Raquel is absolutely amazing and words cannot adequately express how thrilled we are with her dog training services (actually she trains people to communicate with dogs). Our deaf and partially- sighted Great Dane had some behavior issues. It's hard to manage any 140 pound dog, much less one that is deaf and sight-impaired. Other trainers (not on Thumbtack) recommended expensive or lengthy training sessions, and even a 10 day boot camp. Raquel taught us how to understand and train our dog, and she did it in THREE HOURS! Amazing! She explained dog psychology and sociology, and taught us how to work with our big boy. She's also available for telephone follow-ups without charge. She clearly has a gift for dogs and loves what she does, and we're thrilled. If you're looking for a dog trainer, look no further - Raquel is truly wonderful.

Karen is very knowledgeable and very passionate about what she does. I have done some research on dog training, and I very much agree with her methodology of relating to the dogs on a pack level. Karen did a fantastic job of conveying this information to us and really breaking out what key actions would show the dogs that we are the pack leader. I know that we have to right tools now to help make our puppers less stressed and lead happy and healthy lives.

DeeCee was great! She came to me in Malibu and worked with my puppy, Milo, for 90 minutes. She taught me how to be more firm but also incredibly loving with my puppy and how to prepare him for service dog training. She affirmed what I did right and corrected what I did wrong and did an altogether great job. Milo loved her too! Would recommend! Many thanks from us!

John is calm, confident and professional. He is amazing! Dog training is as much about training the owners as it is training the dog. He explains how dogs think and how we communicate with them. Best money I've spent in a while. I'd highly recommend this trainer!

I am currently working on service dog training with Denise. She is AMAZING!! My SD I'm training is also the first dog I've ever owned. That being said, Denise is really patient with me as I learn how to be a good dog owner as well as train my dog. She is very go with the flow with the training, as far as if I have anything come up in between classes, we address the problem and work through it right away. I'm so happy she's a part of our lives! Best most professional service I've recieved.

Hi, my name is Laura. I signed up for a 'group' dog training class in the San Fernando Valley. I highly recommend Duane Overturf for your dog training needs! Duane always had a great attitude! His handling of each dog was consistent and with a gentle authority. You could tell, he knew what he was doing. It amazed me how quickly dogs responded to his commands. Duane had total control of each situation at hand. Also, behaviors such as; a barking problem, chewing problem, digging problem, etc. - Duane had training techniques that conquered each one. He made dog training look easy! I was extremely impressed with how well all the owners and dogs did at the end of the course! Now that's a G O O D D O G ! Oh, and anytime I had a question, I called Duane and he took the time, walked me through the problem step by step, making sure I understood and was confident I could handle the situation before hanging up the phone. Duane is an outstanding dog trainer!

Being a Main officers of Rescue4Redemption, we pride ourswelves on picking the very best in the animal rescue and rehab business. Since the inception I have wanted Robert Weatherwax as our main trainer for several years. I never thought I could get him. He is one of the very best dog trainers in the business. If you don't believe me you can Goggle him. His family has had over 100 yrs experience in the dog training business and their dogs all are excellent. I thank the lord that Robert has come on board with us. Our mission is to save and rehab as many animals as we possible can. And he is the Diamond that just does that. I saw a post on here from some woman saying some disparaging things about Robert. These comments are completely false. Robert never even met the women, nor did he train her dog. So with that being said just ignore those remarks because they are just are not true. Just some stranger ranting about someone she doesn't even know. No one cares more for your dogs and getting them turned around the Robert. He is top notch. The standard of excellence he shows with each and every client shows when you 1st meet him. Truth be said if he didnt have this quality about him Rescue4Redemption would not have brought him on board. Once again we stand by excellence. With that being said, we stand with Robert Ruddell Weatherwax.

