Working with Rand has been great! He really elevated the level of quality of our annual event video, from the video quality to the editing and final product. He was extremely easy and professional to work with in this whole process, which made my job easier particularly the day of the event. I would highly recommend Rand for your business video project.

Next year I will mark my 60th year in public television. 32 years of it were spent at KQED-SAN FRANCISCO, one of the flagship stations of the PTV system. There I started in the late 1950’s as a Stage Manager-Floor Director and eventually became a Production Assistant, Producer-Director, and finally Executive Producer of Local and National Production, as well as EP of all On-Air promotion and fund-raising.I've produced THE THREE TENORS. LES MISERABLES IN CONCERT, FRANK SINATRA-THE VOICE, and concerts by PERRY COMO (an Irish Christmas), HARRY BELAFONTE, and CAROL KING!! For the last 19 years as an Indy, I have co-produced and directed biographical performance Specials on THE MAMAS AND THE PAPAS, THE KINGSTON TRIO. and LIBERACE. One on the great Bandleader-composer GLENN MILLER is currently being developed. My task at hand last week was to produce/direct a 7-minute short documentary on my 91-year old sister Renee Cary, who passed away in July. So..the version had put together for me was used for a 10am run thru Friday morning. Luckily I received permission from the Coordinator of the Event the next day to send them a revised version to be downloaded later that day onto her laptop. So I googled SANTA BARBARA EDITORS and up came the word THUMBTACK. Those folks asked me the critical questions, whose answers would lead them to recommend someone who mainly could do the job THAT DAY Friday in order to download it that evening. AND that’s exactly what happened due to the EXTRAORDINARY skills and terrific personality of SHAUN KHAN of FD Productions!!!! When SHAUN CONTACTED me and I found out he was in LA, while I was in Santa Barbara — I thought “same old same old”. Well i couldn’t have been more wrong!!!! Shaun explained to me on the phone that we would do the edit session using SKYPE to link us together. So we did and I was able to see and hear on my IPAD EVERY edit that he did after we were able to discuss what it was to entail—down to the VERY IMPORTANT to me speed of the dissolves between the photos.

Commercial and Event Shoot - we hired Ron to do the event shoot for our new facility opening and do a few external images, he delivered 10 folds, he brought his drone and was able to fly it around our facility to capture stunning video and still images. We then hired Ron the second time around to take commercial photographs of our products and equipment and once again has delivered amazing results! I recommend Ron for any photography and videography needs!

I've had Howard transfer a bunch of VHS tapes to DVD for me, both while he was still in GA, and since his business moved to CA. His work is great, very professional, and great quality (considering the age of my tapes). Thanks Howard!

James in not only professional, but he will go the extra mile to make something spectacular. We have worked on two music videos together and even with a low budget, these videos came out better than I could have ever imagined. After filming a video in the forest area in Malibu, he was completely covered in dirt and sweat and eagerly said, "Okay, what's the next location?" A great attitude goes such a long way especially when working on content all day. James is incredibly talented in the work he does, but also has an incredible personality that is hard to come across in LA. James is purely in it for the passion and love of film. I can't wait to work on more videos together down the road.

I had Wolf edit material for me and I also paid for some training. He's a very good editor; fast and focused. As a teacher, he's great. I'm not very good at video but after having a few hours training with Wolf, via e-mail, phone and Skype, I can get the basics done, although I still send the important job to Wolf.

Collaborating with Brad on my music video has been an absolute honor and privilege! He brings such passion to his work, not to mention so many technical and artistic skills to the project (as filmmaker, writer, editor, educator, storyteller...) that it's no surprise as I view the video we've made together that I'm jumping for JOY -- now, and undoubtedly for a good long time to come!

Theresa Stroll filmed and edited my one woman show and she is absolutely terrific! Her work exceeded my expectations. She is a skilled editor and I will definitely be using her again! She works quickly and professionally. I contacted Theresa because I had an urgent deadline. I was submitting for a grant proposal and needed multiple videos edited, representing my work. Theresa came through and saved the day! Her turnaround time was ridiculously fast, and very reasonably priced. I've already asked Theresa to edit my sizzle reel, I know it's in great hands!

He's great at giving options and brings new life to video, which is what I always look for in an editor. Aaron is also very flexible and a pleasure to work with.

As a media professional firm, Ascend Media Productions highly recommends Since 1987 Films for wedding videography. Andrew and Anthony have top-notch skills as camera operators and video editors, but it's their passion and commitment to excellence that sets their work apart from the rest. A quick read of their reviews tells that story, and it's plain to see why so many brides and grooms consider this team to be a part of their family. Ascend Media Productions is proud to partner with Since 1987 Films for their drone imagery needs.

    About

My editing work has three credentials that make it superior to what others do. 1. When given a brief from a client, I will spend time planning and adding my own touches that the client can choose to use or discard. 2. I can work at any pace, allowing for any project to be completed on time. 3. I can pick up any style of editing, allowing me to edit to the purpose that the client intended.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

How much is videography for a wedding?

Wedding videography is one thing many couples regret not paying for. It may seem like just another expense during wedding planning, but it’s really special to have a moving memory of your big day. The national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. Pricing can vary depending on wedding length, special film features, the amount of editing required, and how many videographers are needed to cover the event. Many videographers offer packages that provide different levels of service. A very simple wedding documentary could be $600 or more, while a full-scale cinematic experience involving multiple videographers could be $2,500 or more. Here’s an example of average package pricing:

    • Package 1: $1,400
      • Footage during and after the ceremony, including highlights requested by the couple.
      • Two cameras with audio equipment.
      • DVD including a 3- or 4-minute edit to a song of the couple’s choice and a 45- to 50-minute raw edit covering the entire event.
      • Recordings of guests’ good wishes to the couple.
    • Package 2: $1,800
      • Includes everything from Package 1, plus an additional videographer (2 total) and aerial videography.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
