Carl is an absolute blessing! He is tutoring and helping my son prepare for his SATs. He is knowledgeable in all subjects and makes learning fun and easy to understand. My son is always looking forward to meeting with him because he feels he learns and gains so much information in just their hour and half session. My son actually told me that he wishes He met Carl during his primary years because he teaches him so much foundational information that he feels he should have received from his previous teachers. With the teachings he receives from Carl, my son feels confident that he will excel in his SATs and in school. I highly recommend Carl for any tutoring needs. He is professional, easy to reach and most importantly an OUTSTANDING teacher .

Daniel tutored me for about 8 weeks, 2-3 times a week for the GRE. He was friendly, knew his stuff, and definitely helped me to remember my high school math from over 5 years ago. Great tutoring experience!

Daniel was very professional and went above and beyond to give the tutoring help I needed in a somewhat obscure math topic, which included him spending time researching and working through the problems before the tutoring session to ensure that he could answer all of my questions. I would recommend Daniel to anyone looking for a quality math tutor who invests himself in your success. Thanks again for all the help Daniel!!

We highly recommend Lois For tutoring. She is well known in Honolulu and has years of experience. She tutored our granddaughter when she needed to take the entrance exams into private schools. Lois has great knowledge of children and skill in getting them to do their work. Her lessons were challenging and fun. Our grandaughter could hardly wait to return to her next session. We wish Lois was here to tutor our grandaughter in her college SATS. Carol Lehman

You won't find a more personal learning experience in any other tutoring companies as far as I'm concerned. I've tried others and nobody else has delivered the sort of personalized system of learning that I've found here. I've recently had the pleasure of studying with Lawrence Chang, and have greatly improved my outlook for the ACT test, daunting as it may seem. He has provided me with an important skill set and has refined my test taking skills through the route that best suits my learning capabilities. It is a very comfortable program, and I feel very confident in my growing test taking tactics; I can attack this thing diligently and under no duress. I do believe this company is incredibly successful in preparing those whose minds work in unique ways and anyone willing. Please consider checking these guys out, I promise you won't be disappointed.

I found Reza through L.A. Valley College's math department, as he is on their approved tutor list. Reza is an excellent tutor and has brought my son's grade in Algebra 2 up from a D to an A. He knows how to teach and gives my son the extra help on present and future problems that he does not get in school. His help has been invaluable to us and I will continue to use his tutoring services throughout my son's academic years.

Rachel helped fine tune my mathematic skills. She was patient and went on my pace while working with me. Her challenges were within my zone of proximal development. Each lesson, I acquired a valuable skill. I was able to place into Statistics with her help and I highly recommend her to students who want math tutoring. Her rates are fair and she makes tutoring personal for her student to achieve his goal.

Jenny is tutoring my son in math and biology. My son attends a college prep high school. She has been very flexible with the schedule and really wants him to "understand" the material. Although it has only been two sessions thus far my child is excited to learn and he understands the material. She arrives on time , confirms the day of and is very professional. So far we are happy with her service.

I first started tutoring with Yehia because I was failing calculus. Unfortunately it was too late to save my grade. But still, my average test score went up by over 20% after starting sessions with him. It’s my second time taking calculus but now I started tutoring with Yehia from the beginning and I’m extremely thankful and happy with my grade! My first ever calc test score was a 52%, my second ‘first’ test score this new semester was an 87% - that is after working with Yehia. I actually enjoy learning calculus now and even my professor congratulated me on my grades & success in the class! Highly recommend him if you are struggling in math. He is very invested in your journey and it feels great to have such a great tutor & support.

Amy has been tutoring my 10th grade son in Geometry for a year. Amy is not only a lovely person, but is a fantastic teacher and tutor. She goes above and beyond in her commitment to her students, putting so much time and care into her weekly lessons. Her talent for teaching was apparent from the first session and her ease with teenagers is absolutely amazing. She is a no-nonsense tutor and can get my distracted son straight to work, but she also has a great sense of humor which makes the time more relaxed and enjoyable for him. When I hear them laughing during the sessions, it warms my heart. My son told me that Amy explains the problems better than his teacher and he actually understands the material when she goes over it with him. He is enrolled in Algebra 2 in the Fall and I am definitely hiring Amy for the summer to get a head-start on the school year!!

