Ely came and did a few handyman jobs for us. He was quick in diagnosing problems. He fixed our door, diagnosed problem with our window, installed a peep hole, installed two locks, and several towel rods, all in 2 hours. The best handyman we've had so far.

Tom is great. Very happy I found him. I did work on our bathroom renovation, including: vanity install (very tricky IKEA cabinet that other handymen couldn't handle), plumbing, electrical, patching & paint, window install, and stucco repair. I immediately extended him to do some work on our front and back doors. All great. And now, I've hired him again to build a fence and gate for us in the front yard. I will be calling him again in the future, and I encourage anyone reading this to do the same!

Jovani responded promptly to my Thumbtack request for quotes - in fact he's the only person who contacted me. I felt his price was reasonable, and the installation of the new window went quickly and smoothly. Will definitely keep his number and recommend him to others!

Mr Mayroga is the ultimate professional. He knows his trade, he charges a VERY REASONABLE. price for his services. I really appreciate that he listened to me, my explanation of having a terrible toilet placed by DWP. He gave me his priced and explained why the toilet jammed. The other plumber didn't listen and still warned that he would first have to access the situation at $180.00 starting price. Thank goodness for honest tradesmen like Platinum Plumbing. I'm already less stressed, and fully assured by Mr Mayorga that the situation will be handled and corrected. I'll even have him speak to my landlords about the dreadful toilets DWP are installing in people's home in the guise of saving water.

I hired Tim to install exterior window shutters after my original shutters were damaged in the rain. Tim was quick to respond to all messages and the project was scheduled that same week. Tim showed up at the scheduled time and completed the project in a timely manner. My new window shutters turned out great and I would hire Tim in the future for my handyman projects.

Bruce did an excellent job installing an upstairs window air conditioner and even was able to install in preferred location which we thought impossible. He also identified a safety hazard that we did not know about and fixed it. He really knows what he’s doing and his prices are extremely reasonable.

American Castles Mike To the RESCUE!!! The water heater at my rental property burst on a Friday afternoon causing some major damage to the house. The renters were furious because their items got damaged and the house wasn't inhabitable after that. On the inside, the bathroom wall and under stairway closet were all soaking wet and drywall/carpet/padding had to be removed immediately to prevent mole build up. On the garage side where the water heater located, the entire wall was destroyed. so I called my home insurance who provided me with their preferred plumber who quoted an additional $540 out of pocket on top of what the insurance was going to cover just so he can bring up the water heater installation to code! He told me that it will take him 1+ week to order the water heater (duh...get one from Home Depot take only 1hr...which is what Mike did) and that he can install a temporary water heater and will charge $137/wk! He also referred me to a water damage restoration company which I was not too happy with either. Since it was an emergency and I went with that company. They came in and ripped out all the wet drywall without caring for any molding; especially for garage doors and closet doors! It seemed like what ever the water heater didn't damage, they did. They also broke my water heater intake shut off valve. damage the water heater over flow copper pipe. All I can say is I will not use them again! Back to the plumber, something was smelling fishy about his quote and so I called and questioned this plumber. His response was "Well, I will need to flush out the gas line and calibrate your water pressure...upgrade to the new California safety quote...put in earthquake straps...install new vent line since the new water heater nowaday don't use the old vent line!". I was not convinces so I started to Google for good local contractor and AMERICAN CASTLES (Mike Tay is the owner) came up from Thumtack along with few others from other websites. I contacted them and they came in and provided me quotes. Mike was the last one I contacted. He arrived within 30min. He checked out the damages and explained to me what needs to get done sequentially to get everything back in proper operation for my tenants. Mike is very knowledgeable and very patient in explaining things. I told him what the plumber had said, he laughed and told me the whole thing was a rip off and a scam! Another crock of bull**** and advised me against it. He told me to call my insurance company to inquire about using other plumber. Sure enough I was offered the "cash out" option which I didn't even know was available. I took that option and went with Mike for the repair. Mike knows how important it is for my tenants to get the hot water running again once the water damage restoration company completed the clean up/dry out the area (took 1 week). As soon as that company removed their equipment, Mike had his crew come in the next day (Saturday) to repair the garage dry wall and finished the installation of the new water heater and brought it up to code on safety on Sunday! He even added the water pan and installed drain pipe for me. I didn't even know such a thing exists (talk about quality...he treats it like repairing his own home!). The best part is his charge for the whole job including new water heater, earthquake straps, valve, drain pan, vent and new connection is far way less than what that plumber was going to charge me. I loved the fact he took the time to show me how things should be done up to code and what works for my situation instead of just giving a price and walking away. He did an awesome job! Unfortunately my landlord insurance's deductible was so high, I asked Mike to give me a quote for fixing the damage in the garage and inside the house. Mike's quote was very competitive and the best part is he is always willing to work with me knowing my situation (thx Mike). My bathroom paint is 16 years old so it was a challenge to match the paint for the new wall. After only quoting me for painting a small wall inside the bathroom, Mike decided on his own to paint the entire bathroom without charging for it. Now that what I call TAKING PRIDE IN YOUR WORK AND STICKING TO YOUR WORD!!! My summary is, Mike successfully completed the entire job and installation in four days. I would highly recommend Mike to anyone and will definitely be using and referring him to everyone I know.

I was very pleased to work with Dennis and Joe after having a bad experience with another contractor. They are professional, punctual and they clean up. Joe installed 2 patio doors and 2 windows for me. Initially there was an issue with the egress window on its size and placement. Dennis explained somethings to me and we were able to resolve the issue. So I'm thankful for his quick thinking and resolution. Overall their work is exceptional and I would definitely use them again.

I had him come to remove a ceiling fan and install a new ceiling fan and wall switch. Because did such a nice job, I had him remove and install two bath faucets one of which needed more repair than I thought. He also repaired my tub faucet which I knew needed lots of work. If I need anymore repairs, I will definitely call him.

Hector Pena did a great job at installing the windows. What I really liked though is how conscious he was about cleaning up after the installation. He was on time, professional, answered all my questions, and was fairly priced. I would recommend him.

"I was recently faced with the challenge of getting my old home ready for sale. Jim installed new sinks, installed new light fixtures, fixed leaks in the shower, and patched up holes in my walls caused by a faulty window covering installation. If you're faced with home improvement or repair tasks, and don't have the time or the ability to deal with it, I would give Jim Was Here my highest recommendation."

Full rip-out-and-replace kitchen remodel with custom cabinetry, counters, electrical, plumbing, appliances, external door/window replacements and opening up walls to adjoining rooms. Ephraim bid competitively compared to two other companies we contacted and when selected, he led a top-quality crew to complete a complex job in our home. Ephraim was adept at listening to our wants and needs and was able to take our design ideas and offer suggestions about how to execute with available materials including how much different options would cost. Good communication was always provided on paper with regard to cost changes and design plans. Our new kitchen is beautiful and gets constant compliments on the quality and design. We will definitely be calling Galvin Designer Builders for the next project!

I have a 3 bedroom home in Irivine that had old metal windows. I met with about 3 companies and chose to do business with window source. The product and the pricing seemed very fair and much better than what I had seen from some others like sears and renewal by andersen. the windows havent been installed yet but everything is on track. looking forward to it!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
