WOW, Temi is amazing! She is the real deal right here on Thumbtack - who knew?! I highly recommend Temi for any aspiring writer to connect with and benefit from - a professional editor with a gift for lending clear, concise changes and suggestions to the work an author has agonized over! The work is tight, crisp, clean. Her professionalism is top-notch. Responsiveness and punctuality - excellent! The work was delivered before the deadline I asked for and Temi won't tell you she can do something by a certain date if she can't deliver. When I write the sequel to the work I just finished, I won't hesitate to go straight back to Temi for Round 2.

Lois is a wonderful tutor. As soon as she heard me talking she knew exactly what was it that I needed to train my English in order to take it to the next level. Highly recommendable to those who have an advanced level of English, because she is really precise and you get to learn a lot of history on the language. It is very enjoyable and it makes sense. If you need ESL, she's the one! She is also a writer, producer and acting coach, therefore she's also super creative and helpful when it comes to having to work out some text.

As a first time writer I was very skeptical to whom I could trust with my six years of progress but Celia did an excellent job in editing, proof-reading and helping my dream become a reality.

As a special writer journalist, I'm well acquainted with the term "checks all the boxes." Well, see above. That's exactly what I've done. As my website project manager, everything you could hope for is contained in those boxes above. And as someone who is a tad tech challenged, having Jen at PhantomPower on the job gave me the added benefit of getting a good night's sleep. Can't say enough good things...

Andy's writing is incredible! He has just the right touch of humor and heart. No matter, what you need a writer for, the idea is engagement of the reader. I can't think of a better writer to fulfill that goal. Thank you.

When working with a professional writer a business has to consider the writer's qualifications. Christopher from Ghost Strategies has a science background(Aeronautical Engineering), is an attorney and has written professionally for over 20 years. Because of this background he is very detailed oriented and is used to meeting deadlines. His science background means that he considers the substantive topic as well as good editing and writing practices in performing any project. He was an asset to my law firm and to my clients over a number of years.

Adam Gropman has written extensively for LA Weekly on a big variety of news and cultural topics. As one of the editors who has worked with him most often, I can say that he's a wonderful guy, an excellent reporter and good writer, so easy to work with, and just a topnotch pro. I think his greatest talent is that he really grasps topics and issues quickly, even if he hasn't dealt with the topic before. He's lots of fun, too, but definitely a grownup.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

  • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
  • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
  • Expertise in your target area.
  • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

  • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
  • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
