We asked for help uncrating and moving a 300+ lb marble-top table to our upstairs dining area. Scott and 1 crew member handled it quickly and efficiently after coming out to estimate the work required, which helped us feel comfortable with the job. Everything is in the right place with no damage! They were extra helpful with a bizarre shipping crate and difficult stairs, and gave us great advice if we need to move it again in the future.

There is pretty much no way around it: moving in San Francisco is an awful experience. The guys at Southwest Moving make it about as bearable as possible. In the days before my scheduled move, Joe was consistently responsive to any questions I had or updates to my moving inventory, and always prompt with sending an updated quote. I was moving from one bedroom in Downtown. The team of guys I had on moving day was Joe, James, and Jonathan. All three were remarkably efficient, careful, and hardworking. They got all of my boxes and furniture wrapped up and loaded quickly and were just as diligent with unloading at my new apartment. Southwest Moving offers a class service and I am very happy about having chose them to do my recent move.

John, Ulisses and Leo made our move from the Bay Area so stress free. They were polite and courteous, arrived on time and took great care wrapping our furniture for the move. We had zero damage and they were so helpful in setting up the furniture. exactly as we wanted it. I would highly recommend MrJ for all your moving needs. We found them an honest company that will do an in home estimate and follow through every step of the way.

Wood Frog Transport did a good job in moving a lift chair from my house to a residential care facility for my husband. Punctual and efficient at a fair price.

We've always moved on our own. This time my back was acting up so I called and got some moving quotes. Fairprice seemed like the best option between their reviews, pricing and terms. The day of the move they were right on time and calling when they were approaching. The guys worked hard! We had some trouble moving our refrigerator and the guys were really creative and figured it out without damaging the floors. Love these guys!

My son and I used Mod Movers to pack, load and move us to Sacramento. I was so impressed with the professional service the men provided. The price for the complete move was far less than other moving companies offered me, and it's a flat rate, no matter how many hours it takes. That's what first sold me, even before I knew how professional and skilled my moving team was. I move a lot, and I've always been quoted for a few hours, but it'll take much more than they say it will and I end up paying much more than I thought I would. After they moved me Mod Cleaners came in to deep clean my home in Carmel, wash the windows and shampooed my carpets. When I got back to turn in the keys to the landloard, I received my deposit back in full because the house was so clean and completely ready to be rented. I'm very happy with their service and will use them for all future moves in California.

A+ service from the crew at Indie Movers. I had used them for a previous move in the South Bay and decided to call them up to get a quote to do a job down in Alameda County; turns out they are expanding and just opened a new base in Pleasenton! My grandmother lives out in Dublin and had a medical emergency which required that she move to a downstairs unit. The guys at Indie Movers were able to take care of everything and set up her apartment the exact same way, carefully taking apart all of her antique furniture and assembling it just as it was. The two gentlemen that they sent, Will and Oren, were professional, respectful, courteous, and most importantly- on time and worked fast!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