I had a tutoring session in Algebra with Christine today, she was very patient with me. I have a hard time with Algebra, and she understood that and didn't get annoyed at having to repeat formulas to me:) Honestly I wish I would've met her at the beginning of my Elem. Algebra class. She shows you different ways of doing the problem, giving you an example of her own to make sure you've fully grasped the material. I highly recommend her, and will definitely be tutoring with her again. Thanks Christine!!

After a couple less-than-stellar tutoring experiences via Thumbtack, I feel incredibly fortunate to have found Sol. My tutoring needs were somewhat unusual: after a 10-year hiatus, I needed to reacquaint myself with high school math in order to pass a placement test into a college-level calculus I course. Far easier said than done. Sol was up for the challenge, and knew just how to tackle it. After I had diligently dug out of my old textbooks from my parents' garage, Sol offered an anecdote about his dear friend and and former Cal-Tech college roommate when he was confronted with modern-day high school math. (Sol, you see, is not only an incredibly savvy tutoring professional, but also a retired JPL scientist--and a thoroughly interesting, thoughtful and personable man to boot.) As Sol's anecdote helped to illustrate, the scope of high school math has evolved in recent years, in ways even the former president of Hughes Aerospace, in a moment of complacency, would fail to appreciate. Pre-Calculus theses days focuses much more on the interpretation of graphs, and introduces concepts such as solving and plotting the inverse of linear and fractional equations, which wasn't even taught when I took the course circa 2000. At Sol's request, we set aside my old textbooks in favor of modern coursework that he provided. It was a few months later, at our last lesson, that I was able to truly appreciate how much Sol cares about his students. In his office, I happened to glance at a computer window where Sol had a folder with my name and files charting 'Goals', 'Progress' and 'Notes'. Sol's hard work and investment in my success paid off: on my placement test I scored a 98%--surpassing the score I had needed for calculus I and placing me into calculus II! As Sol predicted, the test had focused quite extensively on those more modern facets of pre-calculus that he had taught me. Now in calculus II, I feel utterly prepared, and only have Sol to thank. *Highly* recommended.

Alfredo’s patience paired with his love of all things math made him the perfect tutor for my daughter in her upper level calculus courses. Words cannot express what a great teacher he is and the lengths he will go to ensure understanding. Highest recommendation possible for Alfredo’s math tutoring skills.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

What is ACT test prep?

The ACT is a college entrance exam taken by students (typically in their junior year of high school) to determine admission eligibility and merit-based scholarship eligibility. The test may be taken as many times as desired and is not limited to high school juniors. Originally the acronym stood for American College Testing, but now ACT is the stand-alone name. ACT prep is a way for students to strategically prepare for test-taking. ACT prep helps students improve scores, practice taking the test, learn test-taking strategies, and improve material comprehension. Students can get help with ACT prep tutors in one-on-one sessions, via group tutoring lessons, in online self-study programs, or online with a tutor in video calls. The ACT test covers:

  • English
  • Science understanding and reasoning
  • Math
  • Reading
  • Writing essay (optional)

How do you prepare for the ACT?

The ACT is a universally accepted college readiness exam. There are multiple ways to prepare for the exam. One-on-one ACT prep tutoring is one of the most effective ways for students to ready themselves for the test. A tutor who specializes in ACT prep will coach the student on the type of material they can expect while also working specifically with topics that are more challenging for that particular student. Group tutoring sessions are a more cost-effective way to reap the benefits of an ACT prep instructor; a suggestion is to gather a group of four friends or classmates to share the cost. Professional tutors often recommend that test prep begin approximately three months prior to the exam. Cramming — unfortunately — doesn’t provide the same score results as consistent study, test-related homework, and practice exams do. Weekly two-hour learning sessions are what many pro tutors suggest for their college exam prep students. For top test-taking performance, tutors usually provide work throughout the week and the weekly session is used to cement knowledge and address weak areas. Math is a hard topic for most students, so plan accordingly.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.
