My 2 lovable but unmanageable dogs were driving me crazy. I realized that they were causing me a lot of stress. I was yelling at them all the time to stop barking and to stop jumping on people. They wouldn't come to me or listen to me. I have had dogs my whole adult life and have been able to train them with basic obedience training....but not these two! My neighbor texted me all the time about their barking. Because I had a bad fall a few years ago while walking them. On walks I have had a hard time controlling the aggression of my male dog toward other dogs, As a result, I rarely walked them. I was at the end of my rope! I started searching for dog trainers in my area and found several good choices on Thumbtack. After reading the reviews I was most impressed with with what I read about Happy Paws Dog Training. The reviews almost sounded too good to be true. Most said that their dogs were transformed in one session. After speaking with Raquel I was convinced that she was the trainer I needed. I Iiked the idea of basically one intense training session. My training session was a week and a half ago. Today, thanks to Raquel, I can walk my dogs on a leash without them pulling, I am able to stop their barking, which has become almost non-existent. They listen to me now and I have great tools and techniques to use to control a variety of their bad behaviors. Raquel teaches you about the way dogs think and to understand their body language so you can stop unwanted behavior before it starts. She also teaches you....who you have to be to command the respect from your dog. Not only have my dogs behaviors changed, but I changed as well. I leared how to interact with them and speak to them in a more powerful way. The bottom line is you have to be consistent and committed to the training. Both you and your dogs benefit. The things I learned from Raquel have made the training so much easier to mainntain. It's only a week and a half and I am amazed every day about how much my dogs have progressed. My life is much less stressful? Raquel is one of those rare indivuals who has a special gift and insight into animals. She is Magical! I would highly recommend her and have already told all my friends with dogs about how fantastic she is. The proof is in the transformation of my formerly unruly dogs! I am so grateful to Raquel for her help and guidance. She is the best!

Karen is an amazing trainer. After just 1 session, the behavior of my 4 dogs changed for the better. It is amazing how quickly they learned. She does work in a way that dogs understand, but it might seem counter-intuitive to humans. She talks about how your dog can read your mind. Don't worry, she knows what she is doing because the dogs respond to her energy immediately. I have used many dog trainers: I felt her prices were affordable, and she was able to accomplish my dog goals quickly. Highly Recommend!

John is one of the best dog trainers that I've met. I have a three year old recently adopted American Eskimo with issues such as leash pulling, nipping people who doesn't give him attention, and general insecurity issues. I have seen other dog trainers trying to get help, but without result. John took the time to get to know my dog and evaluate him based on what he saw and previous conversations with me. He helped me understand my dog and what I need to do to help him. Apparently, I have a dog that thinks he's an alpha and he taught me how to address this. I need more classes to address my dogs leash pulling and more, and I am glad that John didn't try to address all issues in one session because I don't think that would have been very helpful in the long run. Training a dog is not done in an hour, it takes more time than that. I highly recommend John.

Denise was able to show me how to get my Old English Sheepdog to respond to basic commands, walk in a calm manner, and behave while in the house. Her private training of Sally and myself led to these things being accomplished in rapid manner. Sally turned from being an excitable, out-of- control dog into a peaceful, obedient pet. I highly recommend Denise as being an expert human and dog trainer.

Duane is a superb dog whisperer!!! I have worked with other dog trainers before but I have never met someone like Duane. It seems he has an incredible sensibility and ability to read each dog and know how to communicate with them. I just got my Stella, 5 year old English Bulldog, returned home after 5 weeks of board and training by Duane. Stella was very aggressive with other dogs and small children. She had virtually no obedience training whatsoever and never socialized with other dogs. I always had to warn approaching strangers, especially if they had a dog, that Stella was "not so friendly". Then a 8 week old chocolate Lab puppy came into our life and turned our home life upside down. Stella was very jealous and aggressive towards the puppy. My poor puppy was scared to death and something had to be done. Duane took Stella and trained her in his home for four weeks and the fifth week, I sent Henry to Duane for a week to be with Stella so that they could get acquainted and may be bonded. Frankly, I wasn't too sure whether Stella could change. I had a back up plan for the puppy in case the board and training with Duane did not work out. I am so happy that Stella and Henry are back home and they get along so beautifully, thanks to Duane!! It is so wonderful to have two dogs in the house without any tension. Duane is very professional, honest and very easy to work with. He answered all my questions, my numerous phone calls were never ignored, and I felt at ease about the whole process. It is clear to me that Duane loves and cares deeply about the dogs he trains and dogs love him back. Duane followed up with the second visit to our home today, and both Stella and Henry were so happy to see him. Stella actually wanted to follow Duane out as if she wanted to go with him. I have never seen Stella act like this with anyone outside her own family. We are so pleased and happy that we found Duane and can not recommend him highly enough. He is the real Dog Whisperer! Thank you, thank you, thank you, Duane!!!