Thank Goodness for Cassidy! In a moment of insanity we got ourselves 2 rescue pups, not thinking what it would take to train these cute little babies in the midst of a crazy schedule. Cassidy came to the rescue. She came up to meet us, checked out a yard for unsafe plants, screened off an area that could be dangerous for the little ones and then scooped up our pups for a 10 day Camp Cassidy experience and brought back two much calmer pups. They go into their crates at night without a whimper and get better daily with the commands she taught us. The price was unbeatable and we know our puppies got tons of love.I know she does other services but having her take them and take over the whole intro period was a godsend. The moment we met her we knew we could trust her. And her love of animals is apparent. I would recommend her to anyone who wants some help training their dogs. She even teared up when she had to leave them with us and say good bye. Give her a call, relief is on the way.

Steve is an incredible, elite master trainer. He holds the key to unlocking all of your dogs' best attributes. He has done wonders for my dogs, and I have witnessed him doing even more for others. There's nothing that this man can't fix about your dog. But, you must be willing to put in the time and do what it takes to maintain. I have two mixed breeds (brother and sister) that have severe separation anxiety, when they weren't near each other. They were completely co dependent on each other, fearful and extremely sensitive to everything around them. They would whine and bark when separated. Steve had them for less than two weeks, and now they have no problem, at all being separated. He taught me how to build their confidence, and help them succeed. Which has made training them in obedience much easier. They now have the will to work, and the desire to learn more. As do I. He has inspired me so much that it has now become my passion, and I am now his apprentice. What I love most about the way that he trains, is that he is very gentle and patient with the dogs. He is by far more concerned with the dogs' well-being than anything else. He can be pretty tough on the owners, but once you come to realize why, you really can't be mad at him. The issues that your dog has, are typically there because of you. Your dog is a mirror of yourself. Once you've accepted that, you can then both change together, building the bond between you and your dog even stronger. But, you must be part of the change in order for it to work. Wendy is my senior master trainer, and I have learned so much already from both of them. They have taught me beginner and advanced obedience, behavior work, tracking, scent detection, how to show in AKC competitions, how to train movie dogs, and much more. Through the skills that I have acquired from them, I am now teaching my own classes and training dogs daily, using the same incredible methods that these amazing dog trainers have taught me. I highly recommend Steve and Wendy, and all of their trainers to anyone who truly cares for their dog.

Kim is an exceptional dog trainer. We had rescued an adult doberman and needed some guidance both at home and in public. Kim came to our home and completed a very in-depth assessment of not only our dogs behaviors (or lack there of), but my husband's and mine. She then began a very systematic and personal approach to training our dog. Kim went above and beyond and came to our home to work with our dog and some of our friends and housekeeper that our dog was not doing well with. She also provided us with the tools to work with our dog and bring out the best in her. We could not be happier with the results that we have seen after the training that Kim has provided. I would highly recommend Kim for your dog training needs.

Love Ur K9 is the best decision I ever made for my Mini Australian Shepherd, Camo. I cannot say enough how good they have been to me, and my dog. I am forever grateful for everything they have done for us. Here's the full story: I heard about Kevin through a friend who had a great experience after her dog was trained by Kevin. I was looking for a dog trainer who could not only help with obedience training my three month old puppy, but also work on some dominance behavior issues. I had read so many books on raising a puppy, and also grew up in a family with many dogs so I thought I knew what I was doing. Our first meeting with Kevin was in our home, where he met Camo, and got a better understanding of our home setup and routines. It is also where Camo was comfortable and displaying some early signs of dominant behavior. Kevin immediately picked up on this and made some changes to the way in which we interact with Camo. We started puppy behavior and obedience training that same week. Kevin also trained us as handlers, so that we understood the training and could repeat it at home, that way Camo would not be able to default back to bad behaviour. When Camo was 9 months old, we heard that we had to move to Australia for my husband's work. There was no way that I could make the move without Camo. Australia is extremely strict with importing pets, and theres a six month intensive preparation of vet checks, and massive costs involved before dogs are allowed to enter the country. We had to leave two months after we heard the news so we had to make a plan for Camo in the meant time. Kevin took Camo into his home for four months, looking after him, doing service dog training with him, and helping with many arrangements to get Camo reunited with us. Camo joined us in Australia in June and I am elated to have my best friend back by my side once again. He is still full of personality, but by far the most obedient, trained and socialised dog in Melbourne!!! THANK YOU Love Ur K9, from the bottom of our hearts!!!

