I have had the pleasure and the honor to teach alongside Linda GILBREATH. She and I taught 6th grade LA/HSS at a large middle school in Merced, CA, a city in the Central Valley. I was most impressed with her ability to impart history and English/ language arts skills to her middle school students and to be so animated and excited about it that her students, in turn, would become such "sponges of learning" in the process! Our 6th grade collaboration was highly successful, largely due to her contributions. She always went above and beyond to teach 6th grade history/ social science: her world travels enabled her to teach ancient civilizations, especially Ancient Egypt. Please contact me if you should need additional information. --S. Stocking Merced, CA

I worked with Linda for many years as a LA/SS sixth grade teacher. As a colleague of Linda's, I can tell you she is an excellent English teacher!

I grew up next door to Linda Gilbreath and we went to high school together. She was smart, caring and an extremely nice young lady. I had lost track of her until recently. I am sure that she must have been a good teacher to be teaching so long and being asked back.....

I have had the pleasure of working with Linda Gilbreath as a colleague and also having her as my son's teacher. Linda is a caring teacher who made my son feel confident and proud of his work. As 6th grade teachers together we worked on curriculum. She has always been very creative and willing to share ideas. It is apparent she has children at heart and a talent for education.

Linda has excellent organizational skills. She is a keen observer of children, and is very cognizant of what is appropriate for them developmentally. I worked with Linda in a Sunday School context. Linda always wanted to provide the best experience possible for the students. She was always punctual and prepared for the myriad things that can come up in the education process. Linda loved helping children get a global view of things. She has taught in Tunisia and Cameroon, thus she brings a unique perspective as an instructor.

FAQs

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

I had always wanted to see Equatorial Africa and be a teacher there. While I made it to Tunisia, in North Africa, that was a long way from Equatorial Africa. In fact, it was Pre-Saharan Africa. I did, however, get to teach for two years while I was there. Later, an opportunity came up to teach in Cameroon so I took that assignment without a moment's hesitation. It was a dream come true; it was right on the Equator! As an added bonus, I would end up teaching Teachers of English as a Foreign Language and was able to travel all over Central Cameroon holding teaching workshops. While working, I got to see some of the most beautiful and breathtaking landscapes in the Cameroonian rain forest. After I came back home, I finished getting my teaching credential and have been teaching ever since.

  • Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

I have one middle school student who is receiving remedial instruction in math. He is in the 8th grade so he is getting ready to graduate to high school. Earlier he was in danger of not graduating because his G.P.A. was too low. His primary problem was that he was just not focusing and he didn't seem to care. I kept working with him and he slowly improved in his math skills. He then began to improve in his other subject areas. He is now going to graduate with his classmates. I believe that that initial change came from his realization that he was in danger of not graduating and that was enough to get him motivated. I had little to do with his epiphany, I was just there to see the transformation and it was my pleasure to be a part of it.
