My son needed a tutor for his freshman year college English Composition class. Before hiring Carl, I had tried a couple of tutors, but didn't find them to be competent. Carl was a very pleasant surprise; he is both very knowledgeable and engages well with my son. I like the fact that he does't merely correct him and gives him answers, but makes him think and analyse the material. He is a rare find.

Lois is the most helpful teacher/mentor I have ever had the opportunity to work with. She is flexible about times and has helped me with many different writing and speaking projects. Lois has vast experience in many areas and knows how to make projects and learning enjoyable. She is willing to share her knowledge and insight. I am so glad that I hired her and will continue to go to her for all my speaking, writing, acting, film and academic needs. You will get custom help for a reasonable price- she is an amazing tutor. This past summer, I was in search of a tutor to assist my brother with his preparation for the ACT. A number of conversations with local tutors proved fruitless, as they were either too expensive or had rigid schedules. After doing some research online, I came across Joyee’s profile on Wyzant. I was particularly impressed by his extensive background in ACT tutoring having worked for some well-regarded test preparation companies. In addition, his rates were extremely fair. I enlisted Joyee’s tutoring services via skype, and my experience was remarkable. In spite of the three hour time difference between the east coast and west coast, Joyee remained a consummate professional with regard to his scheduling and punctuality. Most importantly, he is fully invested in his students, demonstrating patience and understanding whilst pushing them to achieve their full potential. Prior to working with Joyee, my brother had an initial diagnostic score of 27. After six weeks of tutoring with Joyee my brother scored a 35 on the September 2015 ACT. I highly recommend Joyee, his tutoring services are the perfect complement for any motivated high school student seeking help with test preparation.

I really learned a lot from Daniel. He clearly knows a lot about the topics he tutors in, and knows how to explain it in a way that's easy to understand. His demeanor was calm and is very easy to talk to!

I am so thankful we found Jeff!!! We had worked previously with a different SAT tutor who clearly didn't know what he was doing. Although Jeff was priced higher than some of the other tutors on Thumbtack, I wanted to see if spending a little more would make a difference. It did - we just got the scores back, and my son raised his score by 400 points! I cannot recommend working with Jeff enough. My son loved having him come to the house. We will miss Jeff, but I hope others can have the type of experience we did. You won't regret it!

It was a simple job. Six grade math. Most tutors either gave us the runaround or just didn't call us back. Eric at elite made sure we were satisfied from the first free trial to the session before my daughters test. Very well done

Cindy Chanin understands the testing and admission process like no other. She has an extensive professional background and helped us navigate the high school admission process for our daughter, like a Ninja! Cindy invested her time and energy into our daughter and took it upon herself to get to know her. She was able to decipher what kind of learner she was and which of her tutors would be a good fit for her. For the weeks that we worked with Rainbow EDU, Cindy called everyday. She wanted feedback about the tutoring sessions and wanted our daughter to feel confident and empowered. Cindy is a student advocate and coach. Much, much more than a tutor. This is a full service operation...the real deal. Cindy Chanin...Rainbow EDU...I just lucked out...hope you do too!

Mr. Frost is an excellent tutor. He patiently explained subjects in Calc that were beyond my understanding. I also had Mr. Frost tutor me in staticis and he clearly explained and throughly answered all my questions about the material. He is super approachable and makes the subject matter understandable. Mr. Frost took time to answer all of my questions and cared about my academic performance in the class. I highly recommend working with him! His rates are reasonable and he was flexible with scheduling.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I prepare for the GMAT?

If you’re thinking of enrolling in graduate school to earn your MBA, it’s time to start thinking about preparing for the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). Working with a GMAT tutor is for many people a wise investment to help you strengthen the academic areas you may be weak in and improving your overall test score. A GMAT prep tutor should teach you not only the kind of information you need to know for the test, but the best test-taking strategies. The GMAT tests you on four categories: quantitative, verbal, integrated reasoning, and an analytical writing assessment. Cramming is probably not going to give you good results for this standardized test; give yourself between two and six months to prepare, focusing on your most challenging areas first. Successful GMAT prep means planning ahead and studying thoroughly. Those students who reported studying under 75 hours were more likely to score 400 or lower on the test, while students who studied 121 hours or more were more likely to score 700 or higher on the test. Hiring a GMAT prep tutor can range in price from under $50 to over $200 per hour.

How long does it take to prepare for the GMAT?

Pros recommend planning to spend two to six months for GMAT prep. The test itself is only 3.5 hours long, but your score will have a major effect on what schools grant you admission. If you’d like to be considered for one of the top-tier schools, it’s recommended to score at least a 700. Your goals for your MBA can help drive your GMAT prep. GMAT tutors will guide your study plan and help analyze your strengths and weaknesses. GMAT tutors also offer professional guidance and insights on strategic GMAT test-taking. Avail yourself of free GMAT prep software that provides sample test questions for you to practice. The creators of the GMAT recommend creating a structured study plan detailing when you will study each day and what topics you will study during each session. Take into account what style of learning works best for you (solo study, one-on-one tutoring, group tutoring, study groups, prep courses) and proceed accordingly. The test is made up of these four categories, each with an allotted time:

    • Analytical writing assessment: 1 topic, 30 minutes.
    • Integrated reasoning: 12 questions, 30 minutes.
    • Quantitative: 37 questions, 75 minutes.
    • Verbal: 41 questions: 75 minutes.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
