Marcel was EXCELLENT! I had an unusual catering job, one he hadn't done before. He was terrific at following up with me, patient when I had to delay getting back to him, and took care to understand exactly what I needed. And then he carried it out to the letter, with perfect results. And he's super easy to work with. By sheer coincidence, one of my event attendees had used his catering services just a couple of months before, and also had only glowing reviews of his food and his service. If you have need for catering or chef services, you can't go wrong by hiring Marcel for the job. I can't wait to use him again!

Thanks Chef Boris and Carolina for a job well done. Not only do they prepare yummy food but their overall service is outstanding. Carolina's ideas on the planning of my parents' 50th wedding anniversary were of great help. The cake she made for the event was beautiful and delicious. I highly recommend Gourmet Catering for any event. Wonderful customer service!!! I will definitely hire them for future events,

I worked last weekend for the Tim McGraw tour and Madkins Catering catered breakfast, lunch and dinner for almost 400 crew and staff. My favorite was the lemon pepper fish and that there was plenty of food for thirds and fourths. The staff was very friendly and accommodating! They had quality food and outstanding customer service. Their business manager Marcus walked around and shook hands with everyone and asked each of us if we were satisfied.....very personable! I'd definitely recommend this company.

It was a pleasure to work with Chef Michael start to finish. He just catered a breakfast for 75 people this past weekend and went above and beyond by offering several delicious menu choices. His prices were fair and he was very professional & well prepared; basically supplying everything top to bottom (including disposable plates, cups, cutlery to full breakfast beverage service). He & his helper came 3 hours ahead to make sure everything was ready...& it was! Even without the rave reviews I received about his delicious food and fun personality, I would have and WILL use him again. I strongly urge others to do the same! Thank you Chef Michael!

Clubhouse Cuisine catered our wedding in West Hollywood in the Summer of 2015. The Executive Chef and Owner Faisal was amazing. He helped us plan the entire menu including appetizers, desserts, the wedding cake, and the full bar. Clubhouse Cuisine is an extremely professional company, yet laid back and fun. The owner personally took care of everything and made our day stress free and stayed for the entire event and clean up. The food was all amazing and all of our guests could not stop raving about it. I have referred many friends to Clubhouse Cuisine for their weddings and events and have used their services for a few dinner parties, barbecues and my baby shower.

Alexis was amazing form start to finish! I was giving a last minute birthday party for my husband and 4 other friends. I had a theme in mind and a budget to work with for about 20 people. Alexis came up with great suggestions for my theme and stayed right on budget. She delivered, prepared and set up everything for me and all with grace and charm. The food was way beyond the quality I expected. I clearly got more than I paid for too. I highly recommend her custom catering services and will definitely call on her again when the need arrises.

Segars culinary did a phenomenal job last night catering a very special dinner. Their attention to detail and ability to combine art and food in one amazing meal was second to none. They far exceeded our expectations and I would - and WILL - have them again to cook again soon. Without a question one of the best meals we have had in memory.

Tania and her catering were incredible! She exceeded my expectations. My guests are still commenting on how warm and professional Tania - and Jenny and Acacia (servers) - were during our party. And of course, my guests raved about the food, which was so delicious and beautifully prepared. I couldn't have been happier. I feel lucky that I found and chose Tania. I'm already excited to book her catering services again.

Here are some highlights that stuck out: gave advice about all kinds of things leading up to the big day- rehearsal dinner location, invitations, wedding games; really listened to what we like & tailored her suggestions accordingly; was patient with us when we were indecisive; gave us a lot of guidance during the rehearsal; stayed all the way through the end of the night and packed up our parents' cars. One of her major "deliverables" is an awesomely detailed schedule of events! This was a huge asset for us. She was also extremely attentive & helpful! She was direct but not bossy- exactly what we were hoping for. I would definitely recommend her to any brides who need some guidance!

It is really hard to leave a review for a person who has made a mark in my family's life. We asked for Greg's help in making my wife's birthday special by making us a delicious brunch and dinner. The first time I talked to Greg I felt a great connection between us. He shared with us his menu suggestions and his grocery pictures, it was just amazing. The day of my wife's bday he was on time with all his equipment and groceries to make us an amazing crab stuffed omelette with hollandaise

Having found La Panzano on Thumbtack, I was a little hesitant to hire since I had never worked with them before. Joseph was extremely accommodating and responsive. He provided a tasting and was able to work with our dietary restrictions. La Panzano catered our office Holiday Party and our 125 staff were all very happy. The food was great! The servers were very friendly and moved the line along quickly. I would highly recommend La Panzano as a caterer and looked forward to having another event soon in order to have some of their other food!

We have used Chef Mikey for both meal prep and catering. He is truly a gem. The meals he has prepped are flavorful, good variety and perfectly portioned. The last party Chef Mikey catered for us, he made jerk chicken wings that people couldn’t stop talking about. I’m craving them right now! I would highly recommend him for meal prep, private dinner parties or catering!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
