My asphalt driveway was thoroughly cleaned, patched and then seal-coated; Richard took the necessary time to do an excellent job rather than once over lightly, and I am definitely pleased with the results. I highly recommend Central Coast Paving. And, thank you Thumbtack.

Jessie is such pleasure to work with. Very reliable, responsive, thorough and on time. We wanted to widen our outdoor patio's floor and add a 18 ft by 6ft cement. I went on the website and saw Mcgraw construction through Thumbtack. Their site showed several pictures that is similar to what I wanted done on my Patio I message Jessie. He requested if he can come and see the proposed project, get the right measurement and check what materials/machine needed to complete the job. He came Thursday, checkout the patio, measured the area, did some computations, made few calls to get pricing for the materials/machine needed and within 20 minutes gave me a very reasonable quote on the spot. Since I want it done right away, he tried to work with my schedule and have my cement extension done the following Monday. I was at work when they came to my backyard, but Jessie and his co-worker, Lupe worked tirelessly to complete the job on time. Jessie took pictures of the step by step development of their work since I cannot see it. He sent pictures using his phone and text it to me while they are working on it, placing of the Rebar, the picture of the cement truck on my driveway and pouring on the cement, and when Lupe is trying to even out the cement. They came at 12:00NN and finished the job at 4:00PM. I was able to meet them at 3PM and saw Lupe and Jessie finishing it when a broom. They left the backyard spotless because they clean up all their mess including our mess. May patio looks fantastic, and my family are happy with the result. A job well done! Thank you Jessie and Lupe. Expect for more calls from us for future projects.

We had Dario of Buzzy Bee work on our front yard landscaping and we are extremely pleased with his work. Landscaping included pavers, bluestone porch, bluestone path, grass, and plants/trees. His price was reasonable and he kept his promises including keeping close to his estimated timeline even tho we added a few things after we started. We love the quality of work and have already received many compliments from our neighbors. We wish we had used him on our backyard but had hired someone else who took a 6 week job and turned it into a 6 month job. In hindsight and after our experience with Dario, we wish we had turned to Thumbtack and Buzzy Bee for that project first! We would defend recommend Buzzy Bee for your landscaping needs.

Mike gave a prompt estimate online, then arranged to vist the property and give a more precise one once he had seen and measured the site. He and his workers did three things: (1) he lifted up an uneven section of stone terrace, relaid the baserock, and reinstalled the stone pavers so they looked perfectly flat again; (2) they spread mulch in my woodland garden; and (3) they spread gravel on 1/3 of a mile of trails. Mike is polite and honest, and his workers were courteous and worked without my needing to supervise them much. They did make a few little mistakes (disturbing some drip irrigation stakes, covering some low growing plants with mulch), but these were relatively minor slip-ups that Mike endeavored to correct promptly once the issues were brought to his attention.

Came out to give us our estimate, arrived on time and looked over our job. We just finished our very long driveway that had many cracks and repairs needed. They repaired and sealed it with 2 coats and everything looks wonderful. We didn't pay until the job was finished to our satisfaction. Also was told if we find anything that settled and needs a touch-up just give them a call.

Both Greg and Brandon did an outstanding job completing our fence this past weekend. We were on a tight timeline because we are hosting a Bridal Shower in our backyard this coming weekend. Greg and Brandon were both conscientious and professional in getting the job done! I appreciate the fact that Greg spent quite a bit of time tracking down redwood planks in order to finish the project. I would highly recommend Greg for any landscaping and/or yard projects.

I decided to expand my driveway because of the drought (less lawn to water) and two of my teenage kids needing room for their cars. I also wanted a concrete pathway poured to make access to our porch easier. KR Concrete was one of THE best contractors I have ever worked with. They responded immediately, were competitively priced, and completed the work quickly (3 days from start to finish). They are a first class, family operation with great attention to detail and customer service. I highly recommend them and would not hesitate to hire them again when I have my next project.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good concrete contractor?

Concrete contractors pave driveways, build foundations for homes, install retaining walls, create hardscaping for front and back yards, build concrete steps, and so much more. When searching for a driveway contractor, read reviews from previous customers and ask for referrals. Ask the contractor for photos of examples of their work that’s similar to what you want. Confirm they will get the proper permits so your driveway is up to code. Hiring a driveway contractor to install concrete can average $5-$6 per square foot, or more, depending on where you live, the slope and grade of the driveway site, and regional labor costs. For a new asphalt driveway, the cost could average from $3-5 per square foot. A standard concrete driveway of 500 square feet averaging $5-$6 per square foot would cost $2,500-$3,000 — so it pays to research someone who will do quality work. Excavation and grading work can increase your cost per square foot significantly. Ask whether the contractor provides a materials and labor warranty for their work. Some cracking of the concrete may occur as it settles, but you should talk with your contractor about any structural or aesthetic concerns you have. When hiring a concrete contractor, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

    What do paving contractors do?

Paving contractors can be hired to install a concrete or asphalt driveway at your home, office or property. They can also repave an asphalt or concrete driveway that has been damaged by time, weather or heavy loads. When you are looking for a driveway contractor, request quotes from at least three professionals who are in good standing and have great customer reviews. They should do a site visit and write you a bid, detailing the work involved, materials needed, approximate length of the project and estimated cost.

The site for your new driveway will determine costs and the work required for your contractor. First, the ground must be excavated to lay a clear path. This means removing any trees, bushes and stumps. Next, the driveway contractor will grade the area, making a level surface for the concrete or asphalt. To ensure proper drainage, driveway contractors should install a sub-base of compacted gravel (or similar) 4 inches-8 inches deep, depending on your soil type. Then the concrete or asphalt may be poured and smoothed over the top. Your driveway contractor should recommend an appropriate sealant for your climate and advise you on curing time. When hiring a paving contractor, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to redo a concrete driveway?

Replacing or renovating a damaged or time-worn asphalt or concrete driveway can boost your curb appeal and add to your home value. If your concrete driveway is nearing 20 years or more, it may be wise to invest in an entirely new driveway, instead of redoing your current one. Asphalt driveways average 15-20 years of life, so if you start needing major repairs around the 15 year mark, weigh the pros and cons of repairing or replacing it. Request bids from two to three driveway contractors to determine pricing and project scope, and check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack. Here are some examples of average costs:

    • The national average cost to hire a concrete specialist is $2,750, but that price can vary greatly depending on the work needed to repair and resurface your concrete driveway, the square footage of the project, current costs of concrete, and regional labor rates.
    • Driveway contractors average $2-$3 per square foot to smooth and resurface your asphalt driveway.
    • Resurfacing concrete driveways averages $3-$10 per square foot. Pricing can depend on repairs needed, project size and geographic location.
    • Nationally, the average cost for resurfacing a 500-square-foot driveway ranges from $2,000 to $5,000.
    • Sealant for a concrete drive can cost $20-$80 per gallon.
    • Sealant for an asphalt drive averages 25 cents per square foot.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
