I retained WIS to conduct a delicate social media investigation. I had an immediate response, a tailored outcome that included a thorough analysis. All the contact I had was directly with the principal, and he was fantastic at explaining the process and alerting me to the realistic outcomes that I could expect to receive. I consequently had realistic expectations - and before I actually paid for anything - about what might be possible. I did not ultiamtely find everything I wanted but it was very clear indeed that WIS went well beyond the extra mile to help me, left no stone unturned in researching the issue and looking for an answer. As an example of going beyond the extra mile, WIS kept on the matter after sending me the report that I had paid for and voluntarily provided me with an update report that did contain additional useful information. Who else would stay on the case like that? I doubt it is industry practice, but it is the way WIS actually did things for me. I found WIS very polite, very responsive, very quick, very thorough and totally objective. I would have no hesitation in recommending WIS, and I personally will not waste a second looking elsewhere if I ever needed work of the sort WIS does to be done for me. It was an excellent experience, and good value for money as well.

I have never had to use the services of a Private Investigator so I didn't know what to expect when I found myself in a situation where I needed one. I called Morrow Detective Agency because I had six days to locate and have served with court papers an individual who had quit his job, moved out of his house and basically disappeared in an attempt to evade and avoid an upcoming financial judgement. When I talked to Steve Morrow on the phone his demeanor was very professional and he immediately put me at ease. He confidently told me that this was something that he could do. My wife and I hired Steve Morrow on a Friday morning and by 4pm of the same day he had located this individual. This individual was found to be living out of the area so Mr. Morrow quickly used his contacts to find someone in the area where the individual was living to serve him the court papers. Long story short the individual was served within the six day period that we had to work with. Not only did Steve Morrow work miracles in a short time frame but he consistently communicated with us to inform us of the progress of our assignment. He also stayed on top of all aspects of the process from beginning to end. This is an amazing work ethic and professionalism that is hard to find these days in any profession. If like me you one day find yourself in a situation, where you need the services of a Detective Agency then Morrow Detective Agency unequivocally, hands down is the agency you need to hire. Thank you Steve for your professionalism, great communication skills and effective results.

Becky is just great. I was disappointed with the snail pace of police/detectives in LA county in regard to my case (theft). So I found her online..called her and noticed a difference right away. There are times in life when you say.."I need a lawyer." Originally, that was my thinking.. But let her investigate and uncover the truth first.. Then hire an attorney if you really need to.

I hired Chameleon to conduct surveillance on a previous employee that I suspected is not injured at all. I am extremely happy with the results that saved me a lot of headaches and saved money to the insurance company.

I recommend Brown Investigations. My family was in a situation where we needed a PI. I found the information for Brown Investigations on Craigslist. I contacted the agency by email and then spoke to Mr. Brown on the phone. He was extremely helpful and informative. He also keeps his fees reasonable. One PI quoted us a $9000 retainer, another charged $875 per day. Mr. Brown's retainer was very fair compared to these other two.

UNIT 07 was very refreshing to work with...I needed help in the form of bodyguards and I needed my former business partner investigated for fraud against myself and my new business partner. UNIT 07 was very methodical with the way every aspect of my case was handled, I only wished I could have been more involved but they got the job done and I think I was to emotional to get to close anyways. Thanks again. Robert E. C.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a private investigator do?

First and foremost, good private investigators follow laws. Unlike on TV, they don’t break in windows or hack into hospital computer systems to get you intel. When you hire a private investigator, you’re hiring a professional to gather facts and find information for you. Although they can’t obtain certain information (such as health records), they do have access to information that most civilians do not. Often private investigators are hired to perform surveillance or background checks or investigate cases such as adultery, child custody, missing persons, hidden assets, or debugging, and theft or other crimes.

Private investigators can be hired to interview people and provide that information to the client, perform photo or video surveillance, monitor activity at a location where you suspect criminal activities or questionable behavior, track a person’s movements, find missing people, do deep-dive background checks, and more. Private investigation can be helpful if you’re trying to get a court order but need evidence. Private investigators can also help find birth parents. Nationally, the average price range for private investigation is $70-$210 per hour.

What does a private investigator cost?

Private investigation isn’t just for blockbuster action movies. Hiring a private investigator can help in all kinds of situations ranging from finding a birth parent to improving personal security. Nationally, the average price range for private investigation is $70-$210, although pricing often hovers between $40 and $100 depending on the complexity of the services you need. Where you live in the country will affect your costs for private investigation; larger cities have higher business overhead and a higher cost of living, which in turn means higher service rates. The complexity of your case can also affect cost. A basic background check may have a flat rate, while hiring a private investigator to help with your child custody case may require more legwork and research, and therefore cost more. Some private investigators work on retainer. A retainer is essentially a nonrefundable deposit you pay to the professional — meaning you have retained their services — who then works against that amount. Here are some examples of average private investigation costs:

  • Hourly rate: $60-$70; costs can vary based on current fuel prices.
  • Flat rate: $100 for comprehensive background investigation services.
  • Retainer: $1,500 minimum retainer required by some pros before starting work.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
