The kids at my daughter's 5th birthday party loved it. He brought little music shakers for all the kids so they felt like they were in a band. And great music to listen to as you're eating and hanging out with friends. Thanks Tucker

Summer is an amazing theory teacher in so many ways! She's incredibly professional, patient, intuitive, and understanding and has the ability to teach to your personal learning style. Loved every minute of working with her, and it's helped advance my own understanding of music, both with guitar and singing, in a way that has allowed me to make leaps and bounds in my own songwriting as well as learning other music styles. Hire her, right this very minute!

I have been a student of Kim's for the past 4 years. I have had and am still having a wonderful experience. She is a very skilled guitar player and instructor. Her teaching studio is a comfortable and private area, and in addition she has a recording studio separate from her regular teaching studio. The recording studio is where her students get to meet and team up with other musicians and learn the process of playing together and making recordings. This experience at playing as a group with a drummer and other musicians has been invaluable training. Especially if one wishes to go professional. Kim has an extremely sound knowledge of music theory and a way of teaching that varies depending on her students. I would highly recommend Kim as a teacher for all levels of musicians that need additional skill to add to their current knowledge.

Taylor created a very professional, radio ready song for me. He works extremely fast and knows how to construct modern music that sounds like he hired a full band. The mix was fantastic music and singer alike. I highly recommend Taylor for your project.

It was my 60th Birthday and I wanted to go all out. I found several bands here on Thumbtack but either they were going to do a "show" for way too much money, or their demos sounded like a garage band...even though the price was reasonable. I wanted jazz and I also had a long list of my "own" requests. I met with Dave to discuss my event and he was very professional. His price was very fair. He even took some lyrics I had written and wrote music to them which the band played live at my event. The band members were awesome right from the start arriving on time and setting up efficiently. They introduced themselves to me personally and we had great communication all evening. Frankly....they were GREAT FUN! They played everything from the Bossa Nova to Frank Sinatra to the Beatles...and I requested a lot of Country and they even did that! Talented and tight. I even sang and played with them and it really made things even more memorable. I would recommend Dave and his musicians without any hesitation. Don't look any further for your next live band....contact Dave Hill and you will be thrilled!

The John Brown Band played the Redondo Beach 4th of July Block Party and had the whole neighborhood rockin' out all night long. What a party!! After I heard them play, I knew I wanted to hire them for my wedding in San Diego on August 29. We had a great experience working with John and would recommend them in a heartbeat. The #1 comment from our wedding guests was how awesome the band was!! Upbeat song selection, dance-ability, and timing were perfect, even with no rehearsal on the Bridal Party Entrance!!! They even played a very special song (Harvest Moon) which I had totally forgotten to request - just perfect. And we got some GREAT pictures. :)

We had an acoustic guitarist from the band play our ceremony and an 8 piece band (the usual 6 plus 2 horns) play our wedding reception - the red letter players killed it! Malynda was very easy to work with and the band was extremely well priced compared to their competition. Everyone at the party still can't stop talking about the amazing band. Highly recommended!!

I have known Jennifer Deirmendjian for 12 years now and worked with her musically on solo projects off and on as well as performances in bands. She plays and writes violin beautifully. I have learned so much from her musicianship in rehearsals on a professional level more than anyone I have ever worked with. She is patient, kind and disciplined. I highly recommend her teaching experience as she has been my mentor and inspired me in so many ways!

Emma sang at my wedding. She's not only gorgeous, her voice is also fantastic and powerful. She sang a capella as well as with a band and both performances were awesome: tear provokers and dance instigators. I'd recommend her any day.

A bit about myself, before I delve into praise for Chloe Pourmorady; I am a jazz musician and co-frontwoman of the LA band The B's and The Honey. We perform an eclectic melange of French, German and American Jazz, Soul and Rock music with a variety of performers trained at the Berklee College of Music and Loyola Marymount University. I first met Chloe while we were both students of classical music at Loyola Marymount, and was immediately impressed by her intensity and the joy with which she approaches her relationship to music. Since graduating, I have invited Chloe to perform with The B's and The Honey, as well as collaborated with her on several original songs, performed with her own musical collective, Melanchloé. Chloe Pourmorady creates musical ideas like most people walk with one foot in front of the other. Her upbringing as a child of Persian refugees has undoubtedly influenced her musical language, though her passion for expanding and deepening that vocabulary extends from her youthful experiments with electropunk songwriting, to her rigorous study of classical violin, to her exploration of Eastern European and Romani Folk music. Both as a teacher and a performer, Chloe is constantly pushing herself to communicate musical ideas with artful intention, and this detication makes her an asset to whatever endeavor she to which she chooses to lend her talents.

Absoulute has played for California Yacht Club's biggest regatta party two years in a row, and both times, the crowd wouldn't let them stop. The band was perfectly tuned in to the vibe of the crowd and everyone was dancing. As the organizer, they could not have made my life any easier. They were all super to work with -- on time, professional, easy going, and eager to please.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

      • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
      • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
      • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.
