bass teacher. I have also been playing guitar for over 20 years and available to teach this as well. I teach out of a nice, comfortable and private studio in the Mid-Wilshire area. I like to setup a 30-minute consultation for new students, where we can get to know each other and I can find out what your goals are on the bass and with music in general. Over the years I have developed the ability to tailor a lesson plan that fits your needs/tastes and maximizes the time you have to dedicate to practicing. I have have very broad tastes in music and therefore play most styles. I can teach you anything from walking jazz bass lines and improvisation, to slap technique (a la Larry Graham & Marcus Miller) or finger funk (Paul Jackson & Jaco Pastorius), to classic grooving R&B bass lines like James Jamerson, or even rock/pop influenced grooves of yesterday and today...whatever it is you would like to learn, I can help you progress in your playing in numerous ways (see list below for a list of possibilities). For you song-oriented bass players, I have spent a lot of time learning how to create/develop the perfect part for the song while also developing a nice, warm/round tone that compliments it as well as the ability to quickly dial in any tone the song/artist calls for...many times honing down the perfect part can be very tricky and requires a lot of previous experience...however I can show you many techniques for doing this, and put you on the right path to creating your own great bass lines! Some potential topics we can cover, but not limited to, include the following: - Time feel - Groove (finger style, slapping, locking with drums/rhythm section, usage of space, etc.) - Technique (left-hand fretting, right-hand striking, coordination, speed, dexterity, endurance, etc.) - Music theory - Harmony - Scales, arpeggios, pentatonics (including all inversions) - Using chords (including inversions) - Ear training - Bass line transcription - Reading music, charts, and lead sheets - Walking bass lines - Blues - Modes - Developing effective practice routine - Genre, style, and player analysis (any) - Developing creative bass lines - Rhythmic development - Intervalic recognition - Phrasing - Improvisation - Soloing - Dynamics - Harmonic analysis of song or jazz head - Secondary dominant scales - Composition - Music production/recording in a full-production studio in Hollywood - Setting up your bass and rig - Performance tips (getting past that nervous bug) - Recording studio tips (nailing that first take; getting a great bass recording sound) - Helping develop "your sound" I look forward to hearing from you! In the meantime...keep it low and keep it groovin'! :) Mike

I just finished a year-long tour as Norah Jones' guitarist and have also toured with Ben Kweller (RCA), HYMNS (guitar), The Candles (bass), The Redwalls (Capitol), +/-, Tracy Bonham (Grammy nominated), Daniel Johnston, The Pierces, etc. I've also played with Bob Weir and Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead as well as Mike Gordon and Jon Fishman from Phish. • Guitar Lessons

With each individual student, I offer exercises, songs and techniques to practice that will help you to immediately begin seeing positive results. I believe that anyone can play the guitar well and take their next step in music. It makes a big difference if you have the right teacher to help you learn the music you love. Most people who have attained proficiency on their instrument had someone who took the time to guide them along their way. Much of what is thought of as difficult to play or understand in music is only mysterious until it is explained and practiced intelligently. Learning an instrument in a music recording studio environment has many advantages and is a lot more fun, creative and rewarding. From your teacher jumping on drums or bass for you to develop your independence and timing as a player and recording prepared projects you've been working on, to playing at a higher volume to get to know your gear's real sound, the rocking memories you'll walk away with will fuel your inspiration to practice and improve fast. My focus is to help you achieve your goals on your instrument. Learn to play the music you love! Lessons are often followed up with custom-made instructional videos. Lessons are held at SAS Studios in Los Angeles. I offer a reduced rate trial lesson and multiple lesson package pay plans. For more information, please call or email me.
