"Jessa is a fantastic yoga teacher and massage therapist. She's extremely kind, professional, and will make sure to push you in the right direction while keeping your body comfortable. The space she practices at is serene and beautiful as its amidst trees near the Santa Cruz mountains. It was probably a large portion of what helped me focus on yoga and just relax when doing massage. I highly recommend working with Jessa."

"Giovanni is truly a talented massage therapist. I've had about 50+ different people massage me over the years and now that I've found Giovanni I don't need to use anyone else. As an athlete, I'm always looking for someone who can help get me back on my feet when I have aches or pains and he does it every time. Giovanni understands how to be firm and work out problems areas but he also makes you walk away feeling relaxed. He clearly knows how to work on a range of clients, both hard-core athletes to someone wanting just seeking some gentle relaxation. Goivanni truly understands how the body works and is able to give a massage that transforms you. He worked on me when I was pregnant and took me from barely being able to walk as a result of sciatica to complete healing. He really works to understand what is going on with your body and listens to your needs. Giovanni is someone that truly throws his entire heart into his profession and cares about the outcome of his treatment. He's always learning and incorporating new techniques into his treatment. As a woman getting a massage, I never feel uncomfortable and am always appreciative of how communicative and respectful Giovanni is. Ultimately, when I get a massage from Giovanni, I'm in a better place than I was before the treatment. I wish that all could experience his healing work."

"I live in LA but I still keep in constant communication with the Intentio staff who, even from a distance of 500 miles, are the best at advising me on how best to achieve my fitness & nutritional goals. It's so rare to find a group of people so single-mindedly focused on actual health rather than the aesthetic benefits of looking good, which seems to be the prevailing raison d'être of trainers here in SoCal. I can't recommend Anna or her team highly enough! It's worth every penny. "

"I would like to wholeheartedly recommend Tamar Leffert, of Capitola, as a certified massage expert. I had my first session in Spring 2018 with Tamar, and was immediately impressed by the calming ambience in the space she is able to create for her clients. Soft music, comfortable massage table (I’ve had some horrible ones), and her great touch. She is able to apply considerable pressure to problem areas, if that is what is necessary and/or desired, this is not always a given with many massage experts or physical therapists. Since my first visit I was very interested to return, and I have done so now at least 4 times since then. It has been a wonderful gift to myself every time, and I look forward to every session."

"I've been looking for a massage clinic for the past three months and stumbled upon Santa Cruz Core Fitness + Rehab. Made an appointment that same day. The massage was awesome as it got rid of the tightness from stress. Will definitely come back again. Thank you!!!"

"Lilah is a very attentive massage therapist. She listens closely to your answers when asking about areas that need attention. She also retains information of areas that might be problematic due to injury or chronic pain and is adept at working around such areas. Her knowledge base of techniques in massage therapy that can be used to address your issues has both breadth and depth. Her personality is nurturing and sweet without being saccharin making it easy to converse. She solicits feedback in order to better learn your body needs. Overall she's one of the best massage therapists I've had work on me."

"Serenity got my attention when I observed her working with another client at my gym. One of the things I most appreciated from Serenity is that when I first approached her about the possibility of personal training, she was not at all overwhelming as I have experienced with other prospective trainers. She was immediately in tune with my overall well-being and I sensed from the beginning that we could develop a collaborative relationship. My first-intuition into her character was that she truly connects with and cares about her clients. After working with Serenity for the last 5 months, I can attest that she is one of the most genuine and compassionate individuals I have met – coupled with being very competent, and passionate about her profession (which is much more expansive than just personal training.) Athletic for over 40 years, I first came to Serenity with acute and chronic injuries, and (despite the physical hindrances) an ambitious goal – to qualify for the Boston Marathon within the next few years. Serenity has devised a progressive plan for me, which she reviews on a weekly basis when we meet. With my input and her observance of my performance/abilities, she makes adjustments, keeps me steady, or moves me forward on her long-term plan. The last 10 mins. of my session are reserved for a deep tissue massage of an acute shoulder condition I had been suffering from for almost a year. I am so pleased to say that the combination of the weekly mini-massage and stretching/strengthening exercises Serenity has had me do for the past 5 months have drastically reduced my shoulder pain and I have regained most of the mobility. That said, Serenity will be the first to say “there’s still room for more improvement.” Additionally, Serenity continues to work with me to strengthen all muscle groups (including the easily overlooked but significant ones) to get my body better balanced in order to reduce the possibility of further injuries (past lower back and knee issues). Lately, Serenity has shared that I am ready for higher-level strengthening exercises and we are moving together towards the next phase of her long-term plan for me. Serenity is careful to inform me of which exercises I am ready to do on my own, and which ones I need to continue developing better-form under her direct guidance so that I may continue to progress prudently. I can feel myself getting stronger each month -- and with continued workout evolution, consistency and patience, I truly believe that Serenity will get me to my long-term goal of running the Boston Marathon sometime in the next several years! Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is Thai massage?

Thai massage, also called Thai yoga massage, combines acupressure and assisted yoga postures. Thai massage is based on the flow of energy through the body and focuses on energy lines called “sen.” It doesn’t use oils or lotions and, instead of rubbing muscles, the massage therapist compresses, pulls, stretches and rocks the recipient’s body to promote the flow of energy through these sen. In this form of massage therapy, practitioners use their hands, knees, legs and feet to apply deep muscle compression and stretch the body. It’s often performed on a mat on the floor instead of on a massage table. Like most forms of massage, Thai massage is used to relieve stress, improve range of motion and enhance flexibility. Some people also use Thai massage to address a range of health issues, including:

  • Relieving tension headaches
  • Decreasing back pain
  • Reducing joint stiffness and pain
  • Stimulating circulation and lymphatic drainage
  • Boosting energy

Because a traditional Thai massage session covers all of the muscles in your body, it typically lasts 90 minutes to 120 minutes.

How much do you tip a massage therapist?

All forms of massage therapy, from Thai massage to Swedish massage to deep tissue massage, are similar to other spa or hospitality services. So it’s appropriate to tip a massage therapist the standard hospitality rate of 15 percent to 20 percent of the cost of the session. For example, the national average cost for a deep tissue massage is $70-$90, so expect to tip $12-$18. Of course, you can always tip more or less depending on your experience, especially if you’ve opted for extra services. For example, expect to tip more for a couple’s hot stone massage session that includes aromatherapy. Also, if you’re paying with a gift certificate or coupon, or purchasing a discounted multi-session package, make sure to calculate your tip based on the full price of the massage.
