Amin was very professional and got the job done right. He was efficient and installed a very large flat screen over a large stacked stone fire place. It came out great and looks great. He was very courteous and cleaned everything up before he left. Jeff

Michael did an awesome job! He was prompt and went the extra mile to make my entire bathroom and shower tile sparkle. He was even able to make my pebble stone, shower floor shine. He also repaired some sections where the caulking had been poorly done by the original contractor at no additional cost. I will definitely use him for all of my future jobs.

I submitted my request and Shawn was able to come by and give me a quote and do the work the same day. No other contractors that I spoke to that day called back like they said they would but Shawn followed up and showed up ready to work. I've already received so many compliments on the work that he did finishing my Quartz Stone Accent Wall. Thanks Shawn! I would recommend him for sure for other work and to others

We hired George to completely landscape our front yard, back yard, including digging out all the grass flowers and weeds, landscaping the front yard into decomposite granite (DG) with stepping stones, replace the concrete driveway, and install concrete and pavers in the backyard. His and his crew worked diligently, and his price was competitive. Also, he built cement blocks and pavers for our new mailbox, and driveway solar lights for the front yard. Our driveway now looks really great and attract attention to passerby. Thank you George!

Excellent customer service & professional. Jordan & Tim are a great team, along with the rest of his crew. Jordan gave me an estimate on an RV slab that literally sits on the side of a cliff. He took his time to ensure it was done not only with safety in mind but went the extra mile to stamp, color & border the Slab. So it's not only functional for the RV (a 14k lbs 5th wheel) but it's also a nice area for entertaining when the rv is not parked there. Polite, professional, trustworthy. These guys did a great job. I'll definitely keep them in my contacts for future work on the property. The were also able to salvage some nice stone pieces I had on the previous slab that I'm able to use in the future. I bought a larger RV, so these guys came in and took all the measurements needed to accommodate the bigger rig.

Francisco and his team were fabulous! They spent two whole days pulling weeds, cleaning up the yard, pulling a bunch of plants I know longer liked, and then they landscaped my sloped hill, the total cost was $3000 but they worked their butts off and I love the end result!!! I liked them so much, I hired them as my full time gardener!!! The sloped hill was hard rocky soil with old ugly succulents, now it has a stone pathway, gorgeous blooming plants, I can't say enough about how happy I am!!!

We asked Form & Focus to design and re-landscape our front, side and back yards to give us a Southwest Zen feel. Their designer, Katie, worked closely with us to give us just what we wanted working within our budget. Her design included a Japanese style Zen garden (at our request) and new flagstone patio while using colorful stone to significantly reduce the area of our yard that needed watering. We did keep some areas of lawn, but used a new type of drought resistant grass called UC Verde buffalo grass (developed specifically for California by the University of California) that can be maintained at a meadow length, and which fits in perfectly with our natural Zen approach. The project took about 2 weeks to install and was carefully supervised by Jacob and Aaron on a daily basis. They worked with us to make adjustments to the various areas of the design as we moved along, so that everything was sized and shaped to our specs. Their people arrived promptly every day and worked through 100+ degree heat to keep us on schedule, cleaning up each night before they left. Here's what they did for us: demolition of existing landscape, installation of artificial turf, installation of flagstone/decomposed granite walkway/patio, installation of Zen garden including a 1,200 pound boulder, conversion to drip sprinkler system, installation of borders and decorative rock, installation of drought resistant grass and plants throughout. They were a pleasure to work with and I would not hesitate to use Form & Focus for future work.

It was a pleasure working with Brian. He is honest, professional and flexible. He removed my old cast mold fireplace/ mantel/ hearth. Then replaced it with slate tile hearth, stacked stone and wood mantel. It was exactly what I wanted.

I enjoyed working with Cabinet Master. I called and I was able to get an appointment right away. I was pleased to hear the different options I had with cabinets and stone. At the end I loved the results with my kitchen and I would recommend to work with them.

The folks at Navarro Stone did excellent work in all phases of the job. Every person I interacted with was professional and simply a joy to work with. The pricing was great and I am very very happy with the results. I had all the carpet and linoleum removed from the entire home and replaced with gorgeous porcelain tiles. In addition they replaced the cracked tiles in my countertop and everything just looks great! Thanks especially to Juan & Efren and the rest of the Navarro team. I would recommmed them to anyone seeking this type of work.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
