Introduction: I offer lessons in classical piano and contemporary styles (pop, jazz, gospel), for students of all ages (5-85) and levels. I encourage students to learn skills such as note reading and music theory, and emphasize using those skills to not only learn repertoire that they like, but also to create their own music. Playing by ear, learning chord/scale theory and good piano technique are also encouraged. At least one yearly recital is given where my students perform for each other, family and friends. I also work with singers and other musicians who want to increase their piano and keyboard skills for songwriting and accompanying. I enjoy the interaction with students who are excited about learning, guiding their development, and sharing my knowledge and joy of music. In order to practice social distancing, lessons can be taken remotely, via Zoom or FaceTime. When lessons are given in your home, face masks should be worn and piano keys/surfaces disinfected.

Piano Lessons

Our 4-year-old and 7-year-old have really enjoyed their intro piano lessons with Charlyn. They are proud and excited to be playing songs so quickly!

Piano Lessons

We had been searching for a piano teacher for our 8 year daughter for some time and finally found Charlyn a few months ago. We're so glad we did. Charlyn is extremely patient, very professional and totally devoted to teaching. She makes the lessons fun and works toward my daughters interests all the while teaching the important foundations of the instrument. I love her well-rounded approach--she includes a little of everything from theory, finger positioning, to sight reading, etc... My daughter has learned so much and we've only just begun! I would highly recommend Charlyn to anyone--young or old--interested in lessons!

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

Once we make contact through Thumbtack, we call and set up a time to meet.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have a Bachelor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance from the University of Michigan School of Music (classical). I also attended the Tanglewood Music Festival Seminar for Conducting, and hold an Associates Arts degree from the Musicians Institute in Hollywood, CA (Keyboard studies, digital recording, musical direction and film scoring). Even though my initial education and training was in classical music, my professional experience and later education is in contemporary styles, like Jazz and Pop. I also grew up playing in church, playing hymns, traditional and contemporary gospel, and worked many years as a church pianist and co-choir director. I lived in Berlin, Germany for 19 years, where I played with several bands over the years, sometimes in groups that played and recorded original material, other times with cover bands. I've also played for musical theater, and spoken word artists. I am a published songwriter. I have 30 years experience as a professional musician and teacher.
