We worked with Shea on the day of our wedding and Shea was AMAZING! Not only she is highly skilled & experienced singer/musician, she was super nice & easy to work with as she was always responsive, willing to work with us to select our wedding songs etc. She was amazing at reading the atmosphere of the room during the wedding, too. We would highly recommend her for any events :)

Summer performed for a small group of us and we were all very impressed and very happy with how it all went. I had asked her to blend in some 90's bands into her repertoire (my wife's favorite music!) and the choices were fantastic. She arrived early, played far longer than we had originally allowed time for (which was great) and was a very pleasant and easy person to get along with and communicate with. I'd hire her again in a heart beat.

We hired Mr. Varnell for our wedding and could not have been happier with his performance! Not only a true musical talent, but an honest professional who can walk you through the "in's and out's" with ease on an already hectic day. I was so happy we did not hire a tacky DJ or the same old organ/piano player for our wedding...but instead brought the elegance and uniqueness of the saxophone. We received so many compliments from our guests. Would most definitely hire him again!

Wedding music was fantastic. Rob worked with us beforehand to chose the perfect songs for different parts of the ceremony. He was early and stayed until the last people left. Everyone commented on how beautiful the music was throughout. And he literally saved me by lending me his bowtie after my attempt to tie one failed. Highly recommend.

I recently had a back yard wedding in Carlsbad, Ca. Bill entertained my guests, by playing his guitar during the cocktail hour prior to my wedding ceremony. Last minute plans changed and I also needed him to play while I walked down the isle. He gladly obliged and stayed through out the ceremony. I didn't hear very much of what he was playing, as I was only present during the ceremony. According to my family and guests, his quality of work was excellent...thank you Bill!

Daniel played cello at our intimate home wedding along with another local musician. They exceeded our expectations, easily accommodating specific song requests for the ceremony then filling our reception with a lovely mix of traditional music that was lively and warm but not overpowering for our small space. Music was such an important part of our wedding and I'm so grateful Daniel was able to be there and add to atmosphere.

From the first time I talked to Neil Stipp I know he would be the perfect person to play at my wedding on November 22nd, 2014. Before my wedding happened, I had never even attended a wedding, so I wasnt sure what music to play or how anything really went in a wedding ceremony. The first time I talked to him he explained everything perfectly, and he hummed different songs so I had an Idea of the type of music he played and the songs he suggested.(since I had no clue about any of it! Haha) He always stayed in contact with me and made sure everything was going well. He came and set up a week early to figure out where he would be set up and did trials of different songs and them in different tunes. Then on the day of the wedding he played and all my guests loved him. We got married outdoors, and he brought his own keyboard and amp.. my guests said it set the perfect mood for a wedding when he was playing. I couldnt have asked for anybody better to play the music for my wedding. Thank you Neil!

PhatX (Brian Cochran) I find his work to be very professional, dependable and knowledgeable. I've used him several times before, one event on, May 06, 2013 for Bishop Rhone's Inaugural Banquet and wedding receptions. He has all the right equipment and stays updated on songs/artists. Love his work!!!

Jordo makes his own music which is amazing and also plays covers! I loved having him at my venue. He can perform any song you want. I have never heard anything quite like him! He uses his loop pedals to make one guitar sound like a huge band. I can liken him to is Ed Sheeran. He is reasonably priced but there is no way he will be be able to keep his prices so low for so long. He can perform for anything. Weddings, shows, parties, and just about anything. If you call him he would love to help you out!

Mischief made my event. We had a dance floor and the band kept it full all evening long. They had great groove, had varied song list. Marlena not only has great voice - truly star quality - but was amazingly varied in style for music she sang and she certainly kept the guys attention. If she wasn't so nice I would hate her :-) the lead guitar player clear knows his craft - his solos were crazy good and fantastic job singing. Harmony amount the members was impressive often in 4 parts! They showed up on time, were professional, interacted very well with my friends, and put on an amazing show in addition to the amazing sound. I would definitely hire them again!

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

        What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

        • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
        • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
        • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.
