Introduction: Praised by Opera News as a "gleaming soprano" and the Wall Street Journal as “piercingly lovely,” soprano Leela Subramaniam has sung on the world's most prestigious stages. She received her Master of Music and Professional Studies Certificate in Vocal Performance from the Manhattan School of Music and her B.A. from the University of California-Los Angeles in Art History and Music (Vocal Performance). Leela is currently on faculty at the Angeles Academy of Music and maintains a voice studio in Los Angeles where she teaches students repertoire ranging from pop, jazz, classical art song and arias, to musical theater. Her students range from complete beginners to advanced, from age 5 to 50. The success of all her students is grounded in her belief that singing with complete freedom and ease is possible for everyone. An international performer, she has sung on the stages of the Bavarian State Opera, Metropolitan Opera, Irish National Opera, LA Opera, Carnegie Hall, Gärtnerplatztheater in Munich, Theater Basel, Opera Theater of St. Louis, as well as in festivals with the Prototype Festival in NYC, Chamber Music of Northwest, and the Donizetti Festival in Bergamo. Her performed roles include the title roles in Lucia di Lammermoor (Donizetti) and Thais (Massenet), Donna Anna (Don Giovanni / Mozart), Pamina (Die Zauberflöte / Mozart), Miss Wordsworth (Albert Herring / Britten), and Angelica (Orlando Paladino / Haydn). She has been a 1st prize winner of the Joan Taub Ades Competition in NYC and the Sigma Alpha Iota Competition, as well as a finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, Giulio Gari Foundation, and Zinka Milanov Competition. As a young artist, she was a member of the Bavarian State Opera Studio, attended the Chautauqua Institution, and was a young artist with Opera Theater of St. Louis. Passionate about contemporary music, Leela has performed in three world premieres and frequently collaborates with living composers. She speaks German, French, Italian, and Spanish conversationally.

Leela is an experienced and wonderful vocal teacher and I highly recommend her to any prospective students. She's classically trained, and having been a performer herself, she is able to both provide her students the vocal training and the mentorship they need. She has a real passion for teaching music which always comes through in her lessons. I enjoyed singing casually before I started training with her, and in a matter of a few months, Leela helped me improve my voice quality and learn better singing technique. Thanks to her, I have rediscovered one of my passions in life.

First time doing a vocal lesson. Leela was super encouraging while still being able to push me, which I feel can be a hard balance to find with teachers of any kind. I would absolutely hire her if you need a vocal coach. It was an absolute joy to work with Leela.

Over the course of just a few months, I feel as though I’ve made leaps and bounds studying vocals with noticeable progress marks being reached very frequently under the guidance of Leela. Her experience and undeniably great ear for the world of opera and classical singing is very apparent as she has helped me tweak everything from pronunciation, timing, dynamics, breath, technique as well as anything under the umbrella of singing. I’ve personally had a host of many music teachers both private and from school in choirs, concert bands, marching bands, Orchestra, piano, and guitar over the years and I really can’t say that any of my former teachers/directors have come close to the level of attention to detail and expertise Leela has brought to my craft. She is truly a gem that I’m so glad I’ve found.
