I was absolutely delighted and happy about Happy paws services and training. Raquel is a true professional when it comes to dogs. I had "an emergency" travel overseas for three weeks. She took absolute great care of my puppy and training. I was amazed at Raquel's clarity in explaining how to work with my puppy and showing me what my puppy needs when it comes to obedience, being safe and happy. I received videos and chat updates regularly So I could see my puppy and know she is well taken care of. My puppy was very happy at her place, was treated as a family member, loved & very well taken care of. I couldn't have been gone as long as I was if it wasn't for Raquel's willingness to take care of my puppy and she made sure I had peace of mind while I was gone. Thank you. Brilliant work.

After only a couple of sessions with Karen, we were able to see a marked difference in our dog Winnie's behavior. Her suggestions and training tips were " spot on " in terms of some of the behavioral issues we'd been experiencing. Her loving, yet matter~of~fact approach was just what we'd needed and our Winnie already seems to be much more well adjusted and happier. We would highly recommend Karen and her Bow Wow Method of Dog Training!

John has been such a help in teaching about potty-training my puppy, and now we are working on the fun stuff. I want my dog to grow up being well-trained so that others may enjoy him as much as I do! John is providing that path and I am so glad I found such a knowledgeable trainer!

Our trainer Denise has been such a great help with our crazy puppy. We hired her when the pup was 5 months old . We were in desperate need of training . Our pup was pottying in the house even though we had designated a spot for her to go. It was exhausting cleaning up after her all day. With Denise's help and expertise , our pup has learned were to go potty and we have learned as well the importance of consistency . It is evident that Denise is gifted as a dog trainer and our experience with her has been very professional . It is obvious she loves animals and there is a gentle way to train. Thanks Denise With love from Summer and the Courtney family:)

Duane helped teach us how to work with our Shepard mix. Our beautiful pet was crazy hyper and didn't want to listen. With Duane's guidance, she now listens and is the best dog. I highly recommend Duane for dog training.

I would highly recommend Cassidy's services. She truly understands dogs and their behavior but more importantly understands human behavior. She helped me to see how my actions were affecting how my dog reacted. Since making the changes she recommended training my dog has become much easier and enjoyable for both of us.

Being a Main officers of Rescue4Redemption, we pride ourswelves on picking the very best in the animal rescue and rehab business. Since the inception I have wanted Robert Weatherwax as our main trainer for several years. I never thought I could get him. He is one of the very best dog trainers in the business. If you don't believe me you can Goggle him. His family has had over 100 yrs experience in the dog training business and their dogs all are excellent. I thank the lord that Robert has come on board with us. Our mission is to save and rehab as many animals as we possible can. And he is the Diamond that just does that. I saw a post on here from some woman saying some disparaging things about Robert. These comments are completely false. Robert never even met the women, nor did he train her dog. So with that being said just ignore those remarks because they are just are not true. Just some stranger ranting about someone she doesn't even know. No one cares more for your dogs and getting them turned around the Robert. He is top notch. The standard of excellence he shows with each and every client shows when you 1st meet him. Truth be said if he didnt have this quality about him Rescue4Redemption would not have brought him on board. Once again we stand by excellence. With that being said, we stand with Robert Ruddell Weatherwax.

Stefanie has trained 4 of my dogs over more than 10 years and I cannot sing her praises enough! She has true compassion for all animals and has rescued and found homes for countless number of dogs. She has a real gift of "talking" to the dogs -- she can read their personalities and they bond with her. She is experienced, professional, strict but kind and understands all breeds -- purebreds and mixed. She assesses the situation, background, needs, etc. of the owner/s as well as the dog and adjusts her training method accordingly. Above and beyond her dog training skills, Stefanie is a warm, principled, caring person. I consider her a friend as much as my dogs' trainer.

Steve Welch of K9 Dog Training came to visit us and spent a great deal of time detailing his program and how it works. Steve and his associate, Wendy, were friendly, kind and considerate. As a result we let Babe, are Boston Terrier, and deeply loved little girl go with them to Training. We know she is happy and safe and in caring hands. I feel certain she'll return with some good lessons learned.

We sent our 9 month old puppy to Love Ur K9 for the family pet training program. It took about 9 days total. We were very impressed with the training our dog received and how receptive he was to us implementing his new commands. Kevin was very thorough in teaching us all that our dog had learned and it took us a while to get comfortable, but once we did, he has shown flying colors. We are so excited to know that we have a way to train our dog new things and instill good behavior in him. Kevin, Gabby, and Latoya were great in explaining why and how they train and their philosophies behind their training. I always know that they are just a phone call or text away if I have any questions and the group classes are great as well. We recommend Love Ur K9 to EVERYONE as we have had such a great experience!

Dave was such a great help to us in training our dog (or us, really)! He really took the time to explain the process and work with Sadie to overcome her fearful reaction to other dogs. She's made great progress & we look forward to more training sessions in the future. Highly recommended! Oh, and Sadie absolutely LOVES HIM.

This review is long overdue. We worked with Dave a few months back and he is fantastic! My husband and I have a 19month old Goldendoodle who has had previous training, puppy training through Petsmart and Petco but none of it compared to the training we received from Dave. He is great at what he does and explains things in a way that make total sense, like why didn't I think of this before?! He uses positive reinforcement training, which was huge for us. Dave works with your schedule and is flexible, he emails you after every session to go over what you've learned and how to continue the training when he's not around. We see a total difference in our dog after having sessions with Dave, we are looking forward to having him back in the near future to continue our training!

Marco is currently working with our 2 labradoodle puppies (11 wks old) and he is amazing. The puppies are responding to all their new commands and love the positive feed back training. I've had dog trainers in the past for older dogs and Marco's method is far superior to any other trainer we have used. I would highly recommend him.

All aspects of Paw by Paw is amazing. Ayeumi is so kind, patient and understanding of the dogs that she is training. She got our dog as a baby and then he went back 8 months later and a 100 lbs heavier. Her training of both the dog and owner is superb as well as her assistance when needed. I would recommend her absolutely and proudly.

LeNai is a professional through and through and knows dogs amazingly well and can handle every size of dog. Walking, training, playing - she is a pro! But what really makes the difference for me, is that she is treating your dog like it is her own. She gives my Sasha so much love and helps her overcome her separation anxiety. She gives updates every day, and I can 100% rely on her. When I go on my trips, I have 100% peace of mind leaving my dog with LeNai.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
