"My Experience working with Amanda on bettering and enhancing my path to vitality was absolutely incredible. She had amazing attention to detail and had me look into aspects of my life that I hadn’t considered to be something that would affect me. She is a brilliant coach and really motivated and inspired me. She helped me to see my best life and the possibilities and potential of myself. The steps and guidance she provided me with have given me tools that I can use throughout my daily life through it’s unpredictable and changing ways. I am always prepared to handle situations that I before would have stressed over or avoided due to anxiety. She also helped me with my gut health which was resulting in my skin having reactions that I just couldn’t get rid of. Everything she does is for you and she’s genuinely cares and wants to help you. Her coaching has changed my life and I highly recommend her. She is an absolute goddess and wonderful human being."

" I suffer from low back pain; muscle tightness, and stiffness throughout my whole body, with my hips legs and shoulders carrying the worst of it. With my profession a nurse, prior injuries, in addition to my hobbies/passion for snowboarding, hiking, biking and staying active, I believe I need to protect it from further wear and tear. After a painful experience with a prior masseuse, And realizing I'm was not truly feeling any progress/results, I decided to find a quality masseuse. I found Steve/Live Well on yelp and after reading great reviews, I decided to give him a try. There is a positive energy walking into his establishment, plus he gives you warm tea and a foot scrub before your massage. He asked about my medical history, hobbies, injuries, lifestyle and etc. His technique is nothing I've experienced before. While others dig into knots to try and release them, he identifies trigger points to help release knots and tension. Myofascial release, trigger points, are some of the common terms I hear. My last experience, the masseuse dug into a shoulder knot so deep my arm felt numb and I didn't like that. I have less pain, tightness, in my problem areas (shoulders, low back, and hips) after a massage. I usually go about every two weeks and I do 90 minutes because 60 minutes for my body just isn't enough. I have no complaints and have no doubts about the quality of his work, punctuality, and passion for what he does. "

"Lilah is a gem---an intuitive, loving, well trained, skilled and powerful healer. She has the gift of transformational touch. Lilah has been my massage therapist (and friend) for many years (I think 20). Her loving touch has helped my body heal from injuries and my spirit reconnect to its source. Lilah cares for the whole being. The beautuful environment she creates in her massage studio (clean, warm beautiful) and the safety she always holds in her heart make it easy to sink deeply into her relaxing and loving embrace. In the past year Lilah has been studying and practicing a form of massage called "Phenomenal Touch" from a master teacher. This is an extraordinary and transformative teaching which is a perfect match with Lilah's innate gift of touch and depth of presence. I highly recommend Lilah as a massage therapist. ❤️ Eric"

"George is by far one of the most professional massage therapists that I have had the pleasure in letting work on me. He was very kind, relaxed and intuitive when engaging my painfully notted back. I would consider him not only a great massage therapist but also a healer. After just one session of letting him work on my back I was able to rest easy and carry on with my day to day activities without being in anymore pain. Absolutley 5 Star rating for George Davidson! "

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a deep tissue full body massage?

A deep tissue full body massage is a form of healing bodywork. At your first massage, your massage therapist will do a brief intake. They will ask you questions about the type of pressure you’d like to receive during your deep tissue massage, any previous massage experience you’ve had, and any injuries or sensitivities you have. You can remain clothed, or the massage therapist will provide draping so that even if you’re not wearing clothes you are always fully covered. Deep tissue massage may be a good option for people with chronic pain or muscle tension. The systematic deep tissue strokes will work to break down any scar tissue or stiff tissues and create ease in your body again. Massage therapists use their hands, forearms, fists and knuckles to knead and stroke your muscles and loosen adhesions. Although deep tissue massage work is intense, it should not be painful, so communicate clearly with your massage therapist so they know if you’re having any discomfort. The national average cost of a deep tissue massage is between $70 and $90.

Do deep tissue massages work?

Deep tissue massage not only feels fabulous, it can provide results. The massage technique targets deeper layers of muscle and your connective tissue. For its ability to stimulate those deeper muscles, deep tissue massage is commonly used during recuperation from sports-related and other injuries, according to the Mayo Clinic. Deep tissue massage has been proved to reduce high blood pressure and a range of other ailments. Deep tissue and other types of massage are frequently used for relieving stress, managing pain, breaking down scar tissue, relieving muscle tension and improving health. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health cites the following as health conditions for which that deep tissue massage can provide relief:

  • Chronic low back pain, chronic neck pain, and osteoarthritis of the knee
  • Labor pains
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Fibromyalgia pain and fatigue
  • Headaches
  • HIV/AIDS

The proper deep tissue massage may also benefit preterm infant health. Cancer patients may experience reduced pain, increased relaxation, and improved mood.

What is the purpose of a deep tissue massage?

There are many reasons to get a deep tissue massage. A deep tissue massage can release adhesions — also known as knots — that are causing painful tension in your muscles. Deep tissue massage can promote healing and ease discomfort related to illnesses such as cancer, chronic headaches, osteoarthritis of the knee, chronic neck or back pain, depression, and more, according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. If you have an old sports injury such as shin splints, or a bad back from an old car accident, deep tissue massage can promote healing in your traumatized and scarred soft tissues and get you on the road to recovery. The strokes and techniques used in deep tissue massage work to lengthen soft tissue structures that have stiffened and hardened into knotty adhesions that allow minimal movement. Deep tissue massage can loosen these adhesions so that long-standing scar tissue releases and you can gain more mobility and more freedom from stiffness and pain. And it just feels good. The national average cost of a deep tissue massage is between $70 and $90.

What is the difference between a deep tissue massage and a Swedish massage?

Deep tissue massage and Swedish massage are both forms of therapeutic bodywork. In both modalities, a licensed massage therapist uses strokes administered with their hands or forearms to loosen and relax your muscles and other soft tissue. These releases can promote relaxation, pain relief and wellness.

Deep tissue massage may be an excellent therapeutic choice for people with chronic pain or severe tension in their muscles. The deep tissue massage technique moves below the top layer of muscle and soft tissue to release adhesions in your core muscles. In comparison, the strokes used in Swedish massage focus on loosening and relaxing the top layer of your soft tissues. Swedish massage produces relaxation and well-being, but if you have a long-term injury or back pain that won’t seem to go away, deep tissue massage may be a better option for you. The systematic deep tissue strokes will work to break down any scar tissue or stiff tissues and create ease in your body again.
