Derek arrived on time and was polite and focused on the task. He diagnosed the loud rattle / vibration we have in an HVAC vent -- determined the heater is otherwise working fine -- but wasn't able to eliminate the noise. Our vent cover is atypical (will require brute force removal, followed by repair/painting.) He recommended we hire a "handyman" who will have the tools to reach far into the vent to solve the problem. We were not charged for Derek's visit.

Working with Shlomi to get the HVAC and the carpets cleaned at the office was a pleasure. He took the time to do a thorough inspection, explained what would be involved, and listened to our concerns about the process. The work he did was exceptional and we are happy with the results. I am happy to recommend ESI Repairs and Upgrades.

The service from Bajji at Smart HVAC was outstanding. He fit me in his schedule when I had an emergency -- a furnace that failed on one of the coldest days of the year. He fixed the furnace on the same day, a Friday, while other companies were not able to see me until the next week.

Kevin responded to my Thumbtack project via message and added that he was in the area on another job, offering to check my HVAC issues after his existing job if I was interested. I was open to the service call and requested a call in advance of the arrival, which Kevin accommodated without issue; answering some questions I had in advance via phone. I decided to continue with Kevin based on our conversation and I'm please that I did. Kevin was punctual and professional, knowledgeable and informative, friendly and customer service oriented, as well as very reasonable priced for services and parts my issue(s) required. Kevin exceeded my expectations. I would be happy to work with and hire Kevin again for repairs and/or maintenance when needed, and I would absolutely refer his services to anyone based on my experience today. Thank you, Kevin!

Max and Beto are both highly recommended to do all your plumbing and Hvac projects. They deserve a 10 star rating. I cannot thank them enough for all the work they did to install our tankless water heater. Not only are they very professional but did a clean job and very good price.

Joshua was amazing--and to be honest, and if I could give him 100 stars I honestly would. We originally hired Joshua to install a wall furnace, but he expertly helped point us towards a heat pump system which actually has both heat and AC within the same ballpark price. He's helped us navigate this entire process and we are now inspection ready. Very excited about our new HVAC system!! In addition, he was able to help us with our bathroom vent and stove exhaust vent at no additional cost. Highly recommend Joshua and Ohana Air --definitely the best contractors we'ved worked with thus far.

I came to Carlos with what seemed like a straightforward problem. He solved it in the end, and in the process uncovered all sorts of problems that my previous HVAC contractor had left behind. He came out within 24 hours of my initial request to investigate and do a free estimate, and came back to do all of the repairs and improvements today: closing off two ducts that were just blowing into our crawlspace (!), rerouting existing ducts to shorten the distance air has to travel to our bedroom, replacing bent ducts with proper elbows, fixing the cover to the furnace (small work, but nice to reduce a leak), and tuning the dampers to make sure we have airflow to our bedroom. From the beginning, Carlos worked hard to figure out what was really going on with our ducts, and I'm super happy with the results. I can't recommend him more.

Denny is a top-notch professional with extensive HVAC experience. When I spoke with a couple of other bidders, it wasn't even obvious that they understood what it might take and how to tackle the hard problems. Denny has worked on old houses with arcane electrical connections and decades-old risers to anticipate and address what might come up. He had a thorough approach to the project. He did everything I asked for and some more. I didn't have to remind him of the couple of small projects on the side of his main assignment after he agreed to do it. He left the place better than he found and did a beautiful job that can last for decades to come. I'd hire him again.

Unfortunately I was not able to proceed with my insulation project with B Green Service (my HOA did not approve the project). However, I was still very impressed during my time planning and working with Shlomi. He provided a reasonable quote to install blown-in cellulose insulation into my apartment ceiling, and was very professional and transparent with pricing during the process. He was knowledgeable and explained the various types of insulation, and gave a break down of completion timing. Additionally he was very responsive to my emails, texts, and phone calls, and provided all necessary info that I'd requested from him on time. Although I did not have a chance to hire him this time around, I would certainly work with him and his company in the future if given the chance.

Superb! After looking around and getting multiple estimates we finally found the perfect company for the job. Ricardo, the owner of Bayhill Heat and Air is a very honest guys, he runs a very professional and well rounded company. What he promised is what he delivered. He ensures the work is done to exceed the customer's expectations and especially his own (which is way beyond what I was expecting). The crew came, worked nonstop to deliver the system on time and everything looked unbelievably good. They didn't cut any corners to make it perfect. Thanks Ricardo (and team) , your company is the best HVAC company in town, hands down.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