We are house sitting a dog for 6 weeks, and we needed immediate training as the dog had not been previously trained. Allison came over, helped me immensely, and we are on the road to good behavior! Allison will be available as our needs arise, but I highly recommend her for her knowledge, patience and guidance.

We are so grateful for finding Dogwood K9 Training Experience and working with Ron. Our rescue dog, Jackson, was a stray with no prior training and some behavioral issues that we couldn’t address on our own. Jackson had human aggression towards males, did not listen to commands, jumped on furniture, nipping, chasing our cats, incessant barking, anxiety, the list goes on. By working with Ron we have learned how to address all of these issues through behavior modification training. The best part of working with Ron is that he makes it fun for the dog by using games as a primary means of training. Jackson loves going to Ron’s classes and surprisingly isn’t aggressive towards him in any way, probably due to Ron’s sweet and caring nature towards dogs that Jackson can sense. Ron’s training method starts with the basics and then we build upon the foundation using baby steps so that the dog progressively works up the full commands, while truly understanding them. Our dog’s behavior has done a 180 since we started training and he shows respect for us now. This is after a different trainer told us we should probably take our dog to the shelter because he is going to be too hard train (a lost cause, as they say). Ron’s ultra-positive attitude towards Jackson helped us see that although he is not a perfect dog, he is the perfect dog for us. Ron is a truly exceptional dog trainer. Don’t expect magic; it takes hard work to counter-condition a dog with bad habits like Jackson, but Ron’s expertise will equip you with all of the tools that you need to work with your dog. What I like about the classes is that Ron is training ME to work with my dog so that I can continue to use his tactics long after our classes end. Through his guidance I am creating a long-lasting bond with my dog based on respect, but mostly based on FUN! We love Dogwood!

Jessie is knowledgeable and reliable about walking dogs. She has some training experience. My dog is very leash reactive and I'm not totally comfortable letting him go with someone without my supervision. Jessie was willing to let me do that. For now, I've postponed dog walking, but not because of Walk'n Wag'n. They seem to be a reliable and professional company. I would recommend them.

I am so happy to have found Daniele and Beijo's Corner. I had just got out of a relationship and I felt like I wanted to adopt a pet to keep my mind off things. Daniele helped me to adopt my tuxedo cat Midnight. Daniele said that cats fit my personality, and all this time I thought I was a dog person! Midnight though very loving was also very timid. He would cry when I left the house for work and it would disturb the neighbors. He would also run and hide under the bed when I had company over. I went to the Beijo's Corner website and I saw the packages that Daniele offered for the pet behavioral service. Daniele came to my rescue! She has been working with Midnight on the anxiety and socialization packages. I also had homework of my own to do. This was an amazing learning experience. I now know that it eases Midnights anxiety if I play soft jazz before I leave to work. And that is just one of the many tips and tricks I have learned during this journey. I do not know what I would have done with out the help of Daniele and Beijo's Corner. And I am exciting for what's to come!

We met with Beth Harrison today and laid out a program for board and training. She was very cheerful, organized and loving with my dogs. I felt they would enjoy being with her and her dogs in her home during training. I was also delighted to know know she does boarding if we are traveling. I am sure this will be a good experience all around.

So grateful to Leo and his advice/knowledge! He has been tremendously helpful with my dog and helping to work through behavioral problems of my new dog Bebe, who for over a year was in the shelter and before that, she had a lifetime of abuse. He has helped set her (and me) up for success in a life without abuse and only love, but setting structure and discipline to help her feel secure. He truly cares about his clients and their pets, which has been evident in all of our discussions. Leo really does go above and beyond! Can’t wait to work with him more in the future!

All aspects of Paw by Paw is amazing. Ayeumi is so kind, patient and understanding of the dogs that she is training. She got our dog as a baby and then he went back 8 months later and a 100 lbs heavier. Her training of both the dog and owner is superb as well as her assistance when needed. I would recommend her absolutely and proudly.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
