Introduction: Many tutors do this as side work. I work full-time professionally as a tutor and uphold the highest professional standard. I put together lesson plans, tailoring programs individually to students so that I am teaching in a way that they can best understand. I refine and adapt my programs as we go, based on the results I'm seeing. This ensures that students receive an experience that is above and beyond the rest. My only goal is to raise grades and test scores, and I never lose focus or deviate from that goal for one second, and I ensure that my students feel motivated, interested, and engaged, which makes all the difference. I love the creativity involved in unlocking a student's best performance. Every student has a different approach to schoolwork and tests. Deciphering that approach and taking it to a higher level is a challenge and one that keeps the job exciting!

I am really pleased so far with Jeffrey's tutoring with my 11th grade daughter. The specific one-on-one focused methods he uses seems to not only get to the targeted areas she is needing help with, but strengthen her confidence in the whole daunting subject of standardized test-taking.

We have been extremely impressed by Jeffrey Smith who has tutored our son in his preparation for the SAT and ACT. Initially he accurately assessed our son's strengths and weaknesses and prepared a study plan accordingly. He has made sure to adjust the plan on a continuous bases to best meet our son's needs. Additionally, Jeff has been very reliable and able to meet our specific schedule. Finally, Jeff has boosted our son's confidence significantly, which we believe is crucial for these types of tests. We are beyond satisfied and highly recommend Jeff's Tutoring Services.

I am so thankful we found Jeff!!! We had worked previously with a different SAT tutor who clearly didn't know what he was doing. Although Jeff was priced higher than some of the other tutors on Thumbtack, I wanted to see if spending a little more would make a difference. It did - we just got the scores back, and my son raised his score by 400 points! I cannot recommend working with Jeff enough. My son loved having him come to the house. We will miss Jeff, but I hope others can have the type of experience we did. You won't regret it!

FAQs

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have been teaching since I was in college, both as a teacher aide, and within individual tutoring groups. To set myself apart from the others, and to better identify with my students, I retake all the major standardized tests each year. This helps me to be a better tutor because it ensures my scores are always current, it shows me all the little changes in the tests year by year, and it allows me to empathize with my students' experience in taking the test. I look at myself as a continuous student. I'm always looking to learn more and grow.

  • What types of customers have you worked with?

I work with a lot of students who attend competitive private schools and are looking to gain an edge in an extremely competitive environment. I work most often with students looking to make competitive scores on their standardized tests (ISEE, SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT). I also work with students in academic subjects. I find there's a unique experience to be had with each and every client. I also specialize in working with students with ADD/ADHD or with organizational problems. I am able to help these students break down mental barriers they've put up and achieve more than they ever thought possible.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

The easiest way is with specific questions. Try asking what some of the strategies are that the tutor uses, or ask if they have any specific stories. This is the easiest way to gauge a good tutor. Just because a tutor went to a good school or has gotten a great test score doesn't necessarily mean he's a good teacher. That's why a specific story will give you the info that sets one tutor apart from another.