Melissa is an EXCELLENT dog trainer! We have two small dogs who were pulling on leashes, had leash aggression, and who barked quite often. All of those things are past tense now. Her methods are gentle but effective, and more advanced than the "click and treat" that at a certain point stops working (especially with the barking). We are so grateful that we hired her and have already recommended her to some of our friends. Her pricing was also excellent! Hire her, your home will be much more peaceful!

Steve is an incredible, elite master trainer. He holds the key to unlocking all of your dogs' best attributes. He has done wonders for my dogs, and I have witnessed him doing even more for others. There's nothing that this man can't fix about your dog. But, you must be willing to put in the time and do what it takes to maintain. I have two mixed breeds (brother and sister) that have severe separation anxiety, when they weren't near each other. They were completely co dependent on each other, fearful and extremely sensitive to everything around them. They would whine and bark when separated. Steve had them for less than two weeks, and now they have no problem, at all being separated. He taught me how to build their confidence, and help them succeed. Which has made training them in obedience much easier. They now have the will to work, and the desire to learn more. As do I. He has inspired me so much that it has now become my passion, and I am now his apprentice. What I love most about the way that he trains, is that he is very gentle and patient with the dogs. He is by far more concerned with the dogs' well-being than anything else. He can be pretty tough on the owners, but once you come to realize why, you really can't be mad at him. The issues that your dog has, are typically there because of you. Your dog is a mirror of yourself. Once you've accepted that, you can then both change together, building the bond between you and your dog even stronger. But, you must be part of the change in order for it to work. Wendy is my senior master trainer, and I have learned so much already from both of them. They have taught me beginner and advanced obedience, behavior work, tracking, scent detection, how to show in AKC competitions, how to train movie dogs, and much more. Through the skills that I have acquired from them, I am now teaching my own classes and training dogs daily, using the same incredible methods that these amazing dog trainers have taught me. I highly recommend Steve and Wendy, and all of their trainers to anyone who truly cares for their dog.

Highly recommend! Theresa and Brad are basically Cesar Milan. In 15 minutes, they solved a problem we had been dealing with for over a year! Our 3-year-old, 50 lb greyhound/beagle/boxer mix was terrified of skateboards and would lunge and bark uncontrollably when she saw one. Within 15 minutes of getting to the Venice Beach Skatepark with Theresa and Brad, our pup was surrounded by skateboards and not making a peep! We can't thank them enough

Forever Friends Golden Retriever Rescue has been privileged to have Kim (The Trained Canine) as our Behavior Specialist and Trainer for the past 7 years. She not only trains our dogs but works with the foster parents and new owners. Kim has worked with dogs with simple issues that only need general obedience training and she has worked with dogs with extremely serious problems such as aggression. Our volunteers and adopters call Kim, "The Miracle Worker". Dog after dog that would have been considered "unadoptable" have been able to find their forever homes thanks to Kim's training. As President of the rescue, I sincerely thank Kim and highly recommend her services to anyone that needs a dog trainer.

I had a consultation with Dave. My fur babies took to him as soon as he walked in. He was very calm and professional and very honest. He didn’t come in with a pitch of why he would be the best trainer, we just had a conversation and it felt very natural and comfortable. After hearing my concerns, he told me what he thought the problem was and how we can try to fix it. I am confident that he is the best trainer for my dogs and I will start training with him very soon.

If you are looking for a reliable, professional dog trainer that gets you results, Ayumi is hands down the best in the business. Our little fur monster, Rollie, had social behavior issues when we first adopted him. After being recommended by a friend, we decided to put Rollie through Ayumi's program. I really wished I would've found Ayumi earlier. We discovered a whole new side of Rollie we had never seen before. The transformation is truly incredible. Thank you, Ayumi!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
